Racines Roots

In my opinion, art is what nourishes, elevates, and reveals. It is the strong root system that enables us, like a tree, to fully spread our branches, dare to exist, and realise our potential. Art is infinitely small and infinitely large. It is our earth, our sky. It is the water we drink, the fertile soil that sustains and nourishes us, the very air we breathe, the fire that quickens us. But more, it is the entire tree: the roots, trunk, and branches. It is this alignment that allows us to feel alive and vibrant.

Roots

What is art?

My roots I am fortunate to come from a large family. I like to think of it as a family tribe. Through it, I have learned what it means to live well, within a community. Art was ubiquitous in our home. Aesthetic considerations, both internal and external, were paramount to each of my parents. Together, they raised eight children to feel close to nature and have a taste for beauty. This is how I became aware that there is no greater creative force than Nature. It is in a state of constant renewal, permanently responding to life’s urgings. We can only learn from it, in all humility and humanity. This sensibility accompanied me throughout my youth and continues to be a real inspiration for me in everything I do, every day. Besides these extraordinary parents, my background also includes a long line of entrepreneurs who were both artists and scientists. I would like to honour their memory and sustain their work and the DNA I have inherited.

Rooting around I am convinced that travelling and coming into contact with other beliefs and cultures opens both the heart and the mind. When I came of age, I began to travel extensively to discover the world. I was incredibly lucky to be able to do so. From these journeys, I brought back lots of wonderful memories and works of art and craftsmanship which I then scattered around my home. I was able to encounter indigenous peoples, particularly in Australia and the United States, and this led me to perceive and develop whole new perspectives. For the natives of the United States, nature follows a circular path. Everything, from the infinitely small to the infinitely large, is interconnected, bound together. To cut oneself off from nature

From one to universal: creative unity

The word one shares the same Indo-European root with the Latin unus, meaning ‘single’, ‘unique’, as well as ‘the first link in a whole’. Behind this apparent simplicity lies a cornerstone, a structuring principle that has ranged across several languages, cultures, and ages. One does not indicate solitude: it is the point of origin out of which everything grows, a dynamic impulse, a movement that unifies and forges links between what seemed disunited. From this little word key concepts flow: uniqueness, that which is without parallel; and unity, that which unites what seemed separate. Neither rigid nor uniform, they are the foundation of all harmony. To unite is to give form to a whole, to assemble into a unit without distorting, like an orchestra in which each instrument finds its place to create a unique sound. On a global scale, this thrust extends to the universe itself, the very name of which expresses the idea of a whole in motion. The universal transcends borders, bringing together what would otherwise remain fragmented. In the arts, it permeates every work that aspires to express a common denominator, where every brushstroke, every note, every word becomes a bridge between spirits. Human history itself is marked by this tension between unity and disunity. Great institutions, like the university, carry within them this desire for shared knowledge, for a space where everyone can grow in a common quest. Someone acting alone is limited, but when united with others, he or she becomes part of a whole capable of making profound changes. This concept recurs even in matter: the onion, with its single bulb and multiple layers, is a natural metaphor for unity in diversity. An ounce of matter can contain the essence of a whole, while the uncial, in writing, was once a way of unifying the shape of letters. So, from the smallest to the largest, one is a creative force. It is the impetus that turns dispersion into harmony, shaping works and worlds and reminding us that behind each singularity, our actions in unison all aspire to the same universality.
