Peter Staub: Tony Fretton, willkommen an der Universität Liechtenstein. Sie haben in letzter Zeit viele Interviews gegeben. Sind Interviews eine effiziente Methode, Ihre Ideen mitzuteilen?

Peter Staub: Tony Fretton, welcome to the University of Liechtenstein. You seem to have given quite a few interviews recently. Are they an efficient way to communicate your ideas?

Tony Fretton: Nach einer gewissen Zeit ist es eben so. Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre viele Interviews gegeben. Ich bin einfach sehr oft verfügbar (lacht).

Tony Fretton: After a certain point, that’s what happens. Over time it turns out that I have done a lot of interviews. I’m just very available (laughs).

In einem Interview im a+t magazine 1 erzählen Sie von Ihrer Jugendzeit und wie Sie an die AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture, London) kamen. Sie sagen: «Ich war 18 und arbeitete nach meinem Realschulabschluss und vor meiner Zeit am AA drei Jahre lang als Bauarbeiter. Ich baute Gebäude, hob Fundamente mit der Hand aus, ich mischte Beton und arbeitete mit Maurern und Gerüstbauern.» Würden Sie sich als praktischen Architekt, vielleicht sogar als Handwerker bezeichnen?

In an interview in a+t magazine 1 you talked about your youth and about how you got to the AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture, London). There you said, “I was 18, I was a construction worker for three years between high school and the AA. I built buildings, I dug foundations by hand, I mixed concrete, and I worked with bricklayers and scaffolders.” Do you consider yourself as a hands-on architect, maybe even as a craftsman?

Nein, ich bin kein Handwerker. Ich sagte später in jenem Interview auch, dass die Form der Löcher im Boden und die Art, wie die Ziegelsteine aufeinandergeschichtet wurden, für mich genauso wichtig waren wie das Gebäude selbst. Ich betrachte Materialien auf eine andere Weise, und darauf werde ich später noch in diesem Interview eingehen.

No, I am not a craftsman. Later on in that interview I said that the shape of the holes in the ground and the way bricks are stacked were as important to me as making the building, so I have a different approach to materials and I’ll develop that later in this interview.

And I am more concerned with how a piece of architecture can be both an artwork with ideas that contribute to culture, and an object of use that is taken over by people who don’t know or care about culture.

How important is the construction process in your work? Can you maybe describe how you work, and how you design?

Wie wichtig ist der Konstruktionsprozess in Ihrer Arbeit? Können Sie uns schildern, wie Sie arbeiten und entwerfen?

If you are a good architect you will know to make your buildings well-built and finely detailed, but construction in itself is not my primary interest. A lot of our buildings are structurally rather irrational. The open front of the Lisson Gallery required very stiff joints in the structure. The Red House has a massive concealed structure to carry the roof garden above the salon below. But it is not too different from apartment buildings in Edwardian London, where the structural rationale was compromised to allow a variety of different apartments to be built above each other. Different attitudes to structure can be found if you look back beyond modernism.

Construction is a way to let a building say something. Imagery, relations with things in the vicinity and the possibility that the building is communicative are the important things for me.

Ein guter Architekt kann ein solides Bauwerk mit vielen Details erschaffen, aber mein Hauptinteresse gilt nicht der Konstruktion an sich. Viele unserer Gebäude sind strukturell eher irrational. Für die offene Frontseite der Lisson Gallery waren sehr stabile Fugen im Tragwerk notwendig. Das Red House hat ein riesiges verdecktes Tragwerk, auf dem der Dachgarten über dem Salon errichtet ist. Das unterscheidet sich nicht wesentlich von den Wohnbauten, die zur Zeit Edward VII in London errichtet wurden, wo konstruktive Grundprinzipien eingeschränkt befolgt wurden, damit verschiedene Wohnungstypen übereinander gebaut werden konnten. Es gibt verschiedene Positionen zur Konstruktion, wenn man die Zeit vor der Moderne genauer betrachtet.

Der Ausdruck eines Bauwerks wird durch dessen Bauart bestimmt. Für mich ist nicht nur die Symbolik wesentlich, sondern auch wie sich das Gebäude im Kontext zu seiner Umgebung verhält, und wie es als kommunikatives Instrument agieren kann.

Sie erwähnten das Red House. In einem Artikel im Guardian stellte Architekturkritiker Jonathan Glancey fest: Man findet selten ein Bauwerk in

You mentioned the Red House. In an article in The Guardian the architecture critic Jonathan Glancey said “It’s rare to find a house in London of such singular crafted quality like this.2” How do you achieve that?

Well, it’s not difficult in London if you have a lot of money. The offices of Norman Foster and

clients? Lots of your Ĺ“uvre has to do with the arts and creativity.

Mostly its is very good, but occasionally it doesn’t work. There has to be quite a lot of commonality between client and architect to make an exceptional building.

Hugo Dworzak: About 20 years ago there was this discussion, which still continues, about whether museums should be for art or whether they should be artworks in themselves. You seem to make museums and galleries not just for architecture but also for people visiting them. Is that something that is very important for you?

Our buildings are pieces of architecture, but they let you see the art not the building by working at the periphery of your experience. I also think that spaces to view art are better if they have imperfections and irregularities that reduce their formal precision. Not many architects are willing to work this way.

Do you collect art?

I have collected in the past but not anymore.

The idea of owning artworks has become strange to me. I prefer books with pictures of art, especially photography. In fact, I am interested in art
