Expressionism in the late 1940s and early 1950s, several avant-garde artists in the San Francisco Bay Area began to reengage with the visible world, applying the gestural style of action painting to depictions of people, landscapes, and still lifes. Two such artists were Paul Wonner (1920–2008) and William “Theophilus” Brown (1919–2012), who had met at the University of California, Berkeley. Together, the couple aligned themselves with this new direction and became leading practitioners of the style known today as Bay Area Figuration. Over time, both artists’ works became less gestural and more overtly representational and, in Wonner’s case, increasingly detailed and precise. Brown became best known for his psychologically evocative landscapes with classic bathers, as well as for his lonely urban scenes. Wonner also painted figures but received greatest acclaim for his “baroque” still lifes laden with everyday objects, animals, and flowers.

For the first time, exquisite and rarely seen ancient Hebrew manuscripts are presented in this stunning volume as ‘encounters’, highlighting their similarities and differences in a striking, visual conversation between manuscripts from two outstanding collections. This cleverly designed and richly illustrated dual language English and Hebrew publication draws its objects from both the Library’s collection and the highly prestigious, privately owned Braginsky Collection of Zurich, Switzerland.

Artists’ Corner in St Paul’s Cathedral is the final resting place for some of the greatest artists working in the United Kingdom, including Turner, Leighton and Millais. British painters of the nineteenth century are shoulder to shoulder with artists from America and Continental Europe who made Britain their home and helped to shape national taste. All of the painters and sculptors memorialised in Artists’ Corner are brought together in this guide, with references to some of their master works which chart a trajectory from history painting to the arrival of impressionism and abstraction in the twentieth century.

Hereford Cathedral, with its origins in the seventh century, is one of the oldest cathedral foundations in England and retains a warmth and intimacy all its own. Its two patron saints, the martyred Saxon King Ethelbert and the Norman Bishop Thomas Cantilupe, brought medieval pilgrims and their votive offerings, greatly increasing the cathedral’s revenues. This richly illustrated guide offers a readable and informative introduction to the buildings, treasures and history of one of England’s lesser-known cathedrals.

Ulugh Beg

Anuradha and Jane Ray

978 1 78551 484 5

Anuradha writes books for children in English and Nepali. Her works have been translated into many other languages including Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Danish and several local languages in South Africa.

Jane Ray has illustrated over 60 children’s books, working with authors such as Michael Rosen, Carol Ann Duffy, Jeanette Winterson, Dianne Hofmeyr and Kevin Crossley-Holland.

Sultan Ulugh Beg’s reputation as a mathematician, astronomer and man of wisdom is unchallenged, but he found the burden of rule troublesome. Born in 1394, he was the grandson of the great Timur (Tamerlane). Ulugh Beg’s passion was for astronomy, and he compiled the Zij-i Sultani (1437), considered one of the greatest early catalogues of stars. The last two years of his life saw him proclaimed Timurid Emperor.

Timur Mary Auld and Clémence Pollet

978 1 78551 511 8

Mary Auld is a writer of children’s information books, working over a broad range of subjects. She has been actively involved in music from an early age. Whether making music or writing children’s books, her aim is to share her enthusiasm and inspire readers.

Clémence Pollet is an acclaimed French illustrator. She has illustrated more than 30 children books that have sold internationally and have been translated in several languages. Her work is influenced by European and Oriental fine arts.

Timur (1336–1405) is one of the best-known Central Asian figures. Born in Transoxiana in modern-day Uzbekistan, Timur enjoyed a successful career of conquest and founded an empire and dynasty (the Timurids) as well as being a great patron of the arts. His almost ceaseless career of campaigning took him across Central Asia, Persia, Anatolia, Afghanistan and India, and he even had designs on invading China.

Al-Khwarizmi Daisy Bird and Darya Shnykina

978 1 78551 491 3

Daisy Bird worked in museum publishing for 20 years, but now writes full-time for both children and adults from her home in London’s Docklands, assisted by her two cats.

Darya Shnykina is a freelance illustrator born in Moscow, Russia. Although created using digital techniques, her artwork retains the charm of traditional materials and textures. Recent clients include The New Yorker, Google and Harper’s Magazine

Al-Khwarizmi (c.780–c.847) made immense contributions to geography, astronomy and, principally, mathematics. The most famous of his works is his treatise on algebra The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing (c.813–833). He was born in Khwarazm, a region that includes western Uzbekistan. He eventually moved to Baghdad, which had become a great centre of learning after the Muslim conquest of Persia in the 7th century.
