TENX9 Thurs 6 June | 8.00pm | Free i Tenx9 is a storytelling event where nine people have up to ten minutes each to tell a true story from their lives. Started in Belfast in 2011 by Paul Doran and Pádraig Ó Tuama, Tenx9 now takes place in seventeen cities worldwide, and is a firm favourite on the Belfast arts scene. Curating true stories at these events, the organisers support new and established storytellers in this enormously popular evening. Admission to this event is free. Pre-booking is not required.

CELTIC PSALMS: REST IN THE SHELTER Fri 7 June | 8.00pm | £10.00 i In an evening of song, Kiran Young Wimberly and the McGraths will share music from their newest album of Celtic Psalms, as well as old favourites from previous albums. With soulful voices, rich harmonies and traditional instrumentation, these arrangements of psalms to Irish and Scottish melodies, bring fresh life to ancient words.

Kiran Young Wimberly, an American Presbyterian minister who has spent much of the past decade in Northern Ireland, and the McGrath family of Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, have shared their music with diverse communities here in Northern Ireland and abroad.

Their music has featured on the BBC televised series ‘Then Sings My Soul’, as well

as Sunday services with RTE and the BBC. Building bridges between traditional and sacred music, and tapping into some deeper human emotions of joy and sorrow, lament and hope, this event is sure to be healing balm for the soul.

‘The Chronic Identity Crisis of Pamplemousse’ is a new 30-minute opera written for Key Stage 2 children with a positive message about friendship and self-confidence. Children will get the opportunity before the performance to take part in an hour-long interactive workshop where they’ll be able to explore the music, themes and characters of this exciting new work.

A FESTIVAL OF CULTURE & CREATIVITY MON 22 JULY SAT 27 JULY Now in its 32nd year, the 2019 Summer School offers another attractive programme with a truly international flavour of readings, talks, workshops, discussions and evening shows, featuring well-known writers and performers and esteemed speakers from throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond. Whether you come for an event or two, a full day or a week, there is something on offer for everyone.

Among the prize-winning poets who will feature in the popular mid-morning slots are Mona Arshi and Zaffar Kunial [23 July], Fiona Benson and Mary Jean Chan [24 July], Billy Ramsell and Tamar Yoseloff [25 July], and Kerrie Hardie and Sarah Clancy [26 July]. Top prose writers will read from their recently published work in the ever-popular Lunchtime Fiction series: Ann Cleeves, Sarah Moss, Jennifer Makumbi-Morris, Kevin Barry and Joseph O’Connor. Billy Collins, twice US Poet Laureate and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and famously described as ‘the most popular poet in America’ by the New York Times, explores complicated contemporary lives and thoughts in engaging, humorous, often quirky poems. He has published over a dozen poetry collections including The Rain in Portugal [Random House, 2016]. Billy won many new admirers when he appeared at JHISS, with Seamus Heaney, in 2008.

Kathryn Maris, an American poet based in London, and author of three poetry collections, has been praised by the Times Literary Supplement for her ‘deadpan humour and cool dissection of domestic dysfunction in poetry that is playful, obsessive, irreverent’. A selection of her work appears in Penguin Modern Poets 5 and her third collection is The House With Only An Attic And A Basement [Penguin, 2018].

THE PAT MCMANUS BAND Thurs 8 Aug | 7.00pm | Admission Free The ever-popular Belvoir Players return for their now legendary Summer Theatre tour with the riproaring Sam Cree comedy, ‘Wedding Fever’.

Wedding fever is gripping the Galbraith household. Myra, daughter of football fanatic Alec, is due to marry canny countryman Dennis Hall. His farmer parents come to town to meet their prospective in-

laws and, as if this was not enough, American relations descend on the household.

To add further confusion, railway worker Alec is involved in a strike, son Davy has been in an accident and nosey neighbour Emily Beattie constantly gets in everyone’s way.

The ‘Pat McManus Band’ are a powerful three-piece blues | rock trio, headed up by the former ‘Mama’s Boys’ and ‘Celtus’ guitarist/violinist virtuoso Pat McManus. Pat is today considered to be one of the last remaining individual guitar heroes of a generation of Irish guitarists. ‘Mama’s Boys’ were one of the greatest rock bands to come out of Northern Ireland.

This year the band is celebrating Pat’s 40th year as a professional musician with the release of the acoustic retrospective album ‘Rewind’, which includes songs from Pat’s wide-ranging career. With a touring schedule packed to the max across Europe, they are ready to rock.

The Vietnam War had reached new heights with anti-war protests throughout the USA. Students were leading the way in all sorts of issues and the more liberal they became, the more governments rose to their audacious challenge.

Following on from the Civil Rights marches in the USA, here at home we set about our own marches for the same cause and this

story reflects on how a farming community in mid-Tyrone dealt with the complex issues that arose from the search for Civil Rights.

At that time dancing and country music were the main social diet albeit mostly one side of the community. Our story reflects how a young couple’s love of country music could transcend age-old tribal barriers, but not without a price to pay. The price of peace is often more expensive than we ever bargain for. In this case it most certainly was.

CARRICKMACROSS LACE SCARF [3 DAY SUMMER SCHOOL] Thurs 1 - Sat 3 Aug | 10.00am - 3.00pm each day | £65.00 Theresa Kelly, an award-winning lace maker, presents this workshop that teaches you the intricacies of the Carrickmacross Lace tradition, while creating beautiful ends for a silk scarf.

Theresa has designed a pattern especially for the workshop featuring the clematis plant. The pattern contains the technique of Carrickmacross Lace and can be adapted for the beginner and more advanced lace maker. During this three-day workshop you will learn traditional lacemaking techniques, gippure work, loops and filling in stitches. Pattern and materials for lace design are included. The lace pattern can also be adapted for a framed piece.

EUROPEAN ENCAUSTIC WAX PAINTING

WET FELTING RUFFLE CRATER BROOCH

Create a beautiful 3D wet felted, textured ruffle brooch with crater detail, under the guidance of textile artist Louisa Kelly. During the workshop you will learn wet felting techniques such as spikes, rainbow beads, craters, and balls which can be used to embellish and texture any of your wet felted projects.

Encaustic is the ancient art of painting using a beeswax medium with pigment in layers, fused with heat to the layer beneath to create a multi layered solid lustrous surface.

During this engaging popular workshop with Encaustic artist Niamh O’Connor, you will work with coloured wax on card manipulated by the use of specially supplied irons and adapted stylus tools. This easy introduction into the art of encaustic is suitable for people interested in card making or creating small scale simply achieved art pieces for scrapbooking or framing. You will leave the workshop with a range of cards and art works in different textures and colours. All materials and equipment provided, however attendees should bring an apron or wear old clothes.

Pamela and Irene will provide a short history of soap making, after which you will learn the ancient craft of soap making using the traditional cold process method. SMOKE IN MOTION NATHAN NESBITT Fri 7 June - Sat 13 July | Foyer Preview Opening 7 June at 7.00pm Visual Artist, Nathan Nesbitt, presents ‘Smoke in Motion’, an exploration of the unique surrealist technique fumage - the art of drawing with smoke.

Utilising an open flame to deposit trails of black smoke on paper, Nesbitt sculpts the plumes to capture the delicate, passionate motion of his subject. The use of a destructive force as a tool for creation encompasses the disparity of humanities and earth’s volatile nature which is a constant element present in all Nesbitt’s creations.

BLOOD HORSES PADDY LENNON & MOYRA DONALDSON Mon 22 July - Sat 7 Sep | GALLERY Poet Moyra Donaldson has had a lifelong involvement with horses, and on encountering the horse paintings of Wexford artist Paddy Lennon, contacted him to propose a collaboration.

The result is the stunning Blood Horses exhibition and limited edition book.

Words and images combine to evoke the history of our human relationship with these beautiful creatures, and the part horses play in the lives of those who work with them and ride them, the glories and tragedies of our partnership with them and their effect on us.

INDIAN FACES AND SCENES MALACHI O’DOHERTY Mon 22 July - Sat 7 Sep | FOYER WALLS Malachi O’Doherty travelled round the north of India with a camera, stopping to talk to people, snapping images of strangers, from the beggar on the street in Delhi to the labourer in Kolkata and the farmer in the Punjab.

The powerful impression of these pictures is of faces filled with character, faces sculpted by climate, hard living and deep reflection.

Malachi O’Doherty is a writer, broadcaster and photographer living in Belfast.

His books cover works of memoir and discussions on politics and culture. He is the author of ‘Fifty Years On’, published this year by Atlantic Books and of a novel to be published early next year by Merrion Press. Dr O’Doherty is a current recipient of a Major Individual Artist award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. This award funded his trip to India for research for another book and the photographs featured in this exhibition are a by-product of that research.
