Choreograaf en beeldend kunstenaar Toer van Schayk gooit haar van zich af en zet daarmee de schoonheid in beweging, acteur Hans Croiset heeft haar losjes over zijn linkerschouder gedrapeerd en kijkt vorsend in de lens, de Russische tweelingzusjes restauratrice Vera en kunsthistorica Warja Tolstoj zijn samen in beeld gebracht, een van hen heeft haar aan, terwijl Young Gyu Choi, 1e solist van het Nationale Ballet, de witte blouse als een voile over zijn hoofd en schouders laat hangen en zo oogt als een treurende Maria. De foto van de honderdjarige kinderpsychologe, Aimée barones van Hövell van Wezeveld en Westerflier, ongeveer van dezelfde leeftijd als de witte blouse die zij draagt, behoort tot de meest treffende portretten in de serie The White Blouse van fotografe Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier.

Dit laatste betoogt kunsthistoricus Titus M. Eliëns in zijn doorwrochte inleiding op het oeuvre van MarieJeanne: ‘Niet alleen omdat haar leeftijd en die van het kanten bloesje min of meer samenvallen, maar ook omdat het kledingstuk haar naadloos lijkt te passen. Inherent aan haar hoge leeftijd valt de berustende houding van de geportretteerde op die wordt versterkt door de fraai getekende rechterhand waarmee zij haar hoofd ondersteunt (…) Er is geen andere foto in deze reeks portretten waarin de fragiliteit van zowel het bloesje als van de geportretteerde zo scherp is vastgelegd.’

Choreographer and artist Toer van Schayk creates beauty in motion by tossing it away from himself; actor Hans Croiset drapes it casually over his left shoulder and gazes searchingly into the camera; Russian twins historic interior conservator Vera and art historian Warja Tolstoj are pictured together, with one of them wearing it; while Young Gyu Choi, 1st soloist with the Dutch National Ballet, veils his head and shoulders in the white blouse and looks like a grieving Madonna.

But among the most striking images in photographer Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier’s series The White Blouse is her portrait of child psychologist Aimée Baroness van Hövell van Wezeveld en Westerflier, a centenarian attired in a blouse as venerable as herself.

As art historian Titus M. Eliëns writes in his meticulous account of the photographer’s oeuvre, that portrait ‘stands out not only because of the close match between the age of the subject and that of the blouse she is wearing, but also because the garment seems to suit her so perfectly. The viewer is struck by the passivity of the subject – inherent to her great age – and the way the pose is underlined by the finely detailed right hand on which she rests her head. (…)

No other image in the series captures the fragility of both the blouse and the subject in quite so poignant a manner.’

De afgelopen acht jaar realiseerde Marie-Jeanne van Hövell een serie van 75 portretten van vrouwen en mannen, volwassenen en kinderen, bekenden en onbekenden, allen in of met de ruim honderd jaar oude kanten blouse die ooit toebehoorde aan de oudtante van de fotografe. De schoonheid van dit kwetsbare en gekoesterde familiestuk deed Marie-Jeanne besluiten haar letterlijk nieuw leven in te blazen.

Toen prof. dr. Titus M. Eliëns ons een jaar geleden attent maakte op de buitengewone portretreeks in wording van Marie-Jeanne van Hövell ontstond vrijwel direct het idee om een keuze uit de zogenoemde White Blouse portretten in Singer Laren te exposeren. De

Over the last eight years, Marie-Jeanne van Hövell has produced a series of 75 portraits – of adults and children of both sexes, well-known or otherwise – all dressed in or accompanied by the antique blouse, which once belonged to her great-aunt. The beauty and fragility of the cherished family heirloom inspired Marie-Jeanne to literally breathe new life into it.

A year ago, when Professor Titus M. Eliëns drew our attention to the extraordinary series of portraits that Marie-Jeanne van Hövell was producing, it occurred to us almost immediately that we should exhibit a selection of the ‘White Blouse portraits’ at Singer Laren. The authenticity, integrity, traditional

authenticiteit, integriteit, ambachtelijkheid – de fotografe gebruikt uitsluitend een analoge Hasselblad – en bovenal schoonheid maken het werk van Marie-Jeanne tot een feest voor het oog.

De kwetsbaarheid en vergankelijkheid van zowel blouse als de geportretteerde komen prachtig samen in de reeks zwart-witfoto’s, die Marie-Jeanne bij daglicht maakte binnen de intimiteit van haar eigen huis.

Net als de zeventiende-eeuwse portretschilders speelt Marie-Jeanne met het zonlicht, dat door een raam op de geportretteerde neervalt. De pure eenvoud en eerlijkheid van de foto’s van Marie-Jeanne zijn een verademing binnen de wereld van de ‘kunstfotografie’. Gelijk haar leermeester Koos Breukel beheerst zij de kunst om het wezen van de geportretteerde bloot te leggen.

craftsmanship – the photographer uses an analog Hasselblad camera for all the shots – and, above all, beauty of Marie-Jeanne’s work makes it a feast for the eyes.

The fragility and transience both of the blouse and of the people portrayed with it are wonderfully conveyed in the series of monochrome images produced by Marie-Jeanne, using only natural light, in the intimacy of her own home. Like some seventeenthcentury Dutch portrait painters, she plays with the light slanting down from a window onto her subject.

The purity, simplicity and honesty of her images come as a breath of fresh air in the ultra-sophisticated world of ‘fine art photography’. Her art, like that of her guru, Koos Breukel, is to reveal the inner self of her subject.

Vol overtuiging brengen wij daarom een keuze uit de The White Blouse portretreeks in Singer Laren over het voetlicht. De fotoportretten van Marie-Jeanne sluiten prachtig aan bij het in 2015 herontdekte schilderij van James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903): Symphony in White. The Girl in the muslin Dress, uit circa 1870. Dit doek, pars pro toto voor een reeks damesportretten waarbij het de Amerikaanse impressionist vooral ging om de witte kanten kleding waarin het model gehuld is, vormt de kers op de taart van de reeks geschilderde beeltenissen uit de collectie van Singer Laren, de grote passie van verzamelaar Anna Singer (1873-1962), stichtster van dit museum.

De door Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier geportretteerden uit de wereld van theater en dans voelen zich extra thuis in Singer Laren waar de beeldende kunst en de podiumkunsten elkaar in respectievelijk museum en theater ontmoeten.

It is with great pleasure, therefore, that we present a selection of portraits from the White Blouse series at Singer Laren. Marie-Jeanne’s photographs form a perfect complement to Symphony in White. The Girl in the Muslin Dress, painted by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) in around 1870 and rediscovered in 2015.

Representative of a series of female portraits in which the American Impressionist expressed his fascination with the white lace attire of his models, Whistler’s picture is the crowning glory of the series of portrait paintings now in the collection of Singer Laren and once the great passion of the museum’s founder, art collector Anna Singer (1873-1962).

Many of Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier’s subjects hail from the world of theatre and dance.

They will find themselves particularly at home at Singer Laren, where the visual and performing arts go hand in hand in our twin museum and theatre.

Tot de meest in het oog springende portretten van de serie The White Blouse behoort ongetwijfeld de foto van de dan honderdjarige kinderpsychologe Aimée barones van Hövell van Wezeveld en Westerflier (1917). (p. 8) Niet alleen omdat haar leeftijd en die van het kanten bloesje min of meer samenvallen, maar ook omdat het kledingstuk haar naadloos lijkt te passen. Inherent aan haar hoge leeftijd valt de berustende houding van de geportretteerde op die wordt versterkt door de fraai getekende rechterhand waarmee zij haar hoofd ondersteunt. De linkerhand die op de tafel rust en in zijn doorleefdheid markant afsteekt tegen de witte blouse, maakt het beeld van haar broze gestel compleet. Er is geen andere foto in deze reeks portretten waarin de fragiliteit van zowel het bloesje als van de geportretteerde zo scherp is vastgelegd.

Toen Marie-Jeanne van Hövell in 2011 haar witte blouse project aanving, koos zij er in eerste instantie voor om alleen meisjes en vrouwen met het witte bloesje te portretteren. Vijf jaar later echter besloot zij ook mannelijke modellen uit te nodigen zich in de kanten blouse te hullen. Het resultaat hiervan is een indrukwekkende serie van zo’n 75 portretten van bekende en minder bekende Nederlanders waarin het witte bloesje de hoofdrol speelt. Het fotoproject The White Blouse is representatief voor de werkwijze van Marie-Jeanne van Hövell, die sinds de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw gestaag werkt aan fotoreeksen rond één bepaald thema.

Among the most eye-catching portraits in the White Blouse series is undoubtedly that of hundred-yearold child psychologist Aimée Baroness van Hövell van Wezeveld en Westerflier (1917). (p. 8) It stands out not only because of the close match between the age of the subject and that of the blouse she is wearing, but also because the garment seems to suit her so perfectly. The viewer is struck by the passivity of the subject – inherent to her great age – and the way the pose is underlined by the finely detailed right hand on which she rests her head. Her left hand lies on the table, its aged appearance contrasting sharply with the fresh white blouse and completing the impression of physical frailty. No other image in the series captures the fragility of both the blouse and the subject in quite so poignant a manner.

When Marie-Jeanne van Hövell launched her white blouse project in 2011, her initial intention was to photograph only girls and women in the garment.

Five years later, however, she decided to extend the invitation to male subjects too. The result is an impressive series of around 75 portraits of celebrities and other people in the Netherlands with the feminine little white blouse in the leading role. The project typifies the approach adopted by Marie-Jeanne van Hövell; she has been working steadily on thematic series of this kind ever since the 1990s.
