Mich interessiert, was in der Wartezeit passiert.

People wait, repeatedly, often involuntarily, everywhere in the world. Yesterday – today - tomorrow. How do people wait? Are there differences?

PREFACE

On their own or in a group? In Europe or in Asia? On the Equator or in New Zealand? In Argentina or Kyrgyzstan? In the country or in the city? In capitalism or in socialism? In the past or present?

DIETER LEISTNER

The aim of waiting people is to arrive more quickly. I am interested in what happens during the time spent waiting. Is it wasted time? Or extra time, a gift? What is the mood of the people waiting? Are they calm or perhaps annoyed? Do they enjoy the time or rather see it as an irritation? What relationships exist between the people waiting? Do they talk to one another or avoid contact? Do technical developments play a role in waiting? Since 1978 I have watched and photographed people waiting at public transport stops. Previously in gray tones – today the images are digital and color. The photo concept has remained the same since the beginning. You can see my observations in this book. 5

· A panopticon of waiting people throughout the world · Transport stops from Europe to New Zealand

Since 1978, Dieter Leistner has been photographing people waiting at public transport stops throughout the world. Whether in Asia or Europe, South America or the Indian Ocean, in the countryside or in town, in capitalist or socialist societies—Leistner captures those waiting with subtlety and with a professional perspective. He opens up a world of instantaneous shots with their own partic ular aura: sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholic, sometimes bustling, sometimes lonesome. The observer is always part of the composition, recognising themselves among those waiting.
