#TRADEFAIRDESIGN
Today’s brand experiences are more multifaceted than ever. Done well, they end up as snapshots in the social networks. Photos worthy of being posted on Instagram have thus meanwhile become an effective means of branding: if something is not “instagrammable” (“grammable” for short), it simply does not get any attention. As a result, more and more brand spaces are emerging that make use of precisely this media behaviour – and trade fairs are no exception …

Systems that apply the rules of attention economy do not always reward the most valuable or most relevant information, but rather the loudest, most extreme or most conspicuous – a mechanism which shapes our social networks every day. Attention has become the currency of our times and the spaces in which we move have above all become backdrops for perfectly staged “snapshots” that can be shared virtually with millions of people. Instagrammability has long become part of our communication policy, and contemporary hotels, shops and pop-up stores, and even museums, are optimising their “appearance” in order to skilfully blend into the “background”. Restaurants in particular have got this technique down to a fine art: from the furnishings via the lighting through to the presentation of the dishes, everything is designed to land on Instagram and to create the best possible stage for itself. The key to this success: well-versed designers who use tasteful ambience, stylish furniture, out-of-the-ordinary accessories and striking colour blocks to develop motifs that are subsequently ideally suited for posting. But what about the trade fair – the ultimate place of communication for centuries? Does this mean that the design of the trade fair stands has changed? Is the product no longer the centre of attention on the stand, but rather potential customers and their interaction with it? How important are live experiences in order to grab the attention of the visitors? How does this affect the communication strategy? And how does it affect spatial design and the design of the personal customer journey? These are the questions that we explore in the new Trade Fair Design Annual. With these questions in mind, we once again took a close look at the most up-to-date concepts in order to present to you the most exciting trade fair booths of the past year. So when you come across the Instagram logo, that means we thought the trade fair stand was particularly instagrammable – maybe you have already spotted some of them in the social networks. On top of that, we held an interview with Mike Meiré, designer, art director, artist and curator, who shared with us what he understands by instagrammability and how he would revolutionise the trade fair industry per se. On that note, we wish you lots of fun reading and exploring and of course posting: #lovetoread.

Hans Grohe shaped the family business with countless innovations. In 1953, for instance, he developed the first shower rail which revolutionised showering. 66 years later, the company from Schitach is as innovative as ever and for the ISH 2019 in Frankfurt, the Munich-based designers from 1zu33 gave the manufacturer of sanitary products a suitably impressive appearance. For the two brands hansgrohe and AXOR they placed two structures on the 1,700 square metres whose large-scale, urban architectural idiom each pursued its own design approach: While the creatives chose a white, partly backlit outer skin in light, warm hues for hansgrohe, underlining the brand claim of approachability, the luxurious AXOR brand was given a black façade interrupted by bands of light. What the two areas had in common was the use of high-quality materials as a reminiscence of the company‘s products. Graphics / Lighting / Media / Construction Messen und Ausstellungen
