Is it right for nurses to endorse health reform legislation even if the legislation is not perfect? Does this apply to the recently failed American Health Care Act?

It is irrefutable that nurses play an incredibly relevant role in informing members of the community concerning the benefits of any proposed health legislation (Mason, 2015). Therefore, it would not add up for nurses to inform the masses of the benefits of proposed health legislation which they do not support.

Nurses act as the patients advocate and therefore have a right to support health legislation that benefits their clients and oppose those that do not (Milstead & Short, 2018). For instance, nurses have demonstrated their support of the Affordable Care Act since it increases access to care for many even though it may have some challenges. Individual nurses and nursing organizations, however, opposed the American Health Care Act since it threatened to remove the benefits of the ACA to the people. The nurses were right to oppose this bill since it proposed to increase premiums for the elderly and replace ACA subsidies with tax credits (Koepke, 2017), which would have made health care unaffordable for elderly patients from poor minority backgrounds. The nurses were driven by their professional mandate to protect the interests of the patients rather than by political party loyalties.
