Phyllida Barlow cul-de-sac
The British artist Phyllida Barlow’s large-scale sculptures eschew serenity, balance and beauty in favour of instability, obstruction and oddness. They invade the spaces they inhabit, instead of neatly complementing them. This book records cul-de-sac – Barlow’s major installation at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2019 – with extensive photography in the galleries. Alastair Sooke’s introduction situates Barlow as a key figure within contemporary sculpture, and an interview between the artist and the show’s curator Edith Devaney examines the new work in the exhibition in detail.
