AUTUMN 2024

Conradin Clavuot’s work is based on his dedication to his own roots, his discussions during his training in the field of Analogue Architecture, and the values he learned to implement while working for the architect Peter Zumthor. With his minimalist approach and integration of natural elements, Conradin Clavuot has played a key role in shaping the modern architectural landscape in the last 30 years. The works of the Chur-based architect are characterised by clear lines and a harmony with the landscape, while also combining conception, functionality, regionalist cultural interests and constructive sophistication.
In recognition of his overall work, this publication compiles his most formative buildings in hand-stitched volumes and a striking slipcase.
The publication presents projects including the school facility in Laax (2023), the emergency unit of the Waldhaus Psychiatric Clinic in Chur (2022), the Carboni-Brot single-family home in Rhäzüns (2014), the Kuoni house in San Nazzaro (2012), the railway station in Chur (2006), the school with a multipurpose hall in St. Peter (1998) and the Vorderprätigau Substation in Seewis (1995).

Stefano Passamonti: Robaldo Morozzo della Rocca. Experimental attitude
Robaldo Morozzo della Rocca (1904–1993) shaped the architectural landscape of Italy – especially Genoa – through changing times. His work is impossible to categorise and, without taking any political stance, expressed itself in a variety of styles between the periods of the monarchy and the republic: from futurism to neoplasticism, and from Fascist rhetoric to experiments with concrete.
This monograph not only reconstructs the past, but also reveals the present-day relevance of Morozzo della Rocca’s approaches. It demonstrates how it is possible to take an autonomous path and simultaneously develop a universal vision of the world through architecture. Presenting his most important works – ranging from villas and palazzi to apartment buildings and his INA Casa projects – this publication traces the story of an architect who was ahead of his time and whose influence is tangible to this day.

Rénover le Lignon
This book documents the exemplary planning and implementation of renovation work led by Jaccaud + Associés in the Cité du Lignon, Vernier near Geneva between 2010 and 2024. The Cité, which was built between 1963 and 1971 by Georges Addor, Dominique Julliard, Jacques Bolliger and Louis Payot, is one of the largest housing estates in Switzerland and has been preservation-listed since 2009. The Cité’s renovation was the subject of numerous studies and developments that have gradually resulted in the establishment of a major building site since 2012, which continues to operate today.
The measures have improved the façades’ thermal insulation, renovated the communal areas and circulation routes, adapted the buildings to fire-safety regulations and renewed the technical shafts. Renovation work on the building envelope was implemented according to three principles, as presented in the studies by the TSAM Laboratory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
Building work on the more than 1,000 apartments was carried out without interruptions to normal operations, thereby ensuring that residents were inconvenienced as little as possible during the measures. This book gives a voice to the main protagonists of this team task and is illustrated by two photographers, Leo Fabrizio and Paola Corsini, who documented the completed project and its building stages from their own perspectives.

Five Good Swiss Plans
Apartment floor plans have a decisive influence on our lives. In the last 30 years, Swiss housing architecture has successively introduced the new ideal of floor plans with open and flexible uses. The aim is to offer spatial qualities to residents who are not yet clearly defined, thereby fulfilling the changing requirements of a diverse society. This publication presents five Swiss architects providing insight on their “good plans” with short texts and images:
Elli Mosayebi (EMI Architekten)
Jeannette Kuo (Karamuk Kuo Architects)
Maria Conen (Conen Sigl Architekt:innen)
Lütjens Padmanabhan (Lütjens Padmanabhan Architekten)
Philipp Esch (Esch Sintzel Architekten)
The book is rounded off with essays by Irina Davidovici (ETH Zurich), Jonathan Sergison (USI Mendrisio) and the editors Kate Finning (University of Melbourne), Guillermo Fernández-Abascal (University of Sydney) and Ties Linders (ETH Zurich).

Kora Bürgi: Der architektonische Einfluss von Frank Lloyd Wright in der Zentralschweiz
Building on her experience following a several-week trip to Taliesin West, Kora Bürgi investigates Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and traces his work in the USA and Switzerland. The result of the field research is a presentation of his influence on the Central Swiss architectural landscape – a theme that has not been studied before. That influence ranges from partial copies of elements of Wright’s architecture to own interpretations of his architectural ideas.
This publication analyses 14 buildings in Central Switzerland – from the Heimbach school and the Villa Schnyder (both in Lucerne) to the residential buildings in Brodhubl (Canton of Obwalden) – including Wright’s influence on various architects, such as Josef Gasser, Lisbeth Sachs and Otto von Deschwanden. The author also sheds light on the distribution of Wright’s urban-planning principles and the future of his architecture in Switzerland.

GWJ Architektur
Based in Bern and Zurich, the practice GWJ Architektur consists of 50 people from ten different countries. It aims to create sustainably attractive locations for individuals and society as a whole, constructing socially, economically and climate-compatible projects throughout Switzerland. For instance, the UVEK Campus, Ittingen is a modern reinterpretation of the renewable building material of wood. The Huebergass housing estate was commended by the UIA in the category “Sustainable Future”.

CLR architectes
Founded in 1999 by Damien Chevalley, Patrick Longchamp and Gilbert Russbach, CRL architectes have constructed a wide range of schools, administrative buildings and housing. Always in search of new typological solutions, the Geneva-based practice is characterised by regular competition participation and the reinterpretation of historical models, as exemplified by the Ecole du Petit-Lancy – a user-orientated extension to existing structures that enhances its urban environment.

dl-a
Designs by the Geneva-based practice dl-a combine innovation with aesthetics. Through its multidisciplinary approach, the team led by Vincent Mas Durbec, Inès Lamunière and Afonso Ponces de Serpa produces spaces that reflect the zeitgeist, while remaining timeless, taking a stance and yet organically merging with the surroundings. For instance the Agroscope in Nyon uses innovative architecture to create an inspirational research facility, its silhouette and colour scheme entering into a dialogue with the landscape.

Menzi Bürgler Kuithan
Oliver Menzi, Philippe Bürgler and Helene Kuithan focus on ecological and economic sustainability, creating buildings with a precise, multifaceted architectural language. The range of services provided by the Zurich-based practice, which was founded in 2003, is reflected in the renewal of Basel SBB Station – from the production of a master plan to the development of specific details such as light fixtures.

SPS Architekten – Thalgau
Simon Speigner is a pioneer of sustainable, energy-efficient building in Austria. His practice sps architekten focuses on creativity and innovative solutions to produce unconventional, customer-orientated buildings that are both aesthetic and sustainable. The practice has won numerous wood-building awards and state prizes, for instance for the oh456 plus-energy office building and cultural power plant in Thalgau.

Founded in 2010 in Lausanne, the practice of Valentin Kunik and Guillaume de Morsier is shaped by its context-related projects, which are often implemented in experimental collaboration with engineers, photographers, philosophers and scenographers. The resulting spaces interact with their environment. For example, the Le Pont residential building is completely made of wood and based on an innovative construction system.

The architecture of the Bern-based practice Fritschi Beis transforms landscapes, spaces and buildings, giving them a new quality. In doing so, the practice unites familiar and contemporary aspects, inspired by the diversity of our society. For example, the renovation of the mill in Hunziken continues to weave the unique dialogue between art, local “Brocki” stores and architecture in its very unique vocabulary.
