Porsche 911

FOREWORD The Porsche 911 is a legend, a design icon that even today retains its original charm—and remains a challenge for LEGO ® construction.

Before we decided to write this book, I had already seen some models by other LEGO ® builders, but had never tried them myself. Perhaps because I thought the iconic line was difficult to reproduce and could not be redefined in the typical Minifigure size.

Even among LEGO ® fans, the question of scale often leads to debate. What scale should you use to make a model? Of course, the larger the scale, the more details that can be reproduced. On the other hand, larger scales also require disproportionately more parts. The so-called Minifigure scale of 1:42 is still widely accepted, although it’s not undisput-

ed. But in my opinion, the size ratio between real people and cars cannot be scaled to a LEGO ® size, because the proportions of the Minifigure alone do not correspond to the real model.

For this reason, I always refer to the construction of my vehicles as “model making,” which does more justice to the models than to the height of the toy figures. And that‘s why I decided on a 7-stud width (7W). Wheels, splash guards, windshields, etc. can all be wonderfully arranged—and then, with some simple math, lend themselves to particular proportions.

Building the car in 6W would make the cockpit look decidedly narrow, especially as I would have to lower the roof between the rear fenders.

A 5W cabin, on the other hand, cannot be created using typical windshields from the LEGO ® range. For a long time, the 2x1 roof tile in trans clear was only available in old, used condition, which often meant it was either discolored, or it was very expensive to buy as new. Recently, however, after more than 30 years, it has once again become part of an up-todate LEGO® set, making it widely available.

In any case, it was a great pleasure for me to be involved in this challenge, and hopefully this is reflected in my models.

But back to the 911! To recreate such a beautiful design with so many different arches and curves using small plastic bricks while still making it recognizable presents a real challenge. For example, the front headlamps unfortunately cannot be integrated into the typical line. Fellow admirers of Porsche® may also discover the other compromises I had to

INTRODUCTION The first thing to mention is that a sticker sheet from the LEGO® Speed Champions Set 75895 „1974 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0“ is a very useful thing to have for each model in this book. It has the Porsche® logo printed on transparent adhesive film, so it can be used on any background color.

This set also includes the bumper stickers used on some models.

Many varieties of the stickers needed for the design of the license plates are available in various City sets.

As mentioned in the Foreword, the constantly changing availability of bricks creates one or two hurdles for the LEGO® fan. However, using a range of colors and brick sizes is always an option. For example, the windshield can be assembled from various combinations of roof tiles in different sizes. Just take a look at the bricks you already have.

Some of the roof tiles are still available in the current LEGO® offering and can therefore be ordered using their service (www.lego.com/en-us/service).

Other, older versions can be purchased through the LEGO® -owned internet sales platform, BrickLink. com, where vendors from around the world offer up rarities and unique items.

For the building instructions in this book I chose the symmetrical arrangement of 3 slopes, which are alternately 2, 1, and 2 studs wide. But you can also, of course, choose other arrangements of roof tiles.

The early models offer, among other things, the following possibilities for building them with windshields at a 45-degree angle.

And various other 2x1 combinations.

With the newer models like the 991 or the RSR there are basically the same possibilities, only one row of studs larger, whereby the angle of inclination changes to 33 degrees.

Unfortunately, the current situation is that the supply of bricks of this size can become more expensive if you stick with trans clear as a windshield color. However, since it is a matter of model or toy construction, or even a matter of taste, there are, of course, no limits as far as color is concerned. It is cheaper to switch to various other colors, such as light gray, dark gray, black, etc.

However, at the time of this book going to press, no Tile, ModiďŹ ed 2 x 2 with Studs on Edge was available in this color. So, I had to make use of a vintage element of scale: Tile 3 x 6 with 4 inline Top Studs.
