Early on in the process, we decided that this would be n either a coffee-table book, nor a book about story telling. We felt that it should showcase not only our finished work, but also the process that led us there, and how we come up with the ideas that give each project a unique personality. In order to do so, we felt it was crucial to give voice to those people who contributed with their passion, profession and skill, and to recognize their eagerness to help us realize our unusual ideas. This enthusiasm is a part of their soul, the drive behind their creativity and the key to the success of many projects. We didn‘t want this book to focus only on design, because most of our projects already tell their own story. We wanted it instead to be about the process behind the projects, about a group of philosophers andcritics, hunters and gatherers, a rtists and artisans who love and live their vocation. Narrowing down the people to include wasn‘t easy, given the number of projects and collaborations we have had. Nevertheless, we are proud to provide a few insights from collaborators who have placed their trust in us over the years, who inspired us and pushed us to go off the beaten track, creative souls for whom no idea was too unusual or unconventional. Hotels aren’t just for resting
W
hen I was young and still studying, I was already co-shareholder of my family‘s real estate company. We had decided that we wanted to invest in listed properties, buildings with character and stories behind their façades. “Think big” was the motto. We were already interested not just in investing in individual properties, but in developing entire districts. It wasn‘t long before we had acquired a huge industrial lot in Hamburg: Bahrenfeld, the second-largest development area within the city of Hamburg, after HafenCity. I opened my first hotel there, Gastwerk, at the turn of the millennium in a former gasworks. The four-star loft hotel has been a member of Design Hotels since opening in 2000. Less than three years later, we came up with the idea of complementing Gastwerk with a design-oriented budget hotel, which is when I first met Armin. The 25hours hotel took off, and the rest is history. Their central leitmotif is that none resembles the others. The hotels‘ charms, instead, lie in the properties themselves. My passion for old buildings means
