WE’RE IMPROVING... The Market Place Theatre is set to get even better! In Spring 2020, the theatre will undergo some building works. The changes made will improve this much loved arts venue and its facilities and enhance your experience as a visitor, audience member or conference goer. Our customers can look forward to some really exciting changes and improvements. The foyer area will be upgraded throughout, with a new Box Office, multi-purpose reception area and open terrace. Key facilities will be vastly improved, with a new contemporary bar, refurbished bathroom facilities, more wheelchair spaces and state of the art workshop and conference rooms. The Market Place Theatre will remain operational throughout the period of these improvements though there will be some disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. During this time, it will be necessary to hold part of our workshop programme in alternative venues and full details of this are available on the workshop pages.
The adjoining multi-storey car park will also be undergoing a series of enhancement works during this time, updating the facility and ensuring better access for all. It will be necessary to close the car park facility whilst work is underway. Alternative car parking is available close by in the city centre. EVA CASSIDY: THE STORY Elsa Jean McTaggart returns to The Market Place Theatre with her show ‘Eva Cassidy: The Story’, with some new songs for 2020. In this engaging portrayal of the life of Eva Cassidy, Elsa Jean McTaggart presents a tribute to her all-time favourite artist in video, voice and song. With her voice and guitar, she brings alive the essence of Eva as she relates the songs to the beautiful and yet tragic story of one of the world’s most iconic voices. Elsa’s voice has been described as ‘smooth as velvet... sultry’.
Bagatelle started out in 1978 at a time when original bands weren’t all that successful in Ireland. In fact, the idea of a band touring nationwide with a full original music set just didn’t work out… for most! However, Bagatelle’s music did work, and would establish them firmly on the Irish music circuit and worldwide.
Over those 40 years they have had several No 1 singles with Iconic songs like ‘Summer In Dublin’, ‘Second Violin’, and ‘Trump Card’. They have shared stages with legends like Bob Marley, John Denver, The Pogues, Duran Duran, Van Morrison, George Micheal, U2, Jose Feliciano and UB40.

ARMAGH STORIES: VOICES FROM THE GAOL Wed 5 Feb | 7.30pm Free but pre-booking essential ‘Armagh Stories: Voices from the Gaol’ is a documentary film edited from interviews conducted inside Armagh Gaol in 2006 as part of the Prisons Memory Archive. Armagh Gaol served as Northern Ireland’s only female prison during the Troubles until its closure in 1986. At the height of the conflict, the number of women imprisoned grew from two in 1971 to more than one hundred between 1972 and 1976. Due to the growing prison population during the Troubles, Armagh also housed male remand and sentenced prisoners. The film addresses a conflicted past in a contested present, with prison staff, prisoners, chaplains, doctors, solicitors and teachers telling us of their experiences, mostly for the first time, back in the Victorian site. While the film offers validation of each story and participant, at the same time it also challenges our assumptions about the past, and the roles of those who experienced it. Following the screening there will be a special panel discussion with director Cahal McLaughlin and film participants.

In Ireland, he is either unknown or reviled as a traitor - a republican-turned-colonial loyalist. In this imaginative play, written by Anthony Russell, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, Irish rebel and Canadian patriot is called from the grave to answer, in the Court of History, the charge that he committed treason against Ireland and her people. Monaghan’s Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, the former Prime Minister of Victoria, is the defence lawyer who defends Thomas D’Arcy McGee against the charge of treason. The prosecutor is Newry’s John Mitchel, an unrepentant physical force republican from Young Ireland. Both lawyers have returned from the grave for the occasion. John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of the Canadian Confederation, whose reputation is now tarnished because of his treatment of the first nations, is called as a witness for the prosecution. McGee’s long suffering and loyal wife, Mary Teresa Caffrey is called as a witness for the defence. All of the ghosts are aware of what has happened in the world since they entered the grave and comment accordingly. The audience is the jury and the protocol of an earthly court loosely applies. The stunning Ulster Orchestra are back at The Market Place for another wonderful evening of music, during which they will perform Beethoven’s Overture: Egmont, Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto, Amy Rooney IX, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto is a sparky, stormy work, with snare drum rolls challenging and goading the soloist to ever-greater heights of virtuosity.
Clarinettist Mark Simpson shot to fame when he won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2006 playing the Nielsen Concerto, and it is a work that he still plays with a deep personal attachment. Alongside this we showcase a new work by upand-coming Northern Irish composer Amy Rooney, and, marking his 250th birthday year, the concert opens and closes with Beethoven. The Overture to Egmont is quintessential Beethoven, with its stately opening that builds to a thrilling, powerful finale, whilst Symphony No. 4 was famously described by Schumann as ‘a slender Grecian maiden between two Nordic giants [the Third and Fifth Symphonies]’ and is energetic and sunny, with a slow movement so lovely that Berlioz believed it had been written by the Archangel Michael and not a human at all!

BRENDAN QUINN: TICKING OVER Sat 16 May | 8.00pm | £20.00 i Brendan Quinn started out in the music business as a guitar player with ‘The Malachi Doris Ceili Band’ at the age of 15. While playing in various Irish showbands like ‘The Breakaways’ and ‘The Signs’, he recorded Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’ in 1969 which received extensive airplay in Ireland. 1972 saw Brendan with an Irish No 1 with ‘It’s Four In The Morning’. There then followed a string of hit records such as ‘Bandy The Rodeo Clown’, ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’, ’To Daddy’ and ‘Angeline Would You Like To Dance Again’. Since then, Brendan has recorded numerous albums, toured Ireland, the UK, Canada and the States, and presented TV shows including ‘Make Mine Country’. From 2000, Brendan has pursued his interest in songwriting and has released quite a lot of his own material on his recent albums. His latest offering ‘Tickin’ Over’ has been highly acclaimed and received massive airplay. His latest single ‘I Have Met My Love Today’ is still riding high in the charts.

Join experienced potter, Thomas Powell, and learn how to throw on the potter’s wheel in this relaxing and therapeutic workshop. Each prospective potter will get to throw on the potter’s wheel and will also decorate two mugs each with their own design, as well as trying their hand at other techniques including coiling and pulling handles. Participants will end the day with a selection of pots which Thomas will take back to his workshop to be glazed and fired in a kiln. The pots will be ready for collection from The Market Place Theatre a few weeks later. Learn the secrets of the pros in an active and lively environment. Each week will look at a different aspect of photography, which participants can then explore and experiment with in between classes. Subjects will include framing, proportion, lighting, photographing subjects including landscape, people and portraits, action photography, night shots, still life and abstract forms. The first part of each class is devoted to reviewing the shots taken since the previous week. The exhibition Stray Sod is the culmination of her work at the museum and uses the Irish folk tradition of the fóidín meara to demonstrate that we often don’t have to stray far from the familiar path to be transported into a world where everything is suddenly disorienting.
The Armagh born artist’s work gives us a window into the layers of the past and the ways in which we are connected to, and shaped by it. This fresh look at one of Ireland’s strongest museum collections underlines how a userled democratised approach to a collection’s interpretation can cast new light on the familiar and create new narratives and debates.

A mixture of portraiture and landscape work, all shot on 35mm or 120 film, his work attempts to create visual narratives from a single or multiple image, often incorporating a lone figure or a single face.

As well as a long career as an actor, O’Conor has written and directed awardwinning short films for the Irish Film Board, and created music videos for artists such as Sinéad O’Connor and Little Green Cars. He was awarded the George Byrne ‘Maverick’ award at the 2019 Dublin Film Critics’ Circle for his photography and film work. His feature-directing debut, Metal Heart, released in Irish cinemas in June. As a fine art photographer he has exhibited at the RHA Dublin and the RUA in Belfast, as well as SO Fine Art, Solomon Fine Art and the Cherrylane Gallery in Dublin. He was shortlisted for the inaugural Hennessy Portrait Prize at the National Gallery of Ireland in 2014. His work has been widely published in national and international periodicals. His three portrait exhibitions, Celebrating Irish Talent, were commissioned as part of the Dublin Film Festival 2017-2019.

The artworks suggest how works of art and people evolve over time. The Arts Care Artists-in-Residence in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Jill McKeown, Eddie Rafferty and Gwen Stevenson, facilitate participants to create artwork for themselves and to enhance their environments. This work is a testimony to the impact art has on staff, service users, family and visitors to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

BUILE SHUIBHNE ‘SWEENEY ASTRAY’ CALLIGRAPHIC PAINTINGS BY DESMOND KINNEY Fri 6 March - Sat 18 April | Gallery Northern Ireland born international artist Desmond Kinney is best known for his revival of the technique of working with mosaics, through various large-scale murals and public art works mainly focused on Irish myths and legends. In the 1980’s he started illustrated calligraphy, working on Seamus Heaney’s translation Sweeney Astray, creating paintings in the medium of watercolour. The Home of Saint Patrick Festival 2020 and The Market Place Gallery are delighted to exhibit sixteen of Kinney’s stunning illustrations which have never been exhibited publicly before. Buile Shuibhne, in English ‘The Madness of Sweeney’, is an old Irish myth immortalised in verse composed during the 12th Century. It tells the story of Sweeney, King of the Dál nAraidi, who commits violent acts against St. Ronan Finn and his monks, and is cursed to wander naked around Ireland. Sweeney is driven mad by the curse, becoming a wildman living in forests and wilderness and at one point grows feathers like a bird. The poem inspired many writers, including Seamus Heaney, who made his own translation of it, published in 1984. Heaney’s friend, artist Desmond Kinney, enamoured by the work, turned it into a series of watercolours featuring his personalised calligraphy [a medium he had trained in as a student], and illustrated vignettes of the mad king living in trees, existing wild and unkempt, a tormented soul. The paintings are highly idiosyncratic, redolent of medieval manuscripts, yet also contemporary in their graphic composition. Desmond Kinney also transformed the Buile Shuibhne into a large mosaic frieze which is situated at the University of Limerick. The mosaic made in Venetian vitrious glass features quotations from Seamus Heaney’s text. The poet and the painter remained lifelong friends.

The Life of Objects explores the processes of print on abandoned and forgotten materials, giving them new life. Handkerchiefs may have lost their currency as an essential everyday object; but with today’s trend of repair and re-use, a bag full of hankies, little hemmed squares dyed with hue from yesteryear, did not pass me by. I have dozens and dozens of them and they are not precious to me, they have become the anchors for doodles and playful design. The screen ink I use sinks deep into their fibres and the residual marks on their reverse is
intriguing, the image is disrupted and a feather-like trace emerges. This contemplative mark making process leads to different outcomes both as framed and sculptural works. The common connection for this collection is memory, materialism, history and the onetime consuming labour of craft - not least the folding of hankies, the once norm for every day. Maybe the life of objects is not about recycling; it’s more about re-loving.
Road bowling or ‘throwing the bullet’, is primarily associated with the counties of Armagh and Cork. It is somewhat idiosyncratic as a pursuit, disputed as to its origins and in some ways seemingly a legacy of a previous era, involving nothing more than participants taking turns at throwing an iron and steel ball as far down a country road as possible. Yet healthy numbers continue to spectate and to stroll alongside the players whilst many frequently wager not insignificant amounts on the prospective winners. The photographs in this exhibition show people and environments from these two regions, both players and spectators of the sport. The photographs were made by Michael Bradley in Cork and Colin Robins assisted by Joonas Aitonurmi in Armagh.

It researches mapping of locality. It examines how clay forms interplay and balance, exploring precarious constructions. Grid forms reflect journeys around places of personal importance. Clay forms explore movement and contortion, seeking out unusual, abstracted structures. Michael Moore is Reader in Fine and Applied Arts at Ulster University. He has works in the permanent collections of the Ulster Museum, National Museum of Ireland. He is an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a registered maker with Craft NI and the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland. For some performances, a support act will precede the headline act, particularly for popular music events and comedy. Whilst The Market Place endeavours to inform patrons about such support acts in advance, on some occasions this may not be possible. CHILDREN Children aged two and under may attend suitable performances for free but must be seated and must be in possession of a valid ticket. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE Our staff are delighted to provide special assistance, if required, to disabled and other theatregoers. Our facilities include spaces for ten wheelchairs, lifts to all levels of the building, low level access at the Box Office, and an infra-red system to assist patrons with hearing difficulties. Customers using wheelchairs or those who require special assistance attending an event should contact the Box Office in advance so that appropriate assistance can be arranged.
