The Florentine poet Dante is quoted on the wall of a building occupied in the 15th century by merchants from Florence. The verse comes from Dante’s Inferno where a detail of Hell is compared to a dike built by the Flemings between Bruges and Wissant. You have to search to find the little memorial park next to the law courts. It commemorates twelve Belgians and one British civilian executed here by the Germans in the First World War. The bullet holes have been left in the brick wall as a permanent memorial to the victims, among them Charles Fryatt, captain of the SS Brussels, who was executed for attempting to sink a U-boat.

You might have expected a statue to Georges Rodenbach, whose novel Brugesla-Morte brought so many tourists to Bruges, but there is almost nothing, just a small hidden bronze plaque on the steps of the house De Rode Steen. It was put up in 1948 by Rodenbach’s descendants, although the writer never stayed here. A curious war memorial on the side wall of a house has the names and ages of 17 local people killed in a British air raid on the night of 17 October 1917. The bombs were intended to hit a German barracks, but missed their target, destroying 11 houses and killing 17 local people including six members of the Janssens family. A surprising stone plaque is attached to the side wall of the Casselbergh Hotel. It states that the young British king Charles II lived in exile in this building for three years, along with his two brothers. During his stay, he became an honorary member of the local archers’ guild and founded the Grenadier Guards.

Bruges has many museums, but not one is dedicated to its history, so you have to work it out for yourself. You might begin with the fabulous palace built by the 15th-century arms dealer Lodewijk van Gruuthuse. Its rooms are filled with furniture, altarpieces, musical instruments, paintings, tapestries and lace. Due to reopen in spring 2019. Not many tourists go inside the 14thcentury Stadhuis on Burg. But it helps you to understand the history of Bruges if you climb the steps to the great hall on the upper floor. Here you can admire the stunning wood ceiling along with 12 large murals painted in 1895 that offer a romantic history of the city.

the Sint-Janshospitaal is one of the oldest hospitals in the world. Its vast wards were still treating patients in the 1860s, but it is now an engaging museum dedicated to the history of healthcare in Bruges.

The world’s first rudimentary stock exchange originated in a 13th-century tavern with a sign outside showing three purses. Known as the beurs, it attracted foreign merchants from Spain and Italy. By the 15th century, it was one of the great hubs of the mediaeval economy, leading to the word bourse for a stock exchange. The little private museum dedicated to the Adornes family is virtually unknown. It opened in 2014 in a row of tiny white almshouses founded by a family that moved to Bruges from Genoa in the 13th century. The main focus is on Anselm Adornes, a leading merchant, diplomat and art patron, who was murdered in Scotland in 1483.
