WILLIAM JONES COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL Located just south of the Loop in downtown Chicago, the replacement William Jones College Preparatory High School serves 1200 students in grades 9 through 12 in a new 278,000-square-foot facility. Due to the compact urban site, the school’s functions are dispersed vertically over seven occupied floors, rather than a low-rise horizontal layout typical of most schools. Classroom spaces are located at the center of the school, on Levels 4 and 5, to provide optimum proximity to the shared curriculum spaces above and below. A central commons space opens up along the main student corridors, providing circulation relief and natural light. At street level, a 3-story Lobby and pre-function space supports a 500-seat Auditorium which can be shared with the public for afterhours use. A Natatorium and Gymnasium support athletic functions on the top occupied level and provide views to Lake Michigan and Grant Park to the east for students and spectators. Staff parking for approximately 70 cars is provided below the building.

TINKHAM VEALE UNIVERSITY CENTER CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY Case Western Reserve University’s 2005 master plan identified the need for a strong physical and functional campus center to deemphasize the physical boundaries that exist between its two historical campuses. The new building location also has the distinction of being adjacent to the University Circle district, which includes various cultural institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Symphony Hall. Perkins+Will’s design of the Tinkham Veale University Center packages a multi-functional, dynamic, and community-focused facility in a two-story building that minimizes its encroachment into the existing facilities, while still creating a system of interconnected pathways that connect building to building and indoors to outdoors. The “always open” aspect of the university center takes advantage of the building’s central location on campus, and offers facilities that unite and engage the surrounding university population. Building functions, broken down into social/cultural, meeting/event, and food/ beverage categories provide intersecting yet defined public spaces for socializing, collaborating, studying, and relaxing. The University Center is designed to provide for informal and formal gathering for undergraduates, graduates, faculty, staff, and the community, unlike any building that currently exists on campus. The new university center is a model of environmental stewardship through its design, construction, and operation. The building is LEED Gold certified through the development of the site, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials, and indoor environmental quality.
