Save the Planet Water

Page 1

HI! NICE TO MEET YOU! WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

WE’RE ALEX AND MICKY, AND TOGETHER WE’RE TEAM ANTI-POLLUTION!

WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL JOB TO DO! We have to protect the most precious resource on Earth: WATER. Without water, all plants, animals and people on the planet wouldn’t exist.

THINGS CAN CHANGE: JUST TURN THE WHEEL! But for now, it’s time to go from words to actions, and you’ll be the one to decide what we do!

Each chaptEr contains a whEEl. turn it and complEtE thE figurEs to dEcidE how thEy bEhavE. thEn turn thE pagE to discovEr how things changE dEpEnding on thE choicE you ’ vE madE.

If you don’t like the impact your choices have on nature, go back a page and make different decisions. We all make mistakes, but we can learn and improve from them too!

WHAT IS WATER?

Water covers most of our planet. It isn’t just in oceans, rivers and lakes. Snow, steam and ice are also forms of water.

water is served

Water is taken from springs and pumped by pipe into our homes. Once it is used, it ends up in the sewers. After being treated, it then is returned to the environment.

Don’t waste water... why does it matter?

It’s important not to waste water. but what doEs “wasting” mEan anyway?

Let’s see!

The car, which runs on energy from the battery, was left on. Should Alex turn it off to save energy?

Alex’s actions have consequences for others.

now go back and sEE how things could havE gonE.

See? Water is like the battery and the Earth is like the car. It doesn’t work without water!

The unsustainable weight of pollution

Every day, the equivalent of the weight of 20 skyscrapers ends up in our waterways as trash. On its own, nature can’t get rid of all that rubbish!

Global warming, a burning issue

Pollution warms the planet and thus changes the way rain falls. In some places, it doesn’t rain anymore; while other places are experiencing intense storms!

Even people are made of water!

A part of us

Even if you can’t see it, our bodies are mostly made of water. That’s why we have to drink so much to be healthy. Water is life!

The foundation of life

All living beings are made of water. Some living things, like jellyfish, are almost entirely “liquid” inside.

Micky’s actions have consequences for the lives of other beings.

now go back and sEE how things could havE gonE.

Be a caretaker of our planet...

...starting in the bathroom!

Here are a couple easy things you can do to help.

The shower: a question of time

Taking a shower is the best option, but it has to be as quick a shower as possible. Every minute you spend in the shower uses up about 6 bottles of water!

Don’t flush your responsibilities down the drain

The same amount of water is also used each time you flush the toilet. Be sure to flush just once.

The drinking fountain doesn’t have a spigot, so water just keeps pouring out. Is there a solution?

turn thE whEEl and choosE how to align thE figurEs. thEn turn thE pagE to sEE what happEns!

A bad news...

The glass is half empty

One out of every seven people in the world doesn’t have drinking water at all and more than half of the world’s population doesn’t have enough.

...and a good one!

It’s raining hope! Technology can help us save water: with computerized irrigation systems, for example, farmers can use much less water.

Waste less water, eat better food!

There are parts of the world that have less water than others. To make sure things don’t get worse, we need to waste less...and that includes food!

The perfect diet for the planet What does food have to do with water? A lot! We use gallons and gallons of it to grow and produce the food we eat, especially meat!

Dad’s doing the grocery shopping. Who will remind him to buy less meat and more vegetables?

turn thE whEEl and choosE how to align thE figurEs. thEn turn thE pagE to sEE what happEns!

It isn’t just about food!

There are other smart ways to use less water. Here are two suggestions:

A big gulp

To use less water, drink more! You don’t need sodas and boxed juices anyway: they use thousands of gallons of water just to make them!

Don’t get wrapped up

Try to use less paper. Billions of gallons of water are used to make paper every year.

Alex’s decisions today have an impact on the availability of water in the future.

now go back and sEE how things could havE gonE.

A load of responsibility

Recommend they do laundry and run the dishwasher only when they’re entirely full of clothes and dishes. That way, they’ll use less water and energy.

You’re doing great!

Are you ready to learn some ‘big kid’ tricks to teach mom and dad? They’ll be impressed!

The seeds of change

Tell your parents it’s best to water the plants in the evening: it will evaporate less and the ground will absorb it all.
