Save the Planet Paper

Page 1

HI!

NICE

TO MEET YOU! WHAT’S YOUR NAME? WE’RE ALEX AND MICKY, AND TOGETHER WE’RE TEAM ANTI-POLLUTION!

A COMMON ENEMY!

Forests are in danger: they’re being cut down day after day. This phenomenon is called Deforestation. Our special assignment is to stop it and protect the planet!!

PAPER comes from trees

If forests are disappearing, paper is partially to blame. That’s right: to create the pieces of paper I’m holding, lots and lots of trees have to be cut down. So, let’s do all we can not to waste paper! Let me show you how...

Things can change: turn the wheel!

But now it’s time to go from words to actions, and you’ll be the one to decide what we do!

each chapter contains a wheel. turn it anD complete the figures to DeciDe how they behave. then turn the page to Discover how things change DepenDing on the choice you ’ ve maDe.

If you don’t like the impact your choices have on nature, go back a page and make different decisions. We all make mistakes, but we can learn and improve from them too!

What is paper?

Books, notebooks, diaries, journals, comic books: paper is useful! But if we use too much of it, we threaten the wellbeing of woods and forests.

Let’s help our animal friends

Lots of animals that live in the forest could disappear due to deforestation, including leopards, Asian elephants, chimpanzees, giant pandas, gorillas and tigers...

As usual, Alex dirtied his face while eating and has to clean up!

Should he use a single-use paper towel or a cloth napkin, that can be reused after washing?

turn the wheel anD choose how to align the figures. then turn the page to see what happens!

How is paper made?

Trees have to be cut down to make paper. They’re chopped into tiny particles, then mixed with lots of water and some chemicals.

The resulting pulp is turned into giant paper sheets.

A threat that comes from far away

Trees are often transported by ships and trucks that come from faraway places and pollute the air with exhaust fumes. Less paper, less pollution!

Micky made a wonderful drawing, but there’s no more space left on the paper.

should she also use the back, or get another piece?

turn the wheel anD choose how to align the figures.

then turn the page to see what happens!

Micky’s actions have consequences for the quality of the air.

now go back anD see how things coulD have gone....

two good habits... ...that reduce paper consumption.

Draw a world with less paper

Make the paper you have last as long as possible: reuse old photocopies and printouts to draw on, or turn them into useful containers.

The mark of true quality

Use recycled paper whenever you can. There are lots of different kinds in varying shades of white.

Alex’s actions have consequences for the problem of wasted paper... ...and so much more.

now go back anD see how things coulD have gone...

Now it’s your turn!

You too can make Bigtooth the bunny, like Alex. Here’s how, in just a few easy steps.

Materials

1 tube from a toilet paper roll

1 pair of scissors

Tempera paint

1 black marker

1 cotton ball

Glue 3 Then...

Use glue to attach the ears to the top of the tube. 4

1

To start

Cut two strips from the cardboard tube measuring 4/5ths of an inch (2 cm) and paint them. Those are the ears.

Paint the tube too.

2 Take a break

Let everything dry for 15 minutes.

Finishing touches

Use the pen to draw the bunny’s eyes, nose, whiskers and mouth on one side of the tube. Glue the cotton ball on the back to make the tail..

The power of recycling

There are lots of people trying to give paper a second life, but you have to be the one to make the first move by making sure you recycle.

We’re on a recycling mission!

Recycling is one of the easiest missions of Team Anti-Pollution! All you have to do is throw your trash in the right container.

Micky got a beautiful doll as a gift. What bin does the box belong in?

turn the wheel

anD choose how to align the figures. then turn the page to see what happens!

Micky‘s actions have consequences for the amount of paper used—and thus water too.

now go back anD see how things coulD have gone...

The planet will thank you!

To make sure you get it right, here are a few simple bits of advice to recycle perfectly.

Tinfoil:

Remember to post-it!

Don’t be fooled! Even if it comes on a big roll, the tinfoil used to store leftovers isn’t paper. It can be recycled, as long as you put it in the same bin as the tin cans. recycle me!

Have you ever used Post-Its? The yellow pieces of paper to write notes on? Even if they have a sticky part, they can be recycled like other kinds of paper—the adhesive dissolves in water.

Some bad news...

It’s hot!

The disappearance of the world’s forests has another grave consequence: without trees, which regulate wind and rain, temperatures will keep rising and it will get even hotter.

...and some good news

A German record

The award for the most responsible citizens goes to the Germans, who recycle three out of four paper items. I say we let them join our team!

Alex can play on the computer, but only after his dad has finished checking his email. What will Alex tell him?

turn the wheel

anD choose how to align the figures. then turn the page to see what happens!

Alex’s actions even have consequences for climate change.

now go back anD see how things coulD have gone...

Get your family to join our team!

Here are two ‘big kid’ suggestions that you can give to mom and dad: I bet they’ll be impressed!

Can you count the letters from the bank and the energy and gas bills? In lots of countries, you can have them sent by email, instead of printed and sent by regular mail.

No receipts needed

More and more shops are replacing paper receipts with a digital version, saving hundreds of thousands of trees every year.

It’s magic: forests are coming back!

Great work!

Forests are growing again and the animals, plants and people that depend on them can sleep soundly now!

Don’t stop... naturally!

Paper has no more secrets to us: we know what it is, how harmful it is to produce, how not to waste it and how important it is to recycle it.

The secret trick

We’ve discovered the magic formula of the four Rs:

If we all reduce reuse, recycle and recover, we can help save the planet!
