KEEP THE MERCENARIES EMPLOYED

by Price Johnson In Mercenaries Wanted CPH3001, players won’t play adventurous Mercenaries this time around. No. Instead, you get to step into the shoes of an adventurous Mercenary HR Manager. That’s right! Because what is running a company of freelance mercenaries OTHER than one giant human resources puzzle? WHAT IT’S ABOUT There are a series of high-profile tournaments happening in the city of Gloomhaven in the coming week, and your Mercenary Company (one of six in-world groups, such as in the Jaws of the Lion CPH0501) needs to hire a batch of fresh new recruits to train, equip, and enter into those tournaments after 3 rounds of drafting and menial work around town. Each round, players will pass around decks of Mercenaries, drafting one at a time until they have a fully drafted team, cutting one unlucky Merc at the end of drafting. You’ll then cross check your training team’s abilities with the jobs posted that round on the town’s job board. Each company will then select one job to perform to earn themselves the most coin possible. Your team will return to HQ, bring back some loot, and then you’ll have to determine which of your Mercs to officially “hire” and send off to get ready for the tournaments. You won’t be able to use them in future rounds to earn coins, they’re busy focusing on the end-game. You’ll also have to pick one Merc to send off to their hard earned “retirement,” making them leave your party permanently. You’ll draft Mercs, complete jobs, and earn loot for 2 more rounds, slowly growing the size of your team of trainees, gaining coins, equipment, and building that end-game tournament team. There’s a balancing act between determining what characters to hold onto for the next round of jobs versus tucking them away for the end game tournament. Someone that worked really well in Round 1 just might not cut it for your plans in Round 2 - but maybe you should hold onto them 8

through the round anyway so you can save them for the tournament? It’s a tough decision, even if you don’t have the same emotional attachment to the mercenaries you get in a full-fledged Gloomhaven CPH2001 campaign. That final round of play is when everyone gets to bring their ultimate team to compete against the other players’ Mercenary Companies. All players will prepare and present their tournament teams, showing off the combos they’ve prepared all game in all three head-to-head endgame tournaments. At the end of the game - the Mercenary Company with the most coin wins, and more importantly, bragging rights for being the most premier Mercenary Company in Gloomhaven. WHY I LOVE IT First, it was really exciting when developer Dennis Vögele approached Isaac and I a couple of years back with a game he’d been working on in his free time. Dennis has worked, intimately, on so many of our tentpole games such as Jaws of the Lion, Frosthaven CPH0601, and Gloomhaven (2025). He clearly had thought a lot about what other genres of games could fit into the Gloomhaven catalogue while still feeling heavily inspired by our dungeon crawling themes. At the same time, everything about the game is designed to be welcoming to those unfamiliar with Gloomhaven or dungeon crawlers and who just want to play a strategic drafting game full of cool and unique characters. Secondly, it just fits our world SO well! One of the biggest things that excited me about the original Gloomhaven was the concept that your group wasn’t necessarily a group of best friends here to see an entire adventure through. No. In Gloomhaven you are a group of, rather selfish at times, freelance agents here to do a job, get paid, and eventually get out of the game entirely. And MAN, does Mercenaries Wanted capture that core thematic element. Every round you are forced to make difficult decisions about who to cut from your team, who to well-wish into retirement, who gets to borrow what gear, all while constantly keeping an eye on your ever shifting team dynamics and goals. With 61 unique Mercenaries there are so many different ways to “build your machine”, creating and finding synergies you haven’t deployed before. Every game I’ve played has felt like a fresh puzzle to be solved. You'll have mercenaries that you drafted in Round 1 because they were great in day-to-day jobs, but then you'll have to say goodbye to them before the final tournament because they just aren't bringing anything to the end-game table...it's a fun, bittersweet feeling. Finally, the gameplay is tight and consistently plays at 45 minutes, despite group size, as the majority of gameplay happens simultaneously across all players. This means that Mercenaries Wanted is not just a great option for fans of traditional hobby card-games, but especially great for Gloomhaven players who can’t fit another whole scenario into game night, but still want to scratch a familiar Gloomhaven itch in a fraction of the time. We’ve heard lots of requests over the last few years for smaller pieces of Gloomhaven content, as well as new ways to explore the lore, world, and characters of Gloomhaven, and I feel that Mercenaries Wanted fits the bill to a tee.

The Kerberos BuCUE Hound is a modification of ZAFT’s Mass Production TMF/A-802 Mobile BuCUE. The Kerberos BuCUE Hound improves the quadrupedal beast’s combat performance, particularly close-quarters combat. ZAFT equipped the Kerberos BuCUE Hound with new turret parts to equip the Zaku Warrior’s interchangeable Wizard Packs, reducing production costs and making the BuCUE a more versatile platform. The BuCUE did not perform well with most Wizard Packs, as their designers only developed the Wizard System for use with traditional bipedal Mobile Suits. ZAFT would solve this issue by creating a new Wizard Pack specifically for the BuCUE, the Kerberos Wizard. The Kerberos BuCUE Hound would receive a handful of modifications to the Mobile Suit to increase the functionality with its new equipment.

The main machine of the MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED C.E.73 STARGAZER-Strike Noir GUNDAM is in the lineup of the MG series. The wing base of the Noir Striker incorporates a shape that takes into account the strength structure, and a new interlocking gimmick is added. The newly established wrist return joint allows you to decide sharper poses than ever before with the return of the wrist. Includes various weapons equipped in the movie, as well as various wrist parts to equip them.

The Hail Buster Gundam, one of the new machines developed by Librarian Works in “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed vs. Astray,” is an upgraded version of the Buster Gundam with additional firepower that sports a different color scheme. The Mobile Suit piloted by Finis Socius is now offered as this sharply detailed snap-fit plastic kit that will be fully articulated with polycapped joints upon completion. Its weapon loadout consists of a 350mm gun-launcher, a 94mm highenergy beam rifle, and two shoulder-mounted 120mm anti-vessel multi-barrel guns. To coincide with the 10th anniversary of Gundam Seed Bandai has re-released this hugely popular HG kit of the Mobile Ginn in a “remastered” colour reflecting those seen on the Blu-ray release. A stand attachment and marking stickers are also included in this special release.

From the popular series Gundam Seed, Mobile Cgue has been released in HG scale. Mobile Cgue is produced after Mobile Ginn but has many unique flares of its own. This intimidating kit is made even more so by the weapons included, like its unique sword and shield with attached Gatling gun, reminiscent of the Gouf Custom.

Here’s the first release of Nebula Blitz Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed vs. Astray! The weapons loaded on this weirdo includes the following: the Maganoikutachi, Lancer-Dart, Beam Saber, Tsumuhanotachi, Gleipnir, and Maganoshirahoko. Additionally, its backpack can be attached to the back of Vent Saviour Gundam, and the backpacks from Nix Providence Gundam and Regen Duel Gundam can be attached to the back of Nebula Blitz Gundam. The model features crisp details, snap-fit assembly, and full articulation via polycapped joints. Finally, foil stickers and Tetron stickers are included to add some final details to the kit. Molded in color, Sinanju will be fully poseable upon completion, right down to its individually articulated fingers. Other features include an openable cockpit hatch and thrusters on its backpack that can slide open. Its array of weapons includes a Beam Rifle with grenade launcher attachment, a pair of Beam Axes and Beam Sabers and a shield. Both a sheet of waterslide decals and foil stickers are provided so you can choose which one you prefer for the model. A sheet of marking decals is also included to add further detail to this sharp-looking mech. Using the new Polystyrene frame, it is more resistant to chemical damage from lacquer paint. The bazooka used in episode 6 is also included and can combine with the rifle for a menacing weapon.

The iconic bat wings of the Endless Waltz version of Deathscythe Hell bring nostalgia to many a Gundam Fan in the U.S. Now available as a Master Grade, this version of Death scythe Hell contains the latest MG technology offering superior plastic engineering, accuracy, and possibility. New wing gimmick allows for various extreme poses and contains various warning signs and marking’s. Its extending arm gimmick is made possible through the use of replacement parts and can extend 2 arms or 1 very long arm. Storm Fausts can be mounted on the backpack and heat saber comes in clear and solid variants. Closed and weapon holding fists for both arms are included. Its iconic monoeye can be rotated via a ball joint mechanism that can be articulated when the front clear window visor is removed.

with the fastest familiars and progressing to the slowest. This creates a constant tension between taking more and acting sooner. A player may position a slow familiar to collect a large haul, only for another player to use a faster one to steal some of those resources before they can be collected.

The story of Drops of Evil HG194 began almost ten years ago, during a lunch break at Spielwarenmesse in Nuremberg in 2017. Like many game ideas, it started with a single mechanical concept: a variation on worker placement where different types of workers could collect different amounts of resources, but those collecting more would also be slower. Faster workers would collect less, but act first—and potentially take resources away from workers already placed.

The result is an unusually interactive resource-gathering phase. You are not simply deciding what you want to collect; you are trying to predict what will still be there when your familiar gets its turn. Every placement is both an opportunity and a risk, because your opponents are simultaneously making plans that can interfere with yours.

That simple idea survived a remarkably long development process. Almost everything around it evolved, but the tension between speed and quantity remained at the heart of the game. Eventually, it became one of the two complementary “souls” of Drops of Evil: a highly interactive resource-gathering game and a spatial puzzle in which every resource collected has to find its place.

Then the game changes character completely.

Players take on the role of competing witches, sending their familiars (crow, cat, toad, and snake) into the Forest to gather eerie ingredients such as bat wings, salamander eyes, and owl claws. Back in the hut, those ingredients flow through an alchemical apparatus heated by its flames, ultimately producing one deadly poison.

The ingredients brought back from the Forest are placed in each player’s Alchilab, a personal puzzle where the goal is to create the most toxic poison possible. The Alchilab is made up of interlocking vials of different shapes, arranged in a rectangular pattern. The vials are initially empty, and players decide which type of ingredient each one will contain by placing its first ingredient. From then on, that vial must be filled exclusively with that type.

Every round begins in the Forest. Resources are added to the spaces on the central board, with anything left over from the previous round remaining in place and making those locations increasingly tempting. Players then take turns sending their familiars into the Forest. The gathering spot where they land determines which spaces they will collect from, making every placement a choice about both what to collect and what to deny your opponents.

This creates a simple but surprisingly engaging spatial puzzle. The challenge is to make the most of the ingredients you have collected by distributing them efficiently among the vials, while also keeping an eye on the columns running through the Alchilab. Completing a column unlocks a bonus token, providing an immediate benefit such as extra resources to use immediately or an increase in the Toxicity of a type of ingredient.

The crucial part is that all familiars are committed before any resources are collected. Only then does the harvest begin, starting

But the benefits do not stop there. Each completed column also releases flames beneath the Alchilab. Once released, a flame starts 16

generating points at the end of every round. This adds another layer of timing to the puzzle: completing a column early not only gives you an immediate benefit, but also contributes to your score for more rounds. The original design question from 2017 — how much is speed worth? — ended up influencing much more of the game than we initially expected. Despite this depth, the basic rules of Drops of Evil are deliberately straightforward. Much of the variety comes from how the game is set up rather than from adding layers of complexity. There are different Forest boards depending on the number of players, altering the dynamics of competition for resources. The layout of bonus tokens in each Alchilab is randomized at the beginning of every game, while remaining identical for all players, so everyone faces the same puzzle but the priorities change from game to game. Each game also features a different selection of Assistants, providing special actions, while two Recipes introduce alternative ways of scoring. Together, these elements create many different strategic situations without requiring players to learn a completely different game each time. Sustainability was also a consideration in the physical design of Drops of Evil. All components, including the box insert, are made from paper or wood, with no plastic used. Ten years after that first idea in Nuremberg, it is striking how much of the original design is still recognizable in the final game. The core grabbing mechanism and the basic structure of the board have remained surprisingly close to that first concept; it is everything built around them that has evolved over the years, growing into a game where timing, resource management, spatial planning, and risk all come together, without losing sight of the idea that started it all. What began as a single experiment with worker placement eventually became a game about competing for resources, making the most of what you manage to bring home, and turning every advantage you can seize into the most toxic poison possible. Noppen analyses the trying circumstances from which Operation Menace was born, including how the impulsive and overly optimistic attitudes of Churchill and de Gaulle overlooked clear warning signs, and examines how this failure would help prepare the Allies for success later in the war. Throughout the war on the Eastern Front, there were two consistent trends. The Red Army battled to learn how to win, while involved in a struggle for its very survival. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far better equipment than before. STOP CHARGING STRAIGHT AHEAD by Monster Motto If you’ve ever played in a fantasy tabletop campaign, you know the routine: the Game Master spends five minutes describing a ruined village, narrow alleys, a raised platform, and a suspicious-looking doorway. Then initiative starts, and everyone charges straight at the nearest monster. Alex, a rogue in his group’s campaign, was especially guilty of this. His combat strategy could usually be summarized as “run forward, stab something, hope for the best.” It worked surprisingly often. Until it didn’t. During one ugly village encounter, Alex ran into the center of the battlefield, got surrounded by three enemies, and spent the next several rounds wondering why nobody had mentioned the perfectly usable second-floor balcony sitting ten inches away from his miniature. They had. He just wasn’t looking at the battlefield as part of the strategy. THE BATTLEFIELD IS PART OF YOUR CHARACTER SHEET That started to change once the group began using Monster Adventure Terrain MONRMATSCORP547 . They originally picked it up because they wanted their encounters to look better. The modular walls, floors, doors, rooftops, and elevation pieces made the table feel less like graph paper and more like an actual environment. What they did not expect was how much it changed the way they played. Alex started noticing windows. The fighter noticed narrow doorways. The ranger developed a deep emotional attachment to rooftops. Even the wizard, who traditionally treated positioning as something that happened to other people, began hiding behind walls. The party was finally using the terrain instead of simply admiring it. STOP GIVING THE MONSTERS A FAIR FIGHT One of the first lessons was simple: open space is usually great for the monsters. A large room gives enemies space to surround the party. A narrow alley does not. During another encounter, the group faced several creatures inside a village building. Their old strategy would have been to kick down the door and rush inside. Instead, the fighter stopped in the doorway. Only a few enemies could reach him at once, while the ranger and spellcasters attacked from behind. The creatures that would have surrounded the party suddenly had to squeeze through a limited space. It was not heroic. It was extremely effective. Monster Adventure Terrain’s true one-inch grid made everything easy to understand. Everyone could see how many characters fit through an opening and exactly where the front line started. No measuring. No debating. No one insisted their miniature was “technically half a square farther back.” LOOK UP The next lesson was even simpler: terrain has height. That sounds obvious until you realize how many players spend an entire campaign staring only at floor tiles. Monster Adventure Terrain’s modular pieces allow buildings to include raised floors, rooftops, platforms, and multiple levels. Those areas are not just there to 32

make the village look impressive. They are tactical positions. The ranger quickly discovered that rooftops gave him a better view. Alex started using upper floors to move around enemies. Spellcasters began taking positions behind elevated walls where they could still influence the fight without standing in the middle of it. The party had spent years treating combat like a two-dimensional board game. Now they were thinking vertically. WALLS ARE SURPRISINGLY USEFUL Another discovery: walls are excellent at being walls. Enemy archers become much less intimidating when they cannot see you. During one encounter, the party was taking ranged attacks from across a courtyard. Instead of trading attacks in the open, they moved behind a building. The enemies had to reposition, giving the party time to move through a side passage and approach from another direction. Suddenly, the terrain was doing some of the work for them. Three-dimensional walls also made line of sight easier to understand. Nobody needed to remember that a marker on a flat map represented a six-foot barrier. There was an actual barrier sitting on the table. TREAT THE ENVIRONMENT LIKE EQUIPMENT Eventually, the group stopped thinking about Monster Adventure Terrain as scenery and started treating the battlefield like another piece of equipment. Doorways became choke points. Windows became alternate entrances. Staircases became defensive positions. Corners became cover. Buildings became places to retreat, regroup, or attack from somewhere unexpected. Because Monster Adventure Terrain uses modular Easy-Snap pieces, the Game Master could also change the environment as the encounter developed. A new room could be revealed, a doorway could open, or an upper level could suddenly become important. The battlefield stopped feeling like a static display. THE FIVE-SECOND STRATEGY CHECK The party eventually developed one simple habit before charging into combat: look at the terrain first.The fighter found the best place to hold the front line. Ranged characters looked for elevation. The rogue checked alternate routes. Spellcasters looked for safer positions. That tiny pause changed the way they approached encounters. Instead of several characters independently attacking whatever miniature happened to be closest, they started moving like an actual adventuring party. STOP SEEING SCENERY Monster Adventure Terrain may make a tabletop look better, but that is only half the point. Its modular buildings, walls, rooftops, pathways, and elevation pieces also create tactical choices. Use the doorway. Take the rooftop. Hide behind the wall. Control the narrow passage. And maybe, just once, do not sprint directly toward the largest monster in the room. Alex is still working on that last one. WELCOME TO THIS MONTH’S PAINTING TUTORIAL BY AH’LINA! In this issue we're going to cover how to quickly paint blends and transitions with Wet Blending, using the Kroxigor from Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar Seraphon line. Using just three brushes from Chronicle RPGs (two Techlon rounds and a drybrush), the Chronicle RPGs Wet Palette, and only 11 paints and a wash from The Army Painter's Fanatic line, you can have this lizard ready for your next session! Ah'lina is a Colorado-based miniature painter and content creator. He has been painting for six years, branching from army painting into display painting and more. He is passionate about teaching and making the hobby more accessible to everyone through classes and educational streams. Wet blending is a quick way to achieve natural transitions. It shines when fading two colors into each other, which makes it ideal for fur, or for the join between belly scales and outer scales on a lizard.

Start by basecoating everything you don't plan to blend. I used Deep Azure AMYWP3037 on the legs and torso of the model and Hydra Turquoise AMYWP3038 across the top with the Size 3 Techlon brush CHR12080B . By using two different colored basecoats, it helps build contrast before any blending begins.

With the rest of the model base coated, let’s try wetblending the belly. To wetblend, you need to be fast. I recommend using the Size 3 here. Slap on some Grey Castle AMYWP3007 at the center of the belly, then re-add Deep Azure where our base coat ended. Pull the Size 3 brush between the two fresh paints until a nice blend forms.

Paint that has started drying will tear, so once your wet blend has formed, stop and let it dry. Repeat the technique on the opposite side of the belly.

Highlight the belly by mixing in Brainmatter Beige AMYWP3011, Marine Mist AMYWP3042, and Ice Yellow AMYWP3096, as needed to our existing Deep Azure paint to make some wonderful blends and highlights. Use the Size 0 brush to highlight the muscle top.

Now the tail. Load Emerald Forest AMYWP3055at the tip of the tail with the Size 3. Rinse your brush and pull the wet paint along the edges to spread out the paint. This technique is called feathering, a great technique to make smooth blends! For extra vibrancy, mix the Lens Flare Glow AMYWP3178 into the Emerald Forest and paint it over the same area. Feather it out exactly as before. You should now see a vibrant green on the tail!

Now let’s add some character! Thin the Emerald Forest green with some water on your palette. Apply our thinned-down green to the backplates and then stipple it onto the leg scales with the Size 0. This adds a nice see-through green scale pattern to the legs!

Now let’s finish the mini! Base coat your metallics with Ruddy Umber AMYWP3184 to help your metallics have great coverage. Apply True Copper AMYWP3184 for the base metal and True Brass AMYWP3186 for the highlight with a Techlon S dry brush to get a nice “worn” look. Once the metals, bones, and jewelry are done give them a quick wash, such as Strong Skin Shade AMYWP3214, and enjoy your new Kroxigor! Here’s an example of what a “finished” session with the wet palette might look like! Mixing colors adds so many options!

Hatch baby sea turtles and guide them to the safety and shelter of the algae! On your turn you can hatch eggs, move turtles, and fuel up on food. Move your turtles onto the rotating tide to reach further parts of the Algal Mat. When one player gets all their hatchlings to the water, the game ends! Score points from your secret Tide Quest card and how you arrange your turtles on the Algal Mat—there are four different Algal Mats, and each Algal Mat scores differently. The player with the most points wins!

Tideward HSBG3933 first came to us in the form of neatly folded cardstock in a see-through plastic tub. I’m a huge fan of both Apiary and Wyrmspan, so I was pumped to sit down and play Connie’s prototype for the first time with Craig Van Ness, one of our Avalon Hill game designers (and one of the best people to play a game with). The premise of the game was the same as it is now: hatch baby turtles, lead them to the water, avoid the predators along the tide, and guide them to the safety of the algae. It’s based on their real-world journey! Floating patches of algae act as nurseries, providing shelter, warmth, and food for young turtles. The mechanics were already deeply rooted in the narrative. I don’t remember who won our first game (probably me, right?), but I do remember Craig and me racing to the Avalon Hill director’s office to demand, with lightly veiled threats*, that we bring this game into the Avalon Hill portfolio. Craig, typically a stern critic, was exclaiming things like, “Slam dunk.” I was saying office-appropriate things like, “I need this turtle game or I’ll die.” Taped-up cardstock, a rotating current that didn’t rotate, and the best written rules I’ve ever seen in a designer submission: Connie had a gem. Thankfully our director took our threats** seriously (i.e. played the game and loved it), and we got to work. My role is all about world creation and storytelling, and how that story reaches the player through each component. The first question we ask: who’s the player? Tideward is a lighter-weight strategy game that hits a sweet spot of complexity without too much baggage. Great for casual adult gamers and families with teens, or as a warm-up before something heavier. A game about baby sea turtles could potentially skew more childish than the gameplay—and our target audience—warrants, so after talking it through with Connie, we landed on the game’s tone and feel: a story grounded in scientific reality (to elevate it as a game for adults), but buoyed by warmth, curiosity, and hope.

Connie originally called the game Hatch, which was so charming but didn’t clear our trademark search. During a name brainstorm, fellow narrative designer Annie Caruana came up with an invented term, “Tideward”—meaning toward the tide. I love how it speaks to the journey the hatchlings take.

*No directors were actually threatened in the making of Tideward. **We promise.

Never childish, never pretentious, always lighthearted. In the real world, most hatchlings don’t survive to adulthood. In Tideward, we take a hopeful, aspirational approach to the adversity these brave young turtles face. The hatchlings of Tideward are epic heroes, and we treat them as such. With the tone established, it was time for my favorite part of any game: research! I set the game in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, home to the largest green sea turtle rookery in the Western Hemisphere. Its name, land of turtles, honors the special creatures of our game. With the brilliance of Samy Ventura, the art director, the world began to take shape. Each species in the game can be found in Tortuguero or nearby foraging grounds along the Caribbean coast. Hatchlings typically emerge at night, so our game does too, with Atlantic ghost crabs as our nimble nocturnal predators. Did you know that when hatchlings climb out of the sand, they’re instinctively drawn to the brightest part of the horizon? In other words, the moon and stars over the water. Samy incorporated that fact beautifully into the cover design, and it became our north star in the development of the game: just like our tiny heroes, we followed the moon! To balance the scientific rigor, we infused humor and whimsy. Private objectives became Tide Quests with cheeky names; the art style became vivid and playfully stylized. I partnered with Morgan Moscinski, an

outstanding creative designer with a great eye for rulebook design, to create the game guide, which we tested and refined throughout development alongside Connie's feedback. The tide board began rotating smoothly thanks to the efforts of Craig, our engineer Michael Luther, and packaging engineer Phil Howie. Michael also worked with our sustainability partner, Ian Gaudreau, to ensure the final product is entirely composed of FSC-certified materials with no single-use plastics. To keep the science honest, we called in the experts. I reached out to David Godfrey, director of the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC).

The STC is the world’s oldest sea turtle research and conservation group. Its founder, Dr. Archie Carr, began monitoring Tortuguero's green sea turtles in 1955 and helped establish Tortuguero National Park. David was warm, passionate, and generous with his knowledge—just who you’d hope to find protecting sea turtles. He reviewed the game’s scientific language and offered valuable feedback, and that initial connection with the STC grew into a once-in-a-lifetime trip. This past September, Connie, the Avalon Hill team, and some key creator partners traveled down to Tortuguero, where the STC still conducts sea turtle monitoring and research. The village can only be reached by boat or plane, so we packed into a tiny puddle-jumper and spilled out into the rainforest. There we met our wonderful STC guide Evan Cooper and the knowledgeable, passionate staff at the station. We donned dark clothing and joined Raúl García Varela, the STC research coordinator for Central America, on a nighttime nest survey lit by a few beams of red light. Stumbling over dunes, we watched adult females haul themselves ashore to lay their eggs. It's a laborious process—each turtle digs a pit to settle her body into the sand, then scoops out a deeper chamber for her eggs with her rear flippers. The next morning, we walked the beach with research assistants, marking the fresh tracks the mother turtles had left in their wake: deep grooves curving through the sand like a crescent moon. It wasn’t just turtles we found in Tortuguero—we saw sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, a fantastic array of birds, and of course everyone’s favorite frenemy, the Atlantic ghost crab. During our stay, the research team found a predated nest—likely the work of a dog, a common introduced predator in Tortuguero. The hatchlings weren't fully formed and wouldn't have survived the scramble to the water, so the team collected them and cared for them for about a day before an assisted release: the staff set the hatchlings down at the top of the beach, where the nest had been, and we watched as the turtles flung themselves forward, bit by bit, across a seemingly insurmountable distance. Each one smaller than the palm of my hand; each one clumsy and flailing; each one the tiny hero of its own story.

For a long time, board games based on IPs weren’t very good. It felt like they were cash-ins on whatever popular TV show or movie was hot at the time (Lost and 24 board games - I’m looking at you!). Slowly, IP games started to come out that were actually good. Battlestar Galactica was one of the first, and it was so well received that it sent a message throughout the industry: gamers want great games based on the IPs that they love. Off the Page Games has decided to focus their efforts on lesser-known comics that have received recognition in the industry for being some of the best comics ever created. The strategy has always been to make an amazing game that can be enjoyed by those who have never heard of the comic, but fans of the comic will get even more out of it. This strategy is paying off and turning these games into mini-Evergreen games. Not only are these comics still for sale today, which increases the audience for those who would be interested in the game, but comics like MIND MGMT have brand new issues being released this year. Some of these comics even have had discussions about turning them into television series or movies! For retailers that sell board games and comics, keeping these games in stock is a no-brainer! MIND MGMT: The Psychic Espionage “Game” BTIOTPG001 was their first game and it became a big hit, appearing on over 20 top 10 lists for 2021. The ability to play a hidden movement game in under an hour was a huge draw. It even came with an app so players could play it solo or cooperatively against the app. It feels like you’re playing a game INSIDE the comic of MIND MGMT as Matt Kindt, the writer and artist of the comic, created all new art for the game. Next was Harrow County: The Game of Gothic Horror, a 1v1 asymmetric game where each faction has different objectives. Combat is resolved using a cube tower that is built into the box cover! It even comes with a faction to play as a third player. Then came Corps of Discovery OTP641064, based on the comic, Manifest Destiny. This is the story of Lewis and Clark exploring America…but it’s full of monsters. This 1-4 player logic deduction game was on over 20 top 10 lists for 2025! The game is played on a dual-layered contraption, where you slide a new map into it every time you play. Players search for specific resources by revealing spaces on this map. Every single resource has a rule on where it’s located, so players have to work together to use these logic rules to find the resources they need to survive, while trying to accomplish their objectives. Each gameplay chapter lifts elements from the comics, while finding a way to make players feel tense as they explore the land searching for monsters.

Off the Page Games continues to grow with three new games releasing soon: Grendel, The Creeps, and Corps of Discovery Duo! Grendel: The Game of Crime and Mayhem OTPGG001 is a 1-4 player competitive area control game where each faction has a totally different way to play: bag building, dice allocation, push your luck, and a rondel. Players add tokens of different weights to the three towers and when enough weight is in them, they cause the tower to trigger and we enter the Mayhem phase! No one knows exactly when a tower will trigger, so each turn is full of tension. It’s fair to call Matt Wagner’s Grendel a seminal comic in the history of comics, and the game manages to bring the graphic design, illustrations, and themes to tabletop in clever ways. The Creeps: The Monster-Trapping Game OTPGTC001 is a 2-5 player family game of kid detectives trying to trap monsters! Based on 3 graphic novels by Chris Schweizer, players play dual sided cards under the matching monster token in an effort to predict which monsters will have the most cards assigned to them. Only the top 4 will score and you only score by having those cards in your hand. Make uneasy alliances as you support each other when it benefits you, or play trap cards to pull the rug out from under your opponents. A family mode is included, which is great for younger players to learn the game! Corps of Discovery Duo OTPGCODDUO001 is a 2-player only game that tasks you with creating a map, instead of exploring it. Using logic rules, some of which are communally known and some are privately known, players must build a map that adheres to all the rules. Add monsters and variable difficulty with hazard and upgrade cards, and you have another engaging entry in this rich comic world that’s full of great concepts and art. Each is designed for 2 players and takes about 2 hours.

mobilization. In the Grand Alliance scenario, there’s another bonus: Diplomacy tokens. As a team, you’ll secretly draw 2 of 12 tokens at the beginning of the game, each with a different effect depending on which team uses it. For example, one token activates Turkey; another changes which round the USA gets into the fight. Getting the rules and components needed to create one giant game is pretty exciting, but what’s more interesting is the holistic effect that significantly increases the sophistication of play.

What makes West Front special is that it includes everything you need to combine 2 or 3 of the titles into one massive game. Combine West Front and South Front for the ETO scenario. ETO plays through the entire war between the European Axis and the Western Allies of France, the UK, and the USA, and can be played by 2 to 4 people in 4-5 hours. Add East Front to play the Grand Alliance scenario, for 2 to 5 players over 7ish hours. If you are a perfectionist, you can also add the Front Series Deluxe Game Mat AREARTG040 featuring all three boards together, but this beautiful accessory is not required to play.

First, you’ll notice a lot more of your reactions are usable; only France and the USA share a deck. Next, you’ll realize your cards can be used in new ways – the Romanian and Hungarian cards from East Front can be used to attack Yugoslavia. The Allies will quickly see how rapidly they can move pieces between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. All this extra flexibility means there’s a lot more to think about. The next wrinkle you’ll note is that you have a lot of flexibility in how you use your actions. In the individual Front games, players generally receive 1 or 2 actions per turn. The Grand Alliance scenario gives each side 3 actions per turn to start, and 4 actions once the Soviet Union is at war with Germany. The combinatorial possibilities between cards increase significantly!

In addition to rules explaining how to combine the games, extra cards cover periods not depicted in the individual Front titles. For example, East Front begins with the invasion of the Soviet Union; since the combined game begins in September 1939, you’ll find cards representing the Winter War in Finland, conflict in the Balkans, and

From the beginning, the two Western Allies players need to be talking constantly. With 2 successive actions, the Western Allies gain capabilities unavailable in West Front alone, which should give the Axis pause. France can attack an Axis-occupied space, and the UK can do it again, or move in! But as always in Quartermaster General, actions are the most precious resource - a bold strategy in France might result in a loss in North Africa.

Twice I’ve used the term “sophistication” to describe the combined game scenarios, because I do not want to give the impression that the rules are more difficult than any of the three games individually – not at all! I use the term to describe the complexity of decisionmaking, and, if you’re playing with more than 2 people, the complexity of working with teammates to accomplish a shared goal. The combined game was always the end-point of the Front series design, and overall, the significantly expanded strategic options provide an experience that exceeds that of any of the three games individually.

Very early on, the Pact needs to both mobilize and keep the Soviets from absorbing Finland and the Balkans. Sometime in Spring or Summer 1940, the Axis should realize that the best way to defeat France is for them to coordinate their actions closely. The war in the Mediterranean will be much more difficult with the French Navy intact, which means taking Paris quickly. The Pact either attacks the Western Allies now or faces them on their opponents’ terms. Once France has fallen and the fates of Finland, Hungary, and Romania have been resolved, the Axis has some strategic freedom to use their three actions as they wish. Generally, it is best to follow the cards you draw to maximize the effectiveness of each card. It is usually (but not always!) better to create combinations to strike a devastating blow in a particular area, rather than doggedly pursuing an objective you don’t have the resources to obtain. The careful hand management required in the individual Front games doesn’t go away!

In 1941, the Axis will find they must attack the Soviet Union, or allow the Soviets a game-winning first strike. If their defense on the other fronts is adequate, the Axis can use all four actions at once in the East! Now the sophistication reaches its culmination. The Western Allies can directly help the Soviets through contingency cards, but otherwise must shift their stance forward to force the Axis to defend against them. It is easy for the Western Allies to take a few turns getting their ducks in a row while ignoring the Soviet plight – do so at your peril!

Despite his mutations, Leo continues to display unquestioning subservience to his S-1 masters, executing a covert and sanguinary campaign against the foes of the United States.

Commissar Gregor Drugov is a formidable figure within the Soviet Political Commissariat. Known for his imposing stature and aggressive nature, Drugov’s fervent dedication to the Rodina propelled him swiftly through the ranks. He was one of the first to volunteer as a human test subject for the Ursus initiative. He died three times on the operating table due to the extreme bodily manipulation he endured, but each time Soviet science brought him back to life and the agonising process continued. Despite these modifications, Drugov’s trademark ferocity remained undiminished and, if anything, was felt to be considerably enhanced. Drugov’s shock assaults have proved so effective that both Allied and Axis forces have been given standing orders to terminate Drugov with extreme prejudice wherever he may be encountered. So far, no soldier or agent has succeeded in this task.

by Tony Tran There were 3 main design problems for Pressed: how to place cards, what cards to include, and the final scoring. Players originally played all 4 cards from their hand at one time. This was quickly changed after it proved too large of a decision space and too much downtime. Changing it to only 1 card per player per turn wonderfully fixes both these issues. The cards needed to have interesting effects while still uniquely being able to be playable in the middle area and in their private scoring area. I wanted each card to have unique effects while having strong and weak points to be advantageous to play at different board states. For example, the Zinnia scores 5 points if it is the only Zinnia in its row and column. A Zinnia should be played early and in different columns and rows to score and press only 1 for final scoring. However, you may choose to place it for 0 points to sandbag your score. In addition, if you can somehow force a player to draft then press a 2nd Zinnia, they lose 2 cards in final scoring. For such a simple card, there are many layers of strategy. I used the same design goal for each card in Pressed.

Pressed PTZ734175 has a long story from designing to where it is now. It started on a car ride to work in a new office in Spring of 2021. I was midway through a 70 minute commute when the idea struck me: a game about players communally playing flower cards in a shared area then selfishly taking those cards for themselves. That idea has stayed true even now.

Finally, the hardest obstacle was solving how final scores are calculated. At first, I had this incredibly convoluted mathematical way that required multiplication and logic unique to the final scoring. In true designer fashion, my game was much more complicated than I thought. For example, the Rose card ultimately scores the same as it does now but you had to add up each Rose and each value was different. The first Rose would be 2 points, 2nd was 3 points, 3rd was 5 points, etc so you would add 2+3+5+... Playtesters assumed it was more straightforward (like the rest of the game) so went with a more simple process. They thought if you had 3 Roses, it would score 5 points (either 5 points total or 5 points each, it was unclear).

I turned off the radio and nailed down the core loop during the rest of the drive. After settling at my desk, I quickly filled out a Google Sheets with different card ideas before work started. Like other designs, many of those cards did not survive playtesting. Narrowing down to the best 12 cards took 5 years over numerous playtests.

I learned a very valuable lesson through Pressed: the complexity of the game should stay consistent, especially for a game of this weight. I pivoted hard to the most direct final scoring system and it worked. Cards now handle most of the math for players and streamlines the once hardest part of the game. Now you just look at how many Roses you had and the points are right there on the card, all added up for you.

Pressed was originally signed in Fall of 2022 with Cabin Games. I pitched it at a speed dating event at Origins 2022. I was given the offer and was ecstatic. It was the 2nd game I signed with a publisher and I would be working with outstanding people like Nikki Valens and Beth Sobel. Sadly, due to COVID-19, the contract was cancelled and the IP returned back to me in 2023. I was heartbroken. As part of my contract with Cabin Games, I would receive the art done by Beth Sobel. I loved how it looked and even framed the pictures for my game room. Looking at it everyday gave me motivation to pitch it again. At Pax Unplugged 2023, I set the game up at the Unpub booth. I set up my table late and in the back after everyone got their playtests started. Zev Shlasinger came by and played a few turns. I could see his brain churning. He enjoyed it and said something along the lines of “Find me later and we can talk about it”. After what felt like forever, it dawned on me we never exchanged information. I put it on the backburner the rest of the convention knowing I would not run into him again in a convention of 30,000 people. Call it fate or call it a coincidence, I ran into Zev that same night walking the hall and I got his email. After a new contract was signed, I got to work on more playtesting and writing the rulebook. I looped my friend Ben Jones to help with development, which it sorely needed, to help fix the issue with final scoring and balance. His help was instrumental for helping us cross the finish line. Regardless of how commercially successful Pressed becomes, I am very proud of it and all the work everyone has put into it.
