JUSTA

Rua Áurea Chiado ➅ +351 21 413 8679

264 CHÃO DO LOUREIRO

AND CASTELO

Mercado do Chão do Loureiro Baixa ➅

This stunning 45-metre long neo-Gothic vertical lift was built to bring people back and forth between downtown and Chiado. Many attribute it to Gustave Eiffel, but in fact the father of the Eiffel tower didn’t design it. At the very top there is a terrace with a mind-blowing 360-degree view of the old city. Beware of pickpockets when going up the spiral staircase. These two vertical lifts make the walk from the downtown area to the Castle a little less tiring. The first lift departs from a building in Rua dos Fanqueiros (170/178) and drops people off in Rua da Madalena. A mere 100 metres further there is another lift, that in turn transports passengers to the level of Costa do Castelo street.

265 ASCENSOR DO LAVRA This was the city’s first funicular. It Calçada do Lavra Av. da Liberdade ➃ +351 21 413 8681

262 ASCENSOR DA BICA

started taking passengers from Av. da Liberdade up Calçada do Lavra in 1884, a year before the Glória funicular came into operation. Like the other traditional funiculars and lifts in Lisbon, it is classified as a National Monument.

A mere 100 metres further there is another lift, that in turn transports passengers to the level of Costa do Castelo street.

started taking passengers from Av. da Liberdade up Calçada do Lavra in 1884, a year before the Glória funicular came into operation. Like the other traditional funiculars and lifts in Lisbon, it is classified as a National Monument.

The garden overlooks the entire city and offers an unobstructed view of the Eduardo VII Park, Marquês de Pombal square and Av. da Liberdade. On a clear day you can see as far as the Arrábida mountains and Palmela. De São Pedro Alcântara garden has the best location in town, on the confluence of Chiado, Príncipe Real and Bairro Alto. It offers a 180-degree panorama of the downtown area, the Castle, Graça hill, and the river. There are two levels, the top one with trees and a kiosk and the lower one with beautiful French-style gardens.

The Lisbon Museum takes an original approach to museology by being a multibranched museum with five venues: Palácio Pimenta, Teatro Romano, Santo António, Torreão Poente and Casa dos Bicos. All of these branches together tell the story of this surprising city’s past. The Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president, ironically served as a royal residence at a certain point in time. The points of interest include the beautifully landscaped gardens and the Museum of the Presidency, that tells the story of the Portuguese republic through its presidents.

The Cais do Ginjal is located on the other side of the river and it’s accessible by taking the ferry that departs from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas. The trip across the river is a great experience in itself but the cherry on the cake is walking along the river with Lisbon as scenery. There are a few restaurants on the boardwalk with stunning views. The lively Lisbon docks, located right under the bridge, are basically a series of reconverted warehouses that now house a multitude of restaurants, cafes and nightclubs. There is something happening here every hour of the day. The marina in front is a pleasant place and there are also several paddle tennis courts.
