The artifact is part of my previous coursework, and it is coursework I did in fall 2016. I did choose this artifact because it is rich in information about the past and current challenges that the US society faces, especially with regards to racism. The prevalence of racial prejudice against the African-Americans is effectively covered in this artifact, offering a detailed picture of how the white police officers have been killing and blaming the blacks for crimes they did not commit. This artifact is valuable to my life because it has significantly contributed to enlightening me about the complexity of racism and its effects on the contemporary society. I am now more sensitive about racism than before, having learned more about how the security agencies are affected by racism in how they operate. I am more informed about how the African-Americans are profiled as potential criminals and the effects of this kind of structured discrimination. Consequently, I purpose not to condone any form of racism, for I know the adverse effects of tolerating racism in the society. The artifact has a profound impact on how I view the racial frictions in the modern day world; I no longer see it as a problem of the ordinary people but also the government system. From the content of the artifact, I am also made aware that when diversity is not well managed, it can create endemic challenges that include murder, subjugation of minority groups, and tensions between groups involved.
HIS 162 US History 2 Project
The artifact ‘HIS 162 US History 2 Project’ is about whether the United States of America was justified to use the atomic bombs on Japan during the Second World War. I chose this artifact because it offers insights into the views that supported the use of atomic bombs during the World War II, bearing in mind that the effects of this action were devastating and continued to be witnessed in the current society. I also chose this artifact because it is historic and reminds me of the last major world war that was fought, illuminating the course it took in its last stages.
I find this artifact valuable in my life because it contributes to my knowledge about the past invents and how they are connected to the modern society. The reasons as to why the Americans were justified to use atomic bombs on Japan gives me the insights on how differences between nations and various groups can be catastrophic, leading to horrible suffering. I have learned, at a personal level, to be a peace ambassador. This is regardless of the diversity of people I interact with, I see human life as sacrosanct, and it should be subjected to weapons of mass destruction as was the case of dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In essence, I see this artifact as important in helping me understand one of the most controversial issues in the world history, nuclear weapons, and the underlying challenges that precipitate warfare. I now have a clear view of what weapons of mass destruction can do to humanity, justifications notwithstanding.
IE323 Project Report
The artifact is our past groups work, which we did on the issue of parking in the United States, using Walden Galleria Mall as a case study. I chose this artifact because it deals with current challenges that have been brought about by rapid development in the society. The issue of parking in malls is a problem for the urbanized population, which need redress, hence the importance of this artifact in trying to understand the whole issue and how it can be fixed. The artifact is more valuable to me because it gives me a clear picture of how parking in malls, although not thought of before as such a big challenge, it is a problem that needs to be addressed. I established that parking at shopping malls comes with risk and challenges that arise from how the parking lots are constructed. The artifact has helped me to realize and appreciate the need to observe all the requirements for standardized parking. The light and sound intensity should be within what is acceptable to enable the parking users to enjoy the services. The artifact has also helped to add to my knowledge of the functioning of the parking lots and how the use of improvised technology can improve it. Therefore, to me, this artifact means an eye opener on the modern day challenges; in this case, parking in shopping malls and how it can be solved to better the client’s experience.
