Black History Month February 2022 Black Health and Wellness
Health and wellness is a basic human right, a right many people of color have been denied throughout history to the present day. Systemic racism has negatively impacted communities of color, ranging from a lack of basic information, equal access to health care, and overall well-being.
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day- February 7, 2022
The first National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) was marked in 1999 as a grassroots-education effort to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS prevention, care, and treatment in communities of color. Let’s celebrate the progress in reducing new HIV diagnoses among Black people while recognizing that to #StopHIVTogether, we must address barriers like racism, homophobia, & transphobia. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is part of a major offensive against HIV/AIDS spreading in the African American community.
Increased education efforts and a continued push for testing and treatment options, there are approximately 471,500 African Americans living with HIV, according to the CDC. However, the number of newly infected people is declining or leveling off. After 18 years of persistent grassroots efforts to forge partnerships in funding research, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day still matters because it keeps the conversation going not only in the black community, but in all communities. Every winter on Galveston Island, this beloved culinary tradition features discounted prix fixe menus from dozens of Galveston’s best restaurants, and is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Participating in Galveston Restaurant Week is easy! No tickets or passes are required! Food lovers may simply dine out at as many participating restaurants as they like during Galveston Restaurant Week. Two and/or 3-course dinners will be priced between $20-$45; and 2-course lunches, breakfasts, & brunches will cost between $10-$20. Dine Out for Charity New this year, restaurants will also be collecting charitable donations to be distributed to local community groups. The donation amount varies by participating restaurants between $1 and $5 and will be added to each Restaurant Week menu item. The focus of the chosen charities is feeding, supporting, and the health of the children and families of our community. This year’s charities are Galveston Urban Ministries, Access Care of Coastal Texas, and St. Vincent’s House.

Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, offers the unique chance to experience sand between your toes and gorgeous beach sunsets while taking in the revelry and lavish parades known to dominate Galveston Island during carnival season. The island’s 111th Mardi Gras celebration, to be held February 18 – March 1, 2022, is expected to draw more than 350,000 attendees for live concerts, parades, balcony parties, several elegant balls and some new festive additions. And, this island-style Mardi Gras has plenty of personality. From the classic revelry found in the heart of Galveston’s historic downtown district, where the bulk of festivities take place, to electronic dance parties and family friendly events and parades, Mardi Gras! Galveston offers excitement everyone can enjoy.

FRIENDS FEEDING FRIENDS CLIENT LUNCH PROGRAM We are looking for new friends to help us serve nutritious meals every Thursday. We currently serve on average 30-40 clients and their family members. Planning and the help from our community partners make it possible for us to offer a healthy balanced meal. We find casseroles are usually the easiest and can provide a well-rounded lunch. Anyone wishing to prepare & serve a meal or financially support a lunch with a $100.00 donation please email us at give@accttexas.org
