In het begin vond ik het gênant om brutaalweg voor een huis te gaan staan om foto’s te maken. Maar alles went. Als ik ging aanbellen om hun toestemming te vragen, stelden de brievenbuseigenaars geen vragen, ze vroegen geen uitleg. Het leek ze onverschillig te laten, ook al waren sommige brievenbussen kitscherige kunststukjes of artisanale doe-het-zelfbouwsels, die duidelijk de stempel van de eigenaar droegen.

Voor elke brievenbus ben ik op zoek gegaan naar een passende, unieke achtergrond. Hiervoor ging ik nog een tweede keer op pad, deze keer dus met een totaal ander doel dan tijdens mijn brievenbussenmissie.

Zo goed als alle foto’s van brievenbussen zijn ge­ monteerd op een fictieve achtergrond, omdat de reële achtergrond veelal rommelig of oninteressant was.

Ik heb de beelden bewust niet perfect gemonteerd, wel integendeel. Montage op zijn Belgisch zeg maar, nonchalant en surrealistisch, een beetje zoals het land zelf.

More than 30 years ago, I married a Belgian woman, moving from the Netherlands to Belgium in the process. Foreigners who visit Belgium for a short or longer period of time always are quick to point out the country’s rather chaotic and surreal architecture, in particular the typically Belgian houses, gates, fences and gardens. Everyone does their own thing, without taking into account the landscape structure or architectural planning. Belgium consequently is a very photo-worthy country, worth keeping your camera close at hand for. About six years ago, I took a photo of a house built in the ’60s. Its style was old-fashioned and robust.

No plastic window frames, no aluminium garage door.

As I was looking at the photo on my computer that same evening, I suddenly noticed the rather unusual post-mounted letterbox. It consisted of a large, brightlycoloured eagle, perched on a concrete house. I had found my subject.

I’ve spent many long days travelling around the country, often stopping in the tiniest hamlets, to spot and photograph people’s letterboxes.

Initially I was rather embarrassed to go stand in front of a house and take pictures.

But you soon get used to it. When I did ring people’s bells to request their consent, the letterbox owners never asked any questions or explanations. They seemed largely indifferent, in spite of the (sometimes kitschy) artwork or artisan DIY structures which clearly wore the signature of theirs owners.

I also decided to find a suitable, unique background for every letterbox.

This required me to go on a second tour, albeit with a completely different mission.

Almost all photos of letterboxes have been superimposed over a fictional background, because the actual background was often messy or boring.

I purposefully did not set out to create perfect montages. On the contrary even.

I went for a more Belgian style, that is laidback and surrealistic, a little like my adopted country in fact.
