n 1965, photographer Jerry Schatzberg, already well established through his work with magazines, met a young Bob Dylan who was on the cusp of fame. Dylan invited the photographer to the studio where he was recording the album that would become ‘Highway 61 Revisited’. The album included the song Like a Rolling Stone, which would go on to be ranked #1 on Rolling Stone’s 500

Greatest Songs of All Time. Schatzberg’s photographs of Dylan captured the (now) Nobel laureate during one of the most pivotal creative moments in music history. They include the shoot for what would arguably become Dylan’s greatest album, ‘Blonde on Blonde’. ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ‘The Summer of Love’

n 1967, a photojournalist named Baron Wolman met Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason at a music conference. Wenner and Gleason told Wolman about a new publication they were starting. It would be about contemporary music and the musicians who made it. That magazine, Rolling Stone, would go on to become one of the most iconic magazines ever published and Baron Wolman was the first chief photographer. Happy Daze: The Summers of Love celebrates Baron Wolman’s archive of photographs from three incredible years in cultural history. From festivals such as Woodstock and Altamont, musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead, and moments including the Human Be-In and Death of Hippie march; Wolman was on the visual front lines of an important period in the history of American society.

H

e was a young man with a distinctive voice. He had a throat that knew its way around whisky and cigarettes. He could write poetry and prose that rivalled any poet. When Tom Waits took to the recording studio to sing his lyrics and play his songs, a new icon in American music was born. Few artists match their image with what they create. But to listen to Tom Waits, especially in his groundbreaking debut ‘Closing Time’, the images that were presented to the press and used on the album cover would do just that. The photos matched the artist. Ed Caraeff, a noted photographer who also captured Jimi Hendrix on stage at Monterey, was enlisted by the record label to work with this new artist in 1972 for publicity shots as well as the cover image for his debut. Caraeff would work with Waits and produce a series of iconic images - many never published before. In Tom Waits, all of Ed Caraeff’s images are reproduced, along with notes and commentary from Caraeff and an introduction by Barney Hoskyns. Hoskyns is a celebrated journalist, music critic and the editorial director of Rock’s Backpages. He is the author of several books, including Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits (Faber and Faber, 2008), which won critical praise. ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

Wake Up! To the World of Bernard Rhodes Bernard Rhodes, Edited by Kiersten Armstrong, Mike Warlow

F

rom the growth of punk and beyond, this visually rich collection of art, fashion and ephemera, accompanied by essays, draws from the archives and philosophy of one of the ‘prime instigators’ of UK punk - Bernard Rhodes. Wake Up! To the World of Bernard Rhodes is a first-hand account of the punk movement. Bernard Rhodes shares his title of ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

‘prime instigator of UK punk’ with Malcom McLaren. Been there, seen it, done it hardly does Rhodes’ story justice. Inspired by the avant-garde Situationist movement, and the designer of radical t-shirts for McLaren and the Vivienne Westwood Kings Road shop, it was Rhodes who introduced John Lydon to the Sex Pistols before engineering the formation of the Clash. With him as their manager, and the co-creator of their super-committed style, the Clash became and remains one of the biggest bands of the era, and a symbol of punk as a positive force. Alongside his two stints with them, Rhodes also nurtured the Specials and Dexy’s Midnight Runners to huge success.

F

our men took the stage for the very first time. Their first gig was in a basement below a record shop, but at the peak of their success, they played to over 50,000. An early manager commented that the band would go down like ‘a lead balloon’. The ‘a’ was dropped and ‘zeppelin’ substituted, and out of an insult, Led Zeppelin was born. Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Robert Plant were all experienced and respected musicians in their own right. When they formed a band, they transformed the way we listen to rock. But it wasn’t just their music that would shake the world. Their performances left millions with the memories of a lifetime. In partnership with ACC Editions, Iconic Images has created a book that celebrates the live performances that defined a generation. Photographers, including the world-famous Terry O’Neill, Michael Brennan and Baron Wolman, have opened up their archives to present Led Zeppelin: Live. hotographs taken in Japan between the late Edo period and early Meiji periods found their way overseas, and played a major role in forming Westerners’ image of Japan. Among these collections, the pictures gathered by the Swiss diplomat Aimé Humbert (1819–1900) in the 1860s were crucial in building lasting representations of the island nation: many of these, mainly collected in 1863/64 during a sojourn in Yokohama and Edo, were used as sources for the well-known and largely distributed engravings of his famous book Le Japon illustré, published in Paris in 1870. Belonging to the collection of the MEN, these beautiful and well-preserved photographs are published here for the first time. Presented by Japanese and Swiss scholars before the narrative backdrop of their acquisition and application by foreigners, they offer a striking view of a lost world.

n This

is the first book that offers a broad cultural and geographical typology of shelter spaces in Israel

F

rom its foundation in 1948, the state of Israel has felt isolated and under threat from enemies. This collective siege mentality manifests itself with over 1 million public and private shelters. The Israelis have integrated these ‘Doomsday spaces’ into their everyday life and ‘transformed’ them into spaces that look like normal dance studios, bars or temples. For many people in Israel who live with a personal history of exile and persecution, these shelters are the architecture of an existential threat – both real and perceived. Adam Reynolds shot the images in this book over the course of three years, from 2013 to 2015. The photographs offer a broad cultural and geographical typology of the shelter spaces by documenting them on either side of the Green Line, throughout Israel and the Occupied Territories, in an effort to offer the broadest survey possible. They straddle the distinct worlds of fine art and reportage.

n The

photographer approaches the interiors with a careful and patient eye to the aesthetic composition of the space, in the historical tradition of architectural photography, with the goal to offer the viewer the empty space for personal reflection and contemplation

“Working in a country like Israel, it is difficult, if not impossible, to separate art from social reality,” says Adam Reynolds.

A

rt as Jewellery is a visually stunning introduction to jewellery made by the titans of twentieth and twenty-first century art. From Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, through to Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, the great figures of modern art have all turned both thought and talent to jewellery. As is fitting for a book that covers a range of artists, every image is as striking as it is unique. By using contemporary pictures, Art as Jewellery develops a chronological timeline of jewellery presentation. Its pages are home to a stunning variety of design sketches and photographs. Some were shot by renowned 20th century photographers, such as Ugo Mulas and Antonia Mulas, while others have been buried in archives for decades, unseen since the ‘60s. In contrast, modern works have been given model treatment by top photographer Alexander English, making this book a glamorous blend of new and classic jewellery art. Author Louisa Guinness, collector and gallery owner, provides insightful commentary on each artist and their work.

D

id you know that jewellery predates clothes? The oldest known piece is a set of 100,000-year-old beads, made from Nassarius shells. Liza Urla advises us not to look at the eyes when meeting a new person, but instead to look at their jewellery. She describes it as the ultimate means of self-expression, essential to our identification as humans. “Jewellery is our armour,” she says, “and precious stones our amulets”. In this book, she journeys from continent to continent, chronicling the pieces that capture her imagination and her heart. Although many of the pictures are from the street, defining the wearer’s style on the day they were taken, Urla has been lucky enough to access people’s personal jewellery boxes. As she says, the best pieces are always in private collections. Urla’s favourite finds are presented alongside her own jewellery styling, in collaboration with various designers from the jungles of Brazil, the beaches of Mexico, or the streets of London, NYC, Paris or Moscow.

raditional Indian Jewellery - The Golden Smile of India is a vast and detailed publication covering the rich heritage of Indian jewellery and its significance in past and present Indian society. Jewellery plays an important part in the everyday lives, important moments, festivals and religious aspects of Indian culture. The book excels in its detailed descriptions, which accompany the sumptuous array of images. We discover why enamel is used in the north of India, the origin and significance of gold, the significance of setting gems in a certain ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

order, and jewellery’s spiritual importance. The book covers in detail the meaning of the use of flowers and birds in Hindu influenced jewellery, looking through the eyes of 17th century European travellers who visited the rich Mogul courts. This publication is the result of 35 years of research - travelling, studying, and talking to many people across the entire subcontinent of India, as well as having had unprecedented access to goldsmiths and enamellers; being shown techniques known only to one family, which have been transferred from generation to generation; and being granted access to beautiful and never-before-seen Royal collections.

jewel is more than an arrangement of precious stones – it is a story. This is the principle on which Vincent Meylan has written his latest book. Now, with unparalleled access to the Bulgari archives, Meylan guides us on an intimate journey through the lives of the clients who have given this pre-eminent Mediterranean jeweller their patronage. Their client roster reflects their prestige. Nobility and celebrity intermingle; the Countess di Frasso shopped at Bulgari with her Hollywood superstar-beau, Gary Cooper, as did the Infanta Beatriz of Spain and Princess Maria José of Belgium, while Richard Burton wooed Elizabeth Taylor with glittering Bulgari jewels. But these jewels tell tales of many genres, not just romance: from exiled Iranian Shahs to Count Cini of Monselice, held for ransom by the SS and released in exchange for Bulgari jewels. Each story is retold with Vincent Meylan’s characteristic verve, embellished with original pictures from the archives. Chapters are dedicated to wealthy customers, and also to the stones themselves, tracing the evolution of this iconic Roman company through history, and the development of their jewellery from mine, to workshop, to model.

rtisans of Israel is a very special book on crafts. Author Lynn Holstein is in search of a national identity in the artisanry of the still young country – and she finds it in the unifying pursuit for innovation. Through a rich palette of themes, works, reports and concepts from current art practices, they illuminate the conditions and interconnections of education, making, presentation, marketing and networking in design and art using the example of the New Zealand Handshake project. Handshake is a unique mentoring programme in the art world, in which established artists spread their knowledge to less experienced protégés. The knowledge accumulated in this exchange, of a relationship based on feedback, is realised in exhibitions and joint projects.

uring his reign, King Charles I (1600– 1649) assembled one of Europe’s most extraordinary art collections. Indeed, by the time of his death, it contained some 2,000 paintings and sculptures. Charles I: King and Collector explores the origins of the collection, the way it was assembled and what it came to represent. Authoritative essays provide a revealing historical context for the formation of the King’s taste. They analyse key areas of the collection, such as the Italian Renaissance, and how the paintings that Charles collected influenced the contemporary artists he commissioned. Following Charles’s execution, his collection was sold. This book, edited by the curators of a spectacular exhibition at the Royal Academy, reunites its most important works in sumptuous detail. Featuring paintings by such masters as Van Dyck, Rubens and Raphael, this striking publication offers a unique insight into this fabled collection.

ach year between 1819 and 1825, John Constable submitted a monumental canvas to the Royal Academy of Arts in London for display in the Annual Exhibition. These so-called ‘six-footers’ vividly captured the life of the River Stour in Suffolk, where Constable grew up and where he returned to paint each year. The Leaping Horse, the last of these, now a major work in the Academy’s collection, is the subject of this fascinating new book, the latest in the Royal Academy’s studies of its masterworks.

The art historian Richard Humphreys explores Constable’s often avant-garde working methods, as well as his struggle to gain full acceptance within the art establishment of the early nineteenth century. With reproductions of the artist’s full-scale preliminary sketches as well as brand-new photography of the painting itself, this book is the ideal companion for art lovers who seek a deeper appreciation of Constable’s iconic depictions of the English countryside.

inally, a book that debunks the popular myth that William Wordsworth was, first and foremost, a poet of daffodils. Wordsworth’s Gardens and Flowers: The Spirit of Paradise, provides a vivid account of Wordsworth as a gardening poet who not only wrote about gardens and flowers but also designed – and physically worked in – his gardens. Wordsworth’s Gardens and Flowers: The Spirit of Paradise is a book of two halves. The first section focuses on the gardens that Wordsworth made at Grasmere and Rydal in the English Lake District, and also in Leicestershire, at Coleorton. The gardens are explored via his poetry and prose and the journals of his sister, Dorothy Wordsworth. In the second half of the book, the reader learns more of Wordsworth’s use of flowers in his poetry. Throughout, the engaging text is woven around illustrations that bring Wordsworth’s gardens and flowers to life, including rare botanical prints, many reproduced here for the first time in several decades. mil Nolde (1867-1956) was one of the greatest colourists of the twentieth century. An artist passionate about his north German home near the Danish border, with its immense skies, flat, windswept landscapes and storm-tossed seas, he was equally fascinated by the demi-monde of Berlin’s cafés and cabarets, the busy to and fro of tugboats in the port of Hamburg and the myriad of peoples and places he saw on his trip to the South Seas in 1914. Nolde felt strongly about what he painted, identifying with his subjects in every brushstroke he ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

made, heightening his colours and simplifying his shapes, so that we, the viewers, can also experience his emotional response to the world about him. This book features five essays and over 100 illustrations drawn from the incomparable collection of the Emil Nolde Foundation in Seebüll (the artist’s former home in north Germany). It covers Nolde’s complete career, from his early atmospheric paintings of his homeland right through to the intensely coloured, so-called ‘unpainted paintings’, works done on small pieces of paper during the Third Reich when Nolde was branded ‘degenerate’ and forbidden to work as an artist.

A

s some American artists began to eliminate people and remove extraneous details from their compositions, they often employed neat, orderly brushwork or closeup, unemotional photography. Artists as diverse as Patrick Henry Bruce, John Covert, Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Strand and Arthur Dove navigated European and American avant-garde circles, picking and choosing new ideas and methods. Inspiration ranged from cubism and machine parts to new technologies, and they found ways to bring order to the modern world through extreme simplification. For them, abstraction involved absence and presence - the evacuation of human beings but also the desire to depict something that would not otherwise be visible or to render visible unseen natural processes like the passage of time, sound waves, or weather patterns. Their artworks provide a new context for the precisionist works in the subsequent sections and point to modern ideas about what art could be. How does a crisp painting technique relate to an aesthetic of absence?

n summer 2015, performance artist Marina Abramovic and psychoanalyst Jeannette Fischer spent four days together at Abramovic’s house in the Hudson Valley. Associating freely, they explored – from a psychoanalytical perspective – Abramovic’s biography and art and what relates them. A better understanding of herself, her personality and her work, was Abramovic’s objective. She claims that conversations with artists abound, with one curator saying this and another saying that. Yet there is no book in which psychoanalysis puts her life and artistic work in context. This new book aims to fill this gap. Yet it is not a therapist’s report, nor a record of Fischer’s analysis of Abramovic. It records the dialogue between artist and analyst attempting an interpretation of Abramovic’s extraordinary, violent performances that sometimes reach the brink of faint, even death. The book is arranged in a sequence of dialogues, separated by Fischer’s comments on and images of four of Abramovic’s performances to which the psychoanalyst refers.

It challenges the accepted view of the dominance of the Scottish Colourists and uncovers the hitherto little-known progressive Scottish art world. Through these works, we can see the commitment of Scottish artists to the progress of art through their engagement and interpretation of the great movements of European modern art, from Fauvism and Expressionism, to Cubism, Art Deco, abstraction and Surrealism, among others. Looking at the most advanced work of high-profile artists such as William Gillies and Stanley Cursiter, and lesser-known talents, like Tom Pow and Edwin G. rom Michelangelo’s marbles to photographers’ self-portraits, artists have always been fascinated by their creative encounters with the human body. Often a key part of their early training, drawing and sculpting from life go on to inform their later work in unexpected and inspiring ways. This illuminating publication brings together interviews with over 19 artists from all disciplines, including painters, sculptors and conceptual artists, working in a variety of different media. Through in-depth conversations with them, the authors explore ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

An introductory essay provides the historical context for a practice deeply rooted in artistic tradition. Generously illustrated with reproductions of the artists’ work and photography of their working methods, this book overturns all our prior assumptions about working from life.

uscan cooking lives in the region’s homes and gardens, its small shops and market stalls. With From the Markets of Tuscany: A Cookbook, at once a collection of traditional, seasonal recipes and a guide to the area’s top food markets, Giulia takes readers on a journey through her beloved Tuscany, exploring famous places but also more remote areas - from Florence’s urban streets and enchanting Volterra to mountainous Garfagnana and the wilds of Lunigiana, the gentle rolling hills of Val d’Orcia, and the vineyards and olive groves of Chianti. Through photographs, words and recipes, Giulia tells the story of Florence’s historic markets, local organic farmers’ markets, and the weekly market days held in Tuscan towns and villages. She also explores Tuscany’s coastal fish and seafood markets, together with the roadside vendors of the Maremma area, with their vibrant fresh fruit and vegetable stands. With each encounter, Giulia delves into the stories of Tuscany’s food markets, drawing on memories and recipes that taste of home.

ver forty projects showcase the immense variety among Japanese detached houses constructed over the past three years. Some of these houses are designed around the concept of ‘intermediate space’ featuring courtyards, landscapes, and tearooms. Others take ‘how to respond to the environment’ as the design theme, employing green building techniques and outdoor insulation, etc; while others are inspired by the question of ‘how to implement one’s lifestyle’, focusing on urban housing, family reconstitution, and variability. Readers will learn about the meaning and the story behind these designs through every project description, experiencing the conciseness that defines Japanese house design. In addition to this, Professor Zhao Xiang from Fukuoka University discusses various reasons for this diversity. His informative description of architecture and design theory will help the reader understand the methods behind Japanese house creation. This book

also includes useful reference materials, which can be used as a basis for new houses in the Japanese style.

hird wave coffee shops dominate the mainstream, as the fourth wave, heavily reliant on e-commerce, is still being defined. The reason that physical stores do not become retail déjà vu attributes largely to consumers’ notion that coffee shops are not only a place to savour a hot beverage, but a space to socialise and bond. Café Plus is a chic book-of-the-moment that collects coffee shop interiors by excellent designers from around the world. The projects featured in this book serve more than coffee; they are multi-functional venues that interpret the global concept of a ‘café’ to suit their needs. Interspersed with illustrations and detailed descriptions of design concepts, the featured projects are all from the past three years, showcasing the latest trends in interior café design. This beautifully packaged book will appeal to coffee shop owners, architects, interior designers, and photographers.

Surf & Stay Veerle Helsen

L

ifestyle journalist Veerle Helsen went ‘out-of-office’ for six months, bought an old camper and travelled by herself along the Spanish and Portuguese coastline. Ever true to her motto ‘surf, see, sleep & eat’, she combines three of her passions in this book: surfing, travelling and discovering hidden gems. How about a heavenly holiday mansion where there’s a tree growing through the roof? Or an architectural public swimming pool that’s hidden between rocks and the sea? She searched and found camper spots so quiet she could stay there for days without seeing another soul, secret beaches that aren’t indicated on the map, where one can sit back and watch the waves. Veerle Helsen dismisses the classic tourist image of Spain and Portugal and writes about a completely different world: untouched, fierce and free, with little beach bars serving the very fish they caught earlier that day, and roads wrapping themselves around cliffs and dunes, sheltered by pine trees and maintaining the view of sandcastles on the beach. While she drove, her drone was beside her on the passenger seat and her surfboard was on the roof. This guide transcends the clichés and avoids the classic tourist traps. ‘Sea’ you soon! fascinating insight into the stimulating universe of Belgium’s cult fashion designer duo A.F.Vandevorst. A universe of fetishes, fur, leather, sensual folds and tight straitjackets... That is what Belgian fashion designers A.F.Vandevorst stand for. This publication celebrates their twentieth anniversary. An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx met in 1987, on their first day of school at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Ten years later, they set up their company Blixa and presented their first collection as A.F.Vandevorst in Paris. They have collaborated with such people as the flamboyant and world-famous hat designer Stephen Jones and have grown to become one of Belgium’s most edgy cult designers, closely connected to the Antwerp Six (Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck ). With fashion shows and flagship stores in Paris, New York and London, they are much respected internationally and hugely admired in Japan. A.F.Vandevorst’s aesthetics are the result of their strong love for the visual arts, music and literature and of their great interest in cultural archetypes. This book focuses on their diverse inspirations, including Joseph

Beuys, the military and the medical scene, and is a collaboration with artists to whom An and Filip feel strongly connected. Among them is Blixa Bargeld (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds/Einstürzende Neubauten), who was the source of their first company’s name and has been a big inspiration ever since. Following an intuitive order, this book gives an intimate, very exciting and stimulating insight into the fascinating world of A.F.Vandevorst. ince the establishment of his studio, Ubik, in 1979, Philippe Starck has conceived more than 10,000 projects, and every single one of them has had the same principle: they must be at the disposal of the users. The object has to be “fair” and “to provide a service” – as functional as emotional. Starck embodies a democratic way of designing by asking himself: Why does this object deserve to be? He’s a committed creator that belongs

oss Lovegrove is an internationally renowned designer and visionary, whose works are celebrated as the new aesthetic expression of the 21st century. His industrial design is inspired by the logic and beauty of nature. It connects technology and innovative production methods with new materials and an intelligent, organic vocabulary of forms, in an inimitable way. By carefully selecting, combining, and composing these elements he succeeds in inventing a completely unique language of his own. His philosophy is rooted in elegant functionalism. Despite all of the imaginativeness and pleasure in experimentation revealed in his body of work, he considers himself a thinker whose interest is not in the pretentious, but in the development of sensible, useful things. At the heart of this monograph, therefore, is a lasting combination of high standards and creativity, design and nature, and the latest technologies from the fields of physics, biology, anthropology, and ecology.

New Houses and Old Houses Made New

Edited by Hannah Jenkins; Foreword by Maggie Toy

H

ouse design in Britain and Ireland is guided by climate, landscape and local resources just as much as the centuries-old traditions that have influenced architectural shape and form. Today’s best-known and emerging architects interpret their briefs with imaginative flair: they are transforming houses for the next generation of families by blending their renewed vigour for a local aesthetic with new materials and trends. Many of the new houses featured in British + Irish Modern reflect the architect’s focus on redefining local expectations for form by beautifully juxtaposing the traditional with contemporary structures, thus forging a new vernacular. Shown in stunning, full-colour photographic detail are hundreds of pages of new and renovated houses, cottages and even converted barns nestled in misty rural valleys, including new and retrofitted modern inner-city terraces and townhouses that make the best use of available space. British + Irish Modern reveals a rich array of works that showcase how architecture in Britain and Ireland today has much to teach the world about creative, high-calibre design, innovative application of materials, and cautious but clever reliance on resources. The World Atlas of Art Nouveau Architecture Edited by Ivan Bercedo and Jorge Mestre

rt nouveau architecture is a diverse subject, with a plethora of different names from across the globe. Defining a movement that consciously opposes tradition is difficult; art nouveau rejects categorisation with its relentless modernity. The buildings themselves are models of collaborative research. Artistic innovation collided with invention, as architects embraced new construction techniques, designing with iron, glass, pottery, and concrete. This over-sized book is the result of five years’ in-depth research. It contains a selection of key buildings from around the world, carefully curated by a panel of experts who bring specialist input from each continent. As a result, this book is the first collection of art nouveau architecture outside the boundaries of Europe. Each building is fully illustrated and accompanied by descriptive text. A general introduction provides historical and political context, while each country in the Atlas is introduced with a short but in-depth essay. S

OS Brutalism is a distress signal. Since the 1950s, eminent architects around the world have realised buildings expressing an uncompromising attitude. Predominantly, yet not exclusively, they used exposed concrete, or béton brut (hence the term ‘brutalism’), for their construction. In recent years, an initiative to protect and preserve this significant global heritage of 20th-century architecture has gained momentum, mainly through the Internet. Using the ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

hashtag #SOSBrutalism, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM, German Museum of Architecture) in Frankfurt on the Main and the Wüstenrot Foundation participate in this campaign, and have developed a vast collaborative research project. The result of this research to date is a global survey of brutalist architecture of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Some 100 contributors document around 120 key buildings from this period, including many previously unpublished discoveries that are in acute danger of loss through neglect or intended demolition. Moreover, the book features overviews of brutalism in architecture in twelve regions around the world. Case studies of hotspots such as the Macedonian capital Skopje or New Haven, Connecticut, and essays on the history and theory of brutalism round out this lavishly illustrated book. The paperback supplement collects papers from an international symposium on brutalism in architecture held in Berlin in 2012.

rchigram comprised Warren Chalk (1927–88), Peter Cook (1936–), Dennis Crompton (1935–), David Greene (1937–), Ron Herron (1930–94), and Michael Webb (1937–). Together, in the 1960s and early 1970s, they envisioned the future of architecture in ways that enthralled a generation. In an era defined by the space race, they developed a ‘high-tech’, lightweight, infra-structural approach that stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. They devised autonomous dwellings and focused on survival technology; they experimented with mega structures and modular construction systems; they explored mobility through the environment, and the use of portable living capsules: all through the medium of an incredible series of drawings and models. Archigram’s influence has been profound and enduring. They gave the Hightech movement its impetus; they inspired architects such as Renzo Piano and Norman Foster; and they laid the ground for the design of buildings such as the Pompidou Centre. This book catalogues Archigram’s activities over fourteen years, together with commentaries by the architects and critics writing then and now. Edited and designed by Archigram member Dennis Crompton, it has been 40 years in the making. ACC DISTRIBUTION SPRING 2018

This important study charts the history of the estate through its various owners, including the 3rd Earl of Burlington, who gave the house not only its name but also its distinctive and influential architecture. In his day, the house was host to leading scholars and celebrities, who met within Burlington’s cutting-edge creation, which remains an unparalleled examplar of the Palladian style in England.
