Among the works of the committee was to formulate new concepts on nursing professional roles. This included determining the expected future nursing roles in the workforce as well as issues such as nursing shortages, use of technology and societal issues among others. Also, the committee had to come up with recommendations on how to increase the nursing capacity through training and educating competent nurses. The capacity of nurses is required to meet the health demands of the population hence the need to redesign the education system to produce more nurses who are competent (Young et al., 2015).

The committee was also to influence the training of nurses such that they are in a position to work in multiple care settings and provide an increased range of services. Through this, the nursing profession will have advanced, unlike the past where nurses did not deliver services across all settings. Lastly, the committee was also entrusted with the duty of coming up with innovative solutions that would improve nursing practice and healthcare delivery. Hence, it was required to formulate possible innovative solutions in healthcare.

Importance of the IOM Future of Nursing Report

The IOM future of nursing report has a huge impact on the nursing profession. It is beneficial to the major components of nursing such as nursing practice, education and workforce. In regards to nursing practice, the report calls for the involvement of nurses in delivery quality, effective and safe care (Beauvais & Kazer, 2017). With the increasing healthcare demand, the report calls for the increase in the nursing scope of practice as well as the involvement of nurses across all care settings. Through this, nursing practice is set to advance. Also, it calls for nurses to practice to the full extent of their training which benefits them as thy will be in a position to take up more advanced roles in care delivery. This includes going into independent practice in states that do not have restrictive laws. Also, the report will advantage nurse practitioners as it calls for nurse residency programs and also increases in practice opportunities for nursing (Young et al., 2015).

The IOM report is important to nursing education as it seeks to further the education and training of nurses. It recommends that nurses be trained extensively to meet the required standards of practice. The education system is also required to meet standards of training to ensure nurses gain the required competencies to practice (Beauvais & Kazer, 2017). To help nurses get the required training, some education programs will be funded by federal governments. Also, nurses are required to engage in lifelong learning to increase their competencies as well as keep up with the changing trends in care delivery. Also, it recommends the increase in numbers of nurses with advanced training.

In workforce development, the report calls for the involvement of nurses in making decisions on issues that affect them. This is through proper planning and policy making procedures. Nurses are to be involved in policy making as well as advocacy just like other care professionals. They are to work collaboratively in redesigning and advancing healthcare delivery. Hence, nurses are required to take up leadership positions and be influential in advocacy, policy and decision making (Young et al., 2015)

Role of State-Based Action Coalitions and How Do They Advance Goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action

State-based coalitions take part in advancing the future of nursing through the campaigns for action. The coalitions carry out campaigns that help advance the future of nursing in various ways. For example, they campaign for increased scope of practice for nurses as well as laws to allow nurses to practice to the full extent of their education and training among others. Also, they advocate for the best interests of nurses and take part in ensuring safe and quality healthcare through nursing (Winkler, 2016).

Initiatives Spearheaded by the North Carolina Action Coalition and How They Advance the Nursing Profession

Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) is an initiative that aims to improve the health of North Carolinians by producing registered nurses who are better prepared to meet the healthcare needs of North Carolina (Winkler, 2016). The initiative was created to address the issue of nursing shortage which consequently affects care delivery. Hence, there was a need to train more competent nurses and increasing access to nursing education. To achieve this, strategies were formulated to increase the number of ADN graduates who complete baccalaureate education and consequently increasing the percentage of BSN-prepared nurses (Hall, Causey, & Hayes, 2012). The initiative planned to achieve this through partnerships with community colleges and universities.

Barriers to Advancement in North Carolina and How to Overcome Them

Just like other states, the major barrier to advancing the nursing career is the restrictive state laws. Different state has different laws that regulate the practice of nursing. In North Carolina, the state laws restrict the extent of practice by nurses. Hence, advanced practice nurses cannot practice independently or to the full extent of their training. Rather, they practice under the supervision of physicians. This is among the various barriers to advancement faced by nurses.

To address this barrier, the state laws have to be amended. The correct procedures for amending laws should be followed, which requires a lot of time and advocacy. Adequately trained nurses can provide primary care services independently. Advocating and campaigning for their right to practice according to their scope of training to benefit the population is the possible way of addressing the barrier.
