A Note to the Reader

The smell of burnt rubber and high-octane fuel – that was my childhood. Dad’s car passion and gentle soul instilled in me a deep love for the automobile, not just as a machine but as a rolling sculpture, a symphony of steel and endless design innovations. That passion has taken me from the hallowed grounds of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Laguna Seca Raceway to the manicured lawns of Goodwood and Monte Carlo. I’ve been fortunate to not only meet legends like Shelby, Leno, Moss, Andretti and even Mrs. W.O. Bentley, but to also develop relationships with the movers and shakers in the restomod world.

These days, I get my cup filled by the digital disciples: Chris Harris, with his no-BS driving reviews; Supercar Blondie, who brings the latest and greatest to the masses; Tim ‘Shmee150’ Burton, with his encyclopaedic knowledge; Doug DeMuro, breaking down the quirks and features; and Harry Metcalfe whispering sweet nothings about classic lines and roaring engines.

It’s a beautiful obsession and I invite you to come along for the ride.

PORSCHE-INSPIRED RESTOMODS

Bruce Canepa lives in the car enthusiast’s lucid dream – having a successful sports car racing career, opening a luxury car dealership and not only helping a car become legal in the US, but choosing to spend his days searching for that car’s maximum capability. He founded Canepa Design in 1993 to customise exotic cars he sold but became particularly enamoured with the Porsche 959 – the car he was instrumental in helping import to the United States. After tinkering with the 959 for years, at first simply to make it emissions-compliant, Bruce launched the Sport Canepa program in 2015 to restore and refine the 959. Canepa’s facility in Scotts Valley, California, spends 4,000 hours on each 959 SC build, tackling a scrupulous restoration of the donor vehicle before upgrading every conceivable component to push the 959’s performance to new heights. Canepa’s project is on its third and final generation, incorporating over 30 years’ worth of refinement, which Bruce has gradually coaxed from Porsche’s first supercar. The result is a vehicle that remains ahead of its time now as much as it was in 1986.

‘The evolution of the Porsche 901/911 is really quite remarkable. Only 20 years from its beginnings and Porsche created the 959 concept – their first modern-era supercar, which included all-wheel drive, twin turbos, four water-cooled valve heads, 6-speed manual transmission, composite body panels, centrelock wheels, etc.’

‘I think I love GT cars so much because of the 928. As I grew up, the love for the transaxle Porsche in general never left me.’
