Ein eher seltenes Gefährt ist dieser Oakland von 1924 aus Nevada. Die Marke produzierte ihre Autos von 1907 bis 1909 unter dem Namen »Oakland Motor Car Company«. Ab 1909 wurde auch diese Company unter General Motors geführt und produzierte noch bis 1931 unter dem Namen »Oakland Motors Division«.

Ab 1926 wurde eine günstigere Variante des Oakland unter dem Namen Pontiac eingeführt. Später ersetzte Pontiac die traditionsreiche Marke Oakland komplett.

Stillgelegte Tankstellen findet man in fast allen kleinen Orten und entlang alter Highways. Leider stehen häufig nur noch die Gebäude, die alten Tanksäulen und Markenschilder sind meistens schon vor Jahren demontiert und an Sammler verkauft worden. Es ist erstaunlich wie groß der Markt für derartige Objekte ist. Die Preise für schöne alte Zapfsäulen zwischen den 1920er und 1950er Jahren sind derart in die Höhe geschnellt, dass nun schon Nachbauten aus Kunststoff zu Dekorationszwecken hergestellt werden. Das Foto zeigt eine 1940er Gas Station von Texaco, die Zapfsäule ist eine Wayne Model 70, ca. gebaut von 1937 bis 1948.

Disused gas stations can be found in almost all small towns and along old highways. Sadly, often only the buildings are left, with the old gas dispensers and brand signs long dismantled and sold to collectors. It is astonishing how prolific the market is for such objects. The price for well-maintained vintage gas pumps from the twenties to the fifties has soared to such an extent that now plastic replicas are manufactured for decorative purposes. This photo shows a Texaco gas station fitted with Wayne Model 70 gas pumps, built sometime between 1937 and 1948.

Über manche Fundstücke kann man nur staunen. Wie kommt ein Traumauto in diese Traumlandschaft? Das Traumauto ist hier ein VW Typ 14 Karmann Ghia Coupe um 1963. Die Traumlandschaft liegt nahe des Capitol Reef Nationalparks in Utah. Der Innenraum des schönen Coupes hat mächtig gelitten und der Fahrersitz kann ohne Übertreibung als durchgesessen bezeichnet werden.

One can only marvel at some finds: How does such a beautiful car end up in such a beautiful place? The dream car here is a VW Type 14 Karmann Ghia Coupé, the dream landscape is close to the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. The interior of the gorgeous coupé has obviously suffered a great deal and the driver’s seat is well and truly threadbare.

In Kürze wird auch dieser 1947er Nash 600 2-Door Slipstream Sedan vom dichten Grün verdeckt sein. Der Nash 600 war ein Automobiltyp, das Nash Motors von 1940 bis 1949 herstellte.

Ausgenommen davon waren die Kriegsjahre 1943 bis 1945. Ab 1950 wurde der Typ 600 in Nash Statesman umbenannt. Der 600er Nash war das erste Serienautomobil der USA, dessen Karosserie als Monocoque-Konstruktion gefertigt wurde.

Dabei wurde der Rahmen mit der Karosserie verschweißt und nicht wie damals üblich verschraubt.

Diese Bauweise ließ die Fahrzeuge leichter und steifer werden.

Before long even this 1947 Nash 600 two-door Slipstream Sedan will be swallowed up by dense greenery. The 600 model was an automobile that was manufactured intermittently by Nash Motors between 1940 and 1949. From 1950 it was renamed Nash Statesman. The Nash 600 was the first production car in the USA to feature a unibody construction. The design, which is commonly used today, uses the technique of welding the body and the frame as one unit rather than the more traditional bolting of the body to the frame. This style of construction made the vehicle lighter and stiffer.

In der weitläufigen Einfahrt der großen »BBB Ranch«, in der Nähe von Elbert in Colorado, wurde dieser 1941er Chevrolet Master DeLuxe 4-Door Sedan abgestellt. Das Colorado-Nummernschild zeigt als letzte Zulassung das Jahr 1962 an. Der betagte Chevrolet war fast komplett, ausnahmsweise waren noch alle Scheiben unversehrt.

In the spacious entrance of the sprawling »BBB Ranch« not far from Elbert, Colorado, this 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe four-door sedan came to a stop. The Colorado license plate shows 1962 as the last registration. The time-worn Chevrolet was almost in one piece; for once all windows were still intact.

Ende der Sechzigerjahre wurde ein Teilstück des nördlich verlaufenden Interstate Highway 80 fertiggestellt. Diese Texaco-Tankstelle aus den Vierzigerjahren war nun vom Verkehrsstrom abgeschnitten und musste schließen.

Even disused gas stations belong to the small, ghostly places in lonesome Wyoming. In the late sixties a section of Interstate Highway 80 running north was finished. As a result, this Texaco gas station from the forties was cut off from the traffic flow and forced to close.

Im einsamen Nordosten Montanas steht diese noch gut erhaltene Tankstelle der Marke Westland Oil. Diese Tanksäulen der Zwanziger, sogenannte Visible Gas Pumps, wurden noch per Hand bedient. Der Tankwart pumpte den Glaszylinder voll, der ein Volumen von 10 Gallonen (37,85 Liter) zuließ.

Auf einer Füllhöhenskala konnte nun die gewünschte Menge bestimmt werden; über den Druck der statischen Höhe wurde das Benzin in die Tanks gefüllt. Die linke Säule ist eine Visible Gas Pump der Firma Gilbert & Barker, Model 176, gebaut ab ca. 1925. Rechts steht eine Säule der Firma Wayne, Model 615, gebaut ab ca. 1928. Der abgestellte Truck ist ein 1969er GMC Astro 95 Cabover.

Tag der offenen Tür am 1934er Chevrolet Standard. Die Marke, benannt nach ihrem Schweizer Firmengründer und Rennfahrer Louis Chevrolet, ist seit 1918 Teil der General Motors Company. Zu Beginn zielte sie auf die Kundschaft des Ford Model T ab.

Chevrolets waren schlichte, solide Autos, die preislich durchaus mit dem Bestseller mithalten konnten.

It’s open-door day for the 1934 Chevrolet Standard. Chevrolet, named after the former Swiss company founder and race car driver Louis Chevrolet, has been a trademark of General Motors Company since 1918. In the early days, the brand aimed to emulate the sales success of Ford’s »Model T«.

Chevrolets were sleek, sturdy cars that could compete on price with the seemingly unrivalled cars from Ford.

In the remote northeast of Montana stands this well-preserved gas station branded »Westland Oil«. These gas pumps from the twenties, so-called visible gas pumps, were operated manually. With a hand pump, the attendant filled the clear glass cylinder with up to 10 gallons (37.85 liters) of fuel. The desired amount could be regulated using measuring scales on the glass container. Using gravity, the gas flowed down the hose and into fuel tank. The left dispenser is a visible gas pump from the company Gilbert & Barker, Model 176, built around 1925. The right dispenser is a Wayne brand model 615, built ca. 1928. The parked truck is a 1969 GMC Astro 95 cabover.

Eine unglaubliche Ruhe lag über dem einsamen Land, nur das surren tausender Mücken in der Luft. Der nahe Montana State Highway führt zur 20 Meilen entfernten Kanadischen Grenze. Welche Menschen die alte Kirche einmal gefüllt haben mögen, bleibt ein Rätsel. Im weiten Umland gibt es nur wenige, weit verstreute Farmen, viele davon sind bereits aufgegeben. Der alte Truck, ein Ford, der zwischen 1942 und 1947 produziert wurde, steht sicher auch schon Jahrzehnte auf der Wiese.

An immense peace lay over the desolate countryside, with only the hum of thousands of insects to be heard. The nearby Montana State Highway leads to the Canadian border, just 20 miles away. Who may have attended the old church remains a mystery. In this vast land the farms are far-flung, and many of them have been abandoned. The old truck, a Ford manufactured between 1942 and 1947, has probably stood in this field for decades.

The wind blows through the disused grain silos. The longabandoned railway tracks have become overgrown and the ramshackle barn roof has caved in under the weight of snow. This Dodge Dart Pioneer four-door sedan from 1960 still cuts a smart figure. The vehicle is still intact and has sustained only slight damages.

Eine Kombination in Rostbraun: ein 1948er Ford Super Deluxe 2-Door Sedan an einer ebenso alten Tankstelle, südlich von Dallas in Texas gelegen. Sie scheint vor langer Zeit vom Feuer zerstört worden zu sein. Alles BrennDas schöne 2-Door Hudson Coupé wurde 1941 gebaut. Leicht umrankt steht es am State Highway 418 in Louisiana. 1909 wurde in Detroit die Hudson Motor Car Company gegründet. Schnell erwarb sich Hudson den Ruf eines modernen und einfallsreichen Automobilherstellers; viele der heute selbstverständlichen Ausstattungskomponenten erschienen hier zum ersten Mal. Ende der Dreißiger hatte sich Hudson bis auf den dritten Platz der amerikanischen Autohersteller vorgearbeitet. Preisgünstigere Fahrzeuge waren unter dem Namen Essex und später Terraplane zu bekommen. 1954 wurde Hudson mit Nash zur American Motors Corporation (AMC) verschmolzen.

A wonderful combination in russet. A 1948 Ford Super Deluxe two-door sedan stands at a gas station of the same decade. This old gas station, south of Dallas, seems to have been destroyed by fire a long time ago. Any-

thing flammable has been obliterated, only steel and concrete managed to withstand the flames. It is only a question of time before this rare and wonderful scene will be destroyed by an enterprising scrap dealer.

This handsome two-door Hudson Coupe was built in the year 1941. It stands, partially wreathed, on State Highway 418 in Louisiana. The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded in 1909 in Detroit and quickly earned himself a name as an avant-garde and imaginative automaker. Many of the components that are delivered ex-works today first appeared in Hudson vehicles. By the end of the thirties Hudson had become the third largest automobile manufacturer in America. Cars in a cheaper price-segment were produced under the name Essex, and later became available under the name Terraplane. In 1954 Hudson merged with Nash to become American Motors Corporation (AMC).

Im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: Der Lack ist ab bei diesem 1953er Buick Special 2-Door Hardtop, der ursprünglich in Illinois zugelassen war. Was bleibt ist ein rostiges Relikt aus einer vergangenen Epoche, die im Hintergrund ebenfalls sichtbar ist: eine stillgelegte Ölförderpumpe mit dem dazugehörigen Tank. Hier in Electra, im nördlichen Texas, förderten in den Vierzigern und Fünfzigern mehr als 20 000 Ölpumpen das schwarze Gold aus der Erde. Viele der in diesem Bildband gezeigten Klassiker, wie dieser Buick, sind inzwischen verschwunden. Die Motive werden weniger, die restaurierten Klassiker auf den Highways dadurch vielleicht häufiger.

Vom Grün umschlungen, aber noch komplett und unbeschädigt: So versteckte sich der 1949er Plymouth Special DeLuxe 4-Door Sedan hinter einem verfallenen Haus am Texas State Highway 86 bei Quitaque.

Zunächst war hier wieder einmal »Gartenarbeit« angesagt, die Front des Klassikers musste freigeschnitten werden.

Hedged in greenery yet still whole and unscathed, this 1949 Plymouth Special DeLuxe four-door sedan stood obscured behind the rubble of a house on Texas State Highway 86 near Quitaque. In order to liberate the front of the classic car from the jungle, first a bit of garden work was required.

This elegant 1953 Buick Special two-door hardtop, originally registered in Illinois, has quite literally lost its shine. What remains is a rusty ruin of a bygone era. The time of yesteryear can also be seen in the background. A decommissioned oil pump with its tank is also a relic of better days. Here in Electra, northern Texas, 20,000 oil pumps extracted the black gold from the earth in the forties and fifties. Like this Buick, many of the vintage cars illustrated in this book have now gone. Such motifs are disappearing, but perhaps we’ll see more restored classics out on the road.

It’s not uncommon for nature to reclaim its territory. In the warm and sticky climate of the southern states, like here at Satartia in Mississippi, parked automobiles can quickly become swallowed by dense greenery. This classic car has succumbed to nature and first had to be cut free to decipher the make and model. Out of the thicket came a Chevrolet 210 from 1957, a sought-after model amongst classic car collectors.

In 1964 Ford unveiled its first Mustang, the chassis of which was based on the Ford Falcon. The Mustang was offered as a 2+2 coupe and cabriolet. With a starting price of less than 2,400 USD the vehicle quickly turned into a hot-seller. When the Mustang

was launched on the market, long queues apparently formed outside the dealerships.

With around 681,000 of the first model year sold, the Mustang still holds an American record. This find is one of the first generation Mustangs, built between 1964 and 1966.

The bizarre scene from a forest near Hope in Arkansas gives pause for thought. What looks like a collage of automobile technology is really just a careless disposal of unwanted trash: old wheels and radiator hoses, with an old gasoline pump poking out of the forest like Little Red Riding Hood. This pickup here, right next to Route 66 in Adrian/Texas, can no longer be left to rust in peace. Since this photo was taken it has been removed. The small town of Adrian is special: it lies exactly at the halfway point of the 2,450-mile-long Route 66. The route back to Chicago is just as far as the remaining distance to Santa Monica on the Pacific coast.
