The Zurich Primer is structured around the five thematic areas of – “Housing”, “Mobility and Public Space”, “Existing Fabric and Continued Construction”, “Public Buildings and Spaces”, and “Work”. It addresses urban growth and transformation in relation to urban codes and proposes densification scenarios for the city of Zurich in the context of the projected population increase. In addition, through five visual essays, it offers a photographic survey of Zurich and highlights in short guest contributions how other cities in Switzerland (Basel, Geneva) and Europe (Brussels, London, Berlin) handle similar issues.

The Zurich Atlas is aimed at a broad audience interested in the dynamics of urban development and reveals the network of relationships between Zurich’s urban form and its urban codes. Based on collaborative research projects conducted at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio and ETH Zurich, it demonstrates – through various historical case studies from 1900 to the present – how the regulatory, legal, and normative frameworks influence the city physical and social conditions and vice versa. It also shows that these urban codes not only confirm the status quo and settle current conflicts, but also articulate visions for the city.

Teaching Architecture:
This publication offers a rare and fascinating insight into the teaching world of renowned architect Peter Zumthor. Based on previously unpublished material – including letters, sketches and photographs – as well as recent interviews with former students, assistants, colleagues and Zumthor himself, it examines the origins, historical context and far-reaching influence of his pioneering course “Primo Anno” (1996–1999) at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio. The “Primo Anno” exercises form the structural basis of the book, while thematically organised interviews open up diverse perspectives on Zumthor’s thinking and his unique didactic approach. Narrative chapters connect these elements into a common thread, reflecting on the findings and placing them in a broader theoretical context. Based on his dissertation, written between 2018 and 2021, as well as previously unpublished materials and interviews, the Swiss-Brazilian architect Rafael Lorentz documents a rediscovery that not only sheds light on Zumthor’s thinking, but also reveals his formative influence on the identity of the Accademia.

Born in Menziken (AG) in 1970 and living in Beinwil am See, the Zurich-based architect Ralph Blättler is a «quiet observer», as Gabriela Mazza writes in her essay accompanying this photographic volume. His atmospheric images unfold like cinematic still lifes. He captures architecture and landscape in a way that reveals both their «quiet beauty» and the «poetry of the incidental». The present publication brings together a seemingly random sequence of apparently casual architectural and landscape photographs taken in Switzerland, France and Italy. All of them share Blättler’s unfailing eye for the perfect frame, one that captures the mood of a place more eloquently than words, as Max Küng notes in his contribution.

Highly praised for its aesthetics and daring design, Japanese architecture has been rooted in socio-critical discourse since World War II. Especially in the 1970s, the house served as a means of criticism and strategic positioning on this “intellectual battlefield”. In the 1990s, Toyo Ito questioned this approach. What followed was a comprehensive debate on the changing relationship between housing, contemporary architecture and society, which was detrimental to criticism – and reflects the global shift towards so-called post-critical philosophy. In this book, 20 Japanese architects – including Toyo Ito, Kengo Kuma, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Kentaro Yamazaki – reflect on this change in interviews and essays, revealing a lively, albeit more subtle, form of criticism in contemporary practice.

The architecture of Daniel and Reto Durrer is characterised by an extraordinary flair for ornamental elements and design precision. Through subtle interventions and a reduced yet multi-layered design language, the two cousins consistently create site-specific architecture that rediscovers the obvious. Their work combines material and history into a clear yet multi-layered language that reinterprets everyday spaces as well as sacred places. Whether it is a careful redesign, as in the case of the interior of the historic Peters kapelle (Peter’s Chapel) in Lucerne, or the development of a new building for a primary school and kindergarten in Sachseln, their focus is always on finding a simple solution that is appropriate for the location. The architecture of the two Obwalden architects is based on a precise observation of the existing structures and a deep understanding of cultural continuities. Ornament and structure, light and material are combined in close collaboration with artists and craftsmen to form a sensually perceptible unity. They integrate their buildings into their context as a matter of course, yet each time they create something completely independent and contemporary. This monograph presents a body of work that mediates between tradition and the present and understands architecture as a responsible, sustainable cultural practice – characterised by a keen sense of scale, attitude and meaning.

The publication Ueli Zbinden Architekt is more than just a monograph of his work. It is an inventory of 30 years of teaching and building activity, reflecting the Zurich-based architect’s modern understanding of architecture, derived not from a radical break with tradition, but from a further development of historical, social and cultural continuity. His wide-ranging work reflects the fact that architecture should not only meet design requirements, but also fulfil a social mandate – from social concerns to climate issues – going beyond its purely practical value. This volume highlights that approach, covering projects ranging from the housing estate in Seon (1985–1989) to the design of the town centre for Dietikon (1992–2007).

Geneviève Bonnard and Denis Wœffray belong to a generation of architects from western Switzerland who established themselves following the decline of postmodernism. Their architectural language is characterised by minimalism, an awareness of materials and a focus on the location, while at the same time being experimental and multifaceted. This is reflected in the work of the Monthey-based practice in their diverse construction projects: from the primary school in Bovernier (2010), whose new volume nestles topographically at the foot of a slope and, with a wall that folds in both plan and section, provides the necessary outdoor spaces for breaks and sports, to the drop-in centre for adults in need in Saxon (2015), where communal areas are located on the ground floor and living spaces for short and longer stays are located on the upper floors, and whose choice of materials combines an industrial character with a homely atmosphere, to the Complexe Gare Sud in Siders (2019), whose sloping parapet bands allow the building envelope to shine in varying colour accents depending on the position of the sun.

BOB GYSIN PARTNER CHRISTIAN DUPRAZ
Founded in 1976 by Bob Gysin, BGP is now run by four partners in a collective structure. The architecture of the Zurich-based firm is based on radical simplicity: geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles, combined with a high degree of versatility. While sustainability and an innovative spirit characterise all processes, the projects are distinguished by a close dialogue with art. The range of constructed and renovated buildings by BGP includes housing, research, teaching and school facilities, retirement homes and complex planning projects such as the “Im Park” area development in Dietikon.

FIECHTER SALZMANN CHRISTIAN& DUPRAZ
In the tradition of Miroslav Šik, Hans Kollhoff and Max Dudler, the Zurich-based practice of Caroline Fiechter and René Salzmann primarily carries out conversion and extension projects in urban contexts. Whether classic residential buildings, public facilities or smaller projects such as the lakeside restaurant in Uster, their atmos pherically dense spaces are attractive living environments that transcend fleeting fashions. For example, their extension to the Mösli kindergarten and day school in Ostermundigen was awarded the Best Architects 2026 prize for its sustainability.

Founded in 2004, the office of Triesen-based architects Uli Mayer and Urs Hüssy gained recognition beyond Liechtenstein’s borders with their multi-award-winning three-family house in Gapont (2015). This was followed by various renovations, conversions and new buildings that densify and enrich the existing structures without negatively impacting them. The spectrum of their architectural language ranges from the renovation and extension of the listed Brendlehaus in Schellenberg (2006) to the school extension with a double gym and kindergarten in Mauren (2023).

KINO ARCHITECTS – Kyoto
With his Tokyo and Kyoto-based firm KINO architects, founded in 2008, Msahiro Kinoshita has been designing spaces and landscapes that focus on people and community since 2008: from kindergartens and libraries to cemeteries, office buildings and residential buildings. A clear stance and sense of social responsibility give rise to carefully considered architecture in the spirit of a sustainable society. For example, the conversion of a traditional boathouse with storage rooms into the Ine City Library, and the communal grave at Hirao Cemetery in Fukuoka have won multiple awards.

Since 2000, Andrea Uhrig and Dirk Bayer, together with their small team, have been contributing to self-sufficient building culture in urban and rural contexts with works that are both atmospherically complex and constructively logical. Applying its broad, internationally-orientated experience, the Kaiserslautern-based practice strives for architectural solutions that serve the concrete everyday reality of their users in a beneficial way. This is clearly evident in the award-winning projects Ökumenischer Kirchenpavillon in Landau (2015), Kolumbarium in the Gelöbniskirche Maria Schutz in K aiserslautern (2021) and the densification of the village centre of Hütschenhausen (2026).
