DÓNAL CLANCY THE CLANCY LEGACY LIVES ON Thurs 13 Sept | 8.00pm | £12.00

BUILDING BRIDGES COMMUNITY ARTS THEATRE PRESENTS

ONE WAY TO BROADWAY Sat 8 Sept | 7.30pm | £10.00 i No need to hop on a plane! No need to book a hotel! And no need to spend a fortune on theatre tickets as Building Bridges Community Arts Theatre brings the magical, musical moments from Broadway to you this September! Sample thirty different songs from thirty different musicals in one evening and you’ll be ‘defying gravity’ with the witches of ‘Wicked’, singing ‘a little ditty in the city’ from ‘Oliver!’ and sampling ‘a spoonful of sugar’ with our very own Mary Poppins. Our talented singers and dancers are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and perhaps a tear to your cheek as we explore the emotional roller coaster that is musical theatre and we hope you’ll come along for the ride! Presented by one of Northern Ireland’s leading amateur theatre groups.

Regarded as one of Ireland’s finest guitarists, Dónal is the son of the world-renowned singer Liam Clancy of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Since the death of his father, he has focused his attention on the family repertoire of songs that he grew up with, while keeping the Clancy tradition alive with his solo performances. This event takes place in our Studio Theatre with an unreserved, tiered seating layout.

8 SIMPLE FAITH PRESENTS

A STEP BACK IN TIME Fri 14 Sept | 8.00pm | £12.00 | £9.00 [conc] i Simple Faith and their live band will take you on a musical journey as they Step Back In Time to bring you a night of all the good old gospel hymns and songs that have blessed, encouraged and uplifted generations. A truly memorable night is in store for you, with songs such as, ‘It Is Well’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘The King Is Coming’, ‘Power In The Blood’, ‘I’ll Fly Away’, ‘One Day At A Time’, ‘When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder’ and many more classics.

THE WHISTLING GIRL Fri 14 Sept | 8.00pm | £13.00 | £11.00 [conc] The acclaimed Irish duo of singer and actress Honor Heffernan, and composer and keyboard player Trevor Knight [Auto Da Fe], present their new cabaret | speakeasy-style show, ‘The Whistling Girl’. The original and unique music composed by Trevor transforms the poems of Dorothy Parker into songs, using her witty, droll and sometimes heart-rending lyrics. With a line-up of highly renowned Irish musicians, the atmosphere for a spellbinding evening of music with a theatrical element is brought to life with Garvan Gallagher bass, Tom Jamieson drums and Ed Deane electric guitar.

They have recently performed two sell out shows at Irish Arts Centre in New York. Each of the songs creates individual tableaux or dream moments from Parker’s psyche, conjuring up images from her tempestuous life of outrageous celebrity, as founding member of the notorious Algonquin set in New York, and as civil rights activist in America and Spain during the Spanish Civil War. This event takes place in our Studio Theatre with an unreserved, tiered seating layout.

A MATTER OF GRAVE CONCERN

THREE’S A SHROUD

Word spreads like the fever that killed her, that Margorie McCall is dead. However, one man’s grief is another’s opportunity and the local grave-robbing fraternity seize their moment. And the presence of a wedding ring on the deceased lady’s finger adds to the attraction and the potential earnings. But the extent of Margorie’s illness has been grossly misdiagnosed by the dubiously qualified Doctor McCann. Even so, Margorie’s reawakening during the exhumation still comes as something of a surprise. Follow the hilarious events in the days immediately after this 300 year old legend of Lurgan folklore as friendships fall asunder, reputations are shattered, and Margorie discovers a tonic that has survived far beyond 1705. Presented by one of Northern Ireland’s leading amateur theatre groups WINNER OF ADJUDICATOR’S AWARD, LISLEA DRAMA FESTIVAL 2018.

For generations, Catholic undertakers in Belfast have buried Catholics and Protestant undertakers have buried Protestants. So you’d think now that we have peace [mostly], we could stick to these rules? But no. When veteran undertaker, Gerry McSorely, finds his Catholic customers being stolen by young Protestant rival, Basil Gray, an undertaking war breaks out. It gets worse when young Polish woman, Irena Bukowski’s cut-price, new-age, interdenominational funeral home usurps them both.

Joined by a host of outrageous characters including the hilarious cleaner Mrs Johnston, paramilitary leader Graham Stitt, and Simon the struggling undertaking apprentice.

A MYSTIC DREAM OF 4 A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM ROWAN HAMILTON Tues 16 Oct | 8.00pm £10.00 | £8.00 R William Rowan Hamilton was born in Dublin in 1805. He became the foremost mathematician of his day, a brilliant mind informed by a passionate nature, as well as by ‘a taste for verse’. His lifelong feelings for his first love Catherine Disney, despite their separate marriages, were just within the bounds of Victorian respectability and occasioned attempts at self-harm on either side. He was a close friend of Wordsworth, to whom he sent his poems. Hamilton’s contribution to 21st century technology has been immense, finding application in areas as diverse as the Internet, mobile devices and space travel. He had strong connections with Armagh, largely centred on The Observatory. This staged reading is timed for the 175th anniversary of Hamilton’s discovery of quaternion algebra on the 16th of October 1843. Author of ‘A Mystic Dream of 4’ Iggy McGovern, Poet and Physicist, will be joined onstage by actors from Bardic Theatre & Armagh Theatre Group. This event takes place in our Studio Theatre with an unreserved, tiered seating layout.

MYRA’S STORY

Wed 24 - Thurs 25 Oct | 8.00pm | £14.50 | £12.00 [conc] R As she re-creates her life story, playing all the characters and acting out all the events that have led her to this pitiful existence, we see working class Dublin life and death at its funniest, rawest and cruellest. We get to meet an assortment of amazing characters who have coloured Myra’s life, including habitual scrounger Tina the Tap, heavy smoker Big Bridie and her husband Jimmy the Tadpole, innocent little Norris the Gnome, and cross-eyed Matilda and her partner, Dublin’s hairiest man, Christy.

Myra McLaughlin is a homeless Dublin street drinker. Foul-mouthed and feisty, she is also funny and self-deprecating. It’s a bitterly cold, December morning. Desperate for her first drink of the day, she begs from, insults, even dances for the passing throngs on Grafton Street.

Myra’s Story is packed full of energy, humour and drama. We all know a Myra McLaughlin. She is our sister, our brother, our parent, our friend. She is us... there but for the grace of God. You’ll split your sides laughing with Myra. You’ll break your heart crying with Myra. What you’ll never do... is forget her. Already an award winner in Canada and New York. Hailed as ‘magnificent’ and ‘unmissable’ by the critics. ‘Myra’s Story’ is a theatrical triumph.

FRANK PIG SAYS HELLO Fri 26 Oct | 8.00pm | £13.50 | £11.50 [conc] R Twenty-five years from its first groundbreaking tour, Pat McCabe’s ‘Frank Pig Says Hello’ returns in a new production that brilliantly captures the legendary original. Desperately funny and yet deeply tragic, ‘Frank Pig Says Hello’ is one of the great classics of modern Irish theatre. It tells the story of Francie Brady growing up in a small Irish town in the 1960s and his descent towards a brutal act that shocks his community. The play distils Francie’s infamous narrative into a riveting evening of pure, outstanding theatre, and is regarded as the most vivid, hilarious and heartbreaking evocations ever seen on stage of an Irish childhood gone wrong. From the opening live trumpet notes over an image of a happy boy acting the piglet, to the breathtaking depiction of a dreadful murder, this is theatre at its most entertaining and gripping best. Elements of Native and African American traditional music made their way into Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, ‘From The New World’ - despite the fact that, for us, it’s most widely recognised as the soundtrack to that most quintessentially English advert for Hovis! Bernstein, on the other hand, believed that American music should be eclectic - as you would expect from a composer who wrote jazz for the concert hall and symphonic music for Broadway. His Serenade conveys a range of moods and is said to be a portrait of the composer himself. Join world-renowned star violinist Baiba Skride and the Ulster Orchestra for a magical and memorable evening!

The Assembly Of Poetry With Peter Fallon

Page To Stage - Playwriting With Brenda Winter-Palmer

‘Page to Stage’ is aimed at those keen to progress their playwriting skills. It takes as its starting point that participants already understand the basic principles of conflict, characterisation and plotting. It will focus on some of the practical techniques of theatre-making, which will enable prospective and emerging playwrights to use the magic of the stage to tell their story in an imaginative and inventive way. Brenda Winter has been a professional actress, director, and writer for 39 years, founding Charabanc Theatre Company and Replay Theatre Company.

THE TRIAL OF JAMES CRAIG BEFORE THE COURT OF HISTORY Wed 7 Nov | 8.00pm £12.00 | £10.00 [conc] i Anthony Russell’s imaginative play examines the role played by the Orange Order in the development of Ireland and Ulster over the last 400 years. Following on from last year’s ‘The Trial of Padraig Pearse’, this new play is a wellresearched, politically balanced consideration of the major historical issues and events that have been a source of political and social conflict in Ireland. In the ‘Court of History’, James Craig, Lord Craigavon, ‘a man hewn from the rocks of Ulster’, represents the Orange Order. Sir Edward Carson, the Irish Unionist leader defends him. The prosecutor is John Mitchel, an unrepentant, physical force Irish Republican.

As a witness, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, Irish Rebel and Canadian Patriot tells of the Orange Order’s controversial, but ultimately positive, role in the creation of the Canadian Confederation. Mrs Elizabeth Crozier, a Presbyterian farmer’s wife, relives the horror of the Altnaveigh massacre. All of the shades are aware of what has happened in Ireland since they entered the grave and comment accordingly. As with the ‘Trial of P. H. Pearse’ the audience|jury is asked to leave its prejudices at the door, to debate the issues as presented and to reach a verdict - guilty or not guilty. ABANDONED; NOT FORGOTTEN? A MULTIDISCIPLINARY INSTALLATION BY VISUAL ARTIST LISE MCGREEVY, ARTIST AND COMPOSER MARIE THERESE DAVIS, POET JIM JOHNSTON, AND FILM MAKER PAUL WHITTAKER Fri 7 Sept - Sat 27 Oct | Gallery Striping away the political agenda, the remit for all four artists for this installation was to promote and embrace both factions of our society, culturally and equally, to create an original body of work, which they best felt answered the question: The culture, heritage and language of our joint Irish and Ulster Scots history - is it abandoned; forgotten? The reply by all four was a resounding no.

ON THE EDGE OF GREEN FRANCES O’REILLY Fri 7 Sept - Sat 10 Nov | Foyer Walls Abstract in approach, O’Reilly’s work is informed by place and its potential to arrest the senses. Places linked to her work include Glasgow and Cornwall with her current work connected to the rural landscape where its boundaries, enclosures and filmic vistas have the continuous ability to visually excite and resonate in an elemental way. Working in acrylic, the paintings are produced by a controlled interplay between colour and shape while cultivating the possibility of surprise. Often aerial in perspective, they range from small-scale pieces to miniscule landscape fragments. O’Reilly’s paintings become a way of sustaining the residual effect of place and its effect on the psyche.

EMERGENCE CATHERINE KEOGH Fri 9 Nov - Sat 5 Jan 2019 | Gallery Emergence is Keogh’s first solo exhibition in the city of her birth. This body of new work connects to her earlier ‘Tree of Life’ series where she mused on the connection between the humble tree and personal growth. The colourful swirl replaces conventional roots, a metaphor for her choice to uproot and spend much of her life away from Armagh. Keogh’s work is about finding new ways of growing despite being cut off from familiar soil.

‘ULTIMATELY MY ART IS ONE OF THE WAYS I SUSTAIN MY ‘PERSONAL TREE’ BECAUSE TO DENY MY ART IS TO DENY MYSELF SUSTENANCE. THIS EXHIBITION IS ABOUT OUR COMMON STRUGGLE TO EMERGE AND GROW!’
