Save the Planet Plastic

Page 1

Hi! What’s your name? We’re Alex and Micky, and together we’re Team Anti-Pollution!

We have an important job to do! We want to defend the planet from a harmful enemy: POLLUTION. Pollution fills the environment with poisonous waste and threatens beautiful places like forests and the ocean.

A real threat

One of the biggest threats out there is PLASTIC, which is used to make bottles, plates, glasses, straws, lids, and many other items. Plastic can be a problem! We’ll tell you why on the following pages...

Things can change: just turn the wheel! But for now, it’s time to turn our words into actions, and you’ll be the one to decide what we do!

Each chaptEr contains a whEEl. turn it to complEtE thE picturE and dEcidE how wE bEhavE. thEn turn thE pagE to discovEr how things changE dEpEnding on thE dEcision you’vE madE.

If you don’t like the impact your choices have on nature, go back a page and make a different decision. We all make mistakes, but we can learn and improve from them!

If you know what it is...you can avoid it.

Plastic is everywhere! It’s used to make packaging, furniture, bags, and even clothes and toys.

A microplastic emergency

Plastic can be so small that it’s nearly invisible and able to infiltrate just about everything, including the bodies of animals and people.

Good or bad?

Plastic isn’t dangerous on its own, but it isn ’ t biodEgradablE, mEaning it doEsn ’ t brEak down. For example, it will take nature 1,000 years to get rid of a water bottle!

Alex really liked his snack! But what will he do with the plastic wrapper?

Ranking the bad guys

Each of us can help protect the environment from its enemies: What plastic product could you give up?

Straws: give them a rest! They’re colorful and fun, but plastic straws are one of nature’s most dangerous enemies.

Balloons: deflate this enemy

If they end up in nature, all they do is pollute. Skip them for your next party!

Chewing gum is no game!

Did you know that chewing gum contains plastic?

Don’t spit it out on the sidewalk!

Micky is drinking water, and Alex is worried. What’s better: a single-use water bottle or a reusable one?

Drinking from a reusable bottle helps reduce the amount of plastic produced!

Micky’s choices even have consequences for the air in the city!

Be a guardian of our planet!

Help your family make the right choices every day, like when you’re out shopping.

Who’s hungry?

Plastic plates and utensils are convenient, but they’re used only once and then thrown away. That means they pollute the environment for years!

Too much packaging

Global cleanup!

Instead of buying lots of bottles of cleaning supplies, you can always refill the same container.

Did you know that lettuce is better when it doesn’t come wrapped in plastic?

Razors, what a pain!

Plastic razors are used for a short amount of time. If your dad uses a traditional razor instead, he’ll help protect the environment.

Creative reuse: it’s magic!

Lots of already-used plastic items can be transformEd into somEthing ElsE before being thrown away. Here are a few ideas you can try with the help of an adult.

Love colors? Make flowers!

The bottoms of plastic bottles can be used as stamps to print beautiful flowers!

Like to run? Make a toy car!

Glue four plastic caps to the side of a bottle of detergent, then attach a string to take your new toy car with you everywhere. Who’ll get there first?

For students: pencil holders!

A bottle as a pencil holder?! Get an adult to help you cut a bottle in half; attach a hinge and you’re done!

For sports fans: bowling pins!

To create a bowling lane in a hallway, all you need is a ball and a few plastic bottles, decorated however you like!

Alex found a few colorful plastic bottle caps. Is it better to throw them away or use them to make a fun toy?

“Wasting” means not taking advantage of an opportunity, like Alex’s chance to use less plastic and have fun!

Giving plastic new life

There are lots of people trying to give plastic a second life, but you have to be the one to make the first move by making sure you rEcyclE.

We’re on a recycling mission! Recycling is one of the easiest missions of Team Anti-Pollution! All you have to do is throw your trash in thE right containEr.

It doesn’t look like plastic, but it is! Blankets, bags, glasses, and even soccer jerseys: They’re all items that can be made from recycled plastic!

Micky’s actions have consequences for the creatures that live in the ocean.

Plastic can become a dEadly trap for animals. What’s the solution?

Recycling!

Here are a few easy things to remember before throwing plastic in the recycling bin.

Clean your plate

Remove any leftover food from plates and containers. Compostable substances like food can’t be recycled.

Smash it

Crush bottles and containers so they take up as little space as possible. That way, the recycling truck can carry more of them.

Micky’s choice can completely change the appearance of the beach.

now go back and sEE how things could havE gonE.

There are so many ways to help the planet. Here are a few things you can do as a member of Team Anti-Pollution!

Put pollution in a corner

Spend a few minutes every day cleaning up a part of your town or city. And, when you go for a walk and see plastic on the ground, pick it up!

The more the merrier
