1 Barriers of Our Borders ABSTRACT The immigration question is arguably one of the most crucial questions of the current time. In the USA, there has been a notable movement towards putting in place strict measures to regulate who gains entrance into the country. This anti-immigrant rhetoric has been manifested in the administration’s plans to build a physical barrier – in the form of a wall – between the border of Mexico and the USA. This research study considers the extent to which the erection of such a barrier is likely to jeopardize the American economy by limiting the number of agricultural workers who can enter the country’s borders. In doing so, it demonstrates the ways in which the economies of the two countries are inextricably linked to each other. It also conducts an evaluation of the figure of the migrant worker amidst changing immigration policies, rising nationalist rhetoric, and the global movements of capital and labour. Key words: Immigration, Migrant Workers, Nationalism, Global Capital, Labour, Agricultural Workers
