DER ABSPRUNG STEHT IMMER AM ANFANG EINES AUFBRUCHS, EINES ABENTEUERS UND – IN MEINEM FALL – EINER GROSSEN OZEANPASSAGE. MANCHMAL FÜHLT ES SICH AN WIE EIN SPRUNG MIT VERBUNDENEN AUGEN VON EINER KLIPPE.

THERE’S ALWAYS A GREAT LEAP TO BE TAKEN AT THE START OF A DEPARTURE, AN ADVENTURE AND, IN MY CASE, A GREAT OCEAN PASSAGE. THIS SOMETIMES FEELS LIKE JUMPING BLINDFOLDED OFF A CLIFF.

Viele – ich besonders oft – träumen von der großen Reise, der großen Tour oder dem großen Schritt im Leben. Tatsächlich abszupringen und diese Träume umzusetzen, ist eine ganz andere Sache. Das machen nur wenige: Gesellschaftlich normale bürgerliche Strukturen und Sicherheiten zeitweise oder sogar für immer aufgeben, gegebenenfalls tatsächlich kündigen, Widerspruch aushalten, Widerstände überwinden, Mittel und Wege finden oder erfinden, Zelte abbrechen und tatsächlich losfahren ...

Zu diesem Schritt gehört viel; man kann es lernen, lesen, studieren, üben oder kaufen, und bei vielem kann man sich helfen lassen. Doch zwei Dinge gibt es meiner Meinung nach, die einem niemand beibringen kann: es wirklich zu wollen – und mit der Ungewissheit klarzukommen.

Dieser starke Wille, der irgendwann durchbricht oder auch nicht, stammt meist aus der Kindheit und Jugend, ist etwas, das wir in uns tragen. Der Umgang mit Ungewissheit und Sicherheit ist zudem bestimmt eine

Many people, including myself on many occasions, dream about the great journey, the epic tour or the major step in life. Actually taking the great leap and making these dreams real is a very different matter. Very few see it through. Abandoning the normal structures and securities of society for ever or even for a while, actually leaving your job if necessary, withstanding opposition, overcoming obstacles, finding or inventing the means and ways, pulling up stakes, setting off...

There’s a lot involved in taking this step; you can learn it, read up on it, study it, practise it or buy it, and you can get help with many aspects of it. But there are two things that I believe nobody can teach you – to really want something, and to be able to handle the uncertainty.

This strength of will that comes through at some point – or perhaps doesn’t – is usually there from childhood or youth, something that you carry inside you. And dealing with uncertainty and security is certainly a question of upbringing, but also experience. These days, who can

Wer kann heute garantieren, dass ein Job wirklich so sicher ist, wie man glaubt? Sicherheit spielt aber auch auf einer anderen Ebene eine wichtige Rolle: Was kann es für ein größeres Risiko geben, als deinen großen Traum zu verpassen? Menschen, die Unfälle oder tragische persönliche Schicksale erleiden oder miterleben, ändern nach dem Schicksalsschlag manchmal ihr Wertesystem, bewerten Sicherheiten und sich lohnende Ungewissheiten anders. Eine solche Situation hat in meiner Jugend mit den Ausschlag gegeben, den gänzlich unsicheren Weg des Profisegelns zu versuchen.

Im Rückblick sind die Absprünge tolle Erinnerungen, vielleicht die besten – vor allem, wenn man sicher angekommen ist. Wir sagen immer, das Schönste ist die Zieldurchfahrt, die Ankunft mit dem kalten Bier und der Umarmung; aber ohne Absprung und Start kein Ziel, das gehört zwingend zusammen. Je schwieriger der Start und Absprung, desto größer die Freude im Ziel über das Erreichte. Sagen wir vereinfachend: Der Absprung ist das Größte!

Inzwischen bin ich auf den Ozean so oft gestartet, dass es irgendwann fast zur Routine wurde. Doch genau das darf es nicht.

KREUZSEE HINTER KAPSTADT Ende Dezember 2013 in Kapstadt: Wir gehen aus unserem Crewhaus gemütlich zu unserem Frühstückscafé, in dem wir während der letzten Wochen der Vorbereitung schon oft waren, jeder mit einer kleinen Tasche über der Schulter, die unsere Ausrüstung für ein Transatlantikrennen beinhaltet. Wir bestellen das Gleiche wie immer und reden über die gleichen Themen wie immer, Gossip, etwas Weltpolitik aus der Zeitung, Sport, in der gleichen alltäglichen Stimmungslage, und plötzlich sagt einer: »Oh Mist, lasst uns nicht zu spät kommen, heute startet ja die Regatta.« Ach ja, da war ja noch was, wir hatten ja noch einen Job: Wir liegen mit dem VOR70 Maserati bereit zum Start für die Kapstadt–Rio-Regatta über den Atlantik. Seit Tagen beobachte ich mit Skipper Soldini in großer Sorge eine polare Kaltfront, die an Tag zwei oder

guarantee that a job is as secure as you think it is? But security also plays an important role on another level: What greater risk can there be than the risk of missing out on your big dream? People who experience or are affected by accidents or personal tragedies sometimes change their value systems afterwards, and re-evaluate security and the possible benefits of uncertainty. When I was young, a situation of this nature altered my path and I decided to try to make it in the very uncertain world of professional sailing.

Looking back, these great leaps are wonderful memories, maybe the very best – especially once you’ve arrived safely at your destination. We always say that crossing the finish line is the best, being greeted with a cold beer and a hug; but without the great leap and the start there is no arrival – the two are inseparable. The more difficult the start and the leap, the greater the joy from your achievement at your destination. Simply put, the leap is the greatest thing!

By now I’ve started out to sea so often that it has almost become routine. But this is exactly what mustn’t happen.

ROUGH SEAS AFTER CAPE TOWN It’s the end of December 2013, in Cape Town: We leave the crew house and amble down to breakfast in the café where we’ve spent many hours during the past weeks of preparation, each of us carrying his little shoulder bag holding the equipment for a transatlantic race.

We order the usual and talk about the usual things – gossip, politics from the papers, sport – everything as relaxed as usual until someone suddenly says: »Oh crap, we’d better not be late, the regatta’s starting today.« That’s right, we almost forgot that we had a job to do: We’re ready to start on the VOR70 Maserati on the Cape to Rio regatta across the Atlantic. For days skipper Soldini and I have been observing with acute concern a polar cold front that’s due to hit us and the fleet on day two or three of the regatta – with winds of up to 60 knots.

drei der Regatta über uns und die Flotte ziehen wird – mit bis zu 60 Knoten Wind. Die Regattaleitung benutzt nur das GFS-Wettermodell statt des besseren europäischen ECMWF-Modells und sieht den starken Wind nicht oder zu spät und will den Start trotz unserer Bitten nicht verschieben. Wir machen uns vor allem Sorgen um die kleinen Schiffe. Zu Recht, wie sich tragischerweise herausstellen wird. Drei Tage später gibt es einen Toten, mehrere Schwerverletzte, eine gesunkene Yacht und etliche aufgegebene Yachten. Auch für uns sind Wind und Seegang eine echte Herausforderung und Bedrohung.

Ich stehe nach Durchzug der Front in meiner Wache im Überlebensanzug am Ruder und versuche die Maserati mit kleiner Besegelung durch die chaotischen Wellen zu steuern. In so einer Front dreht der Wind ja oft um mehr als 90 Grad, und so segeln wir nun halbwind durch zwei Wellensysteme. Eins kommt schräg von hinten und eins schräg von vorn. Ich gerate auf einer Welle, die von hinten kommt, ins Surfen mit bis zu 36 Knoten Speed und versuche durch Abfallen Speed rauszunehmen, da kommt aber die Welle von vorn, in die wir brutal reinbrettern. Ich sehe sie im letzten Moment auf uns niederbrechen und werfe mich flach hinter das Steuerrad. Alle im Cockpit werden weggerissen und rucken hart in ihre Lifebelts. Es ist wie ein Auffahrunfall. Ich rappele mich sofort wieder auf und steuere weiter. Der Niedergang wird aufgeschoben; besorgte Blicke streifen sich.

Die hereinbrechende Welle hat den backbordseitigen Segelstack in Luv mit voller Breitseite getroffen und ins Deck gedrückt. Auf so einem VOR-Boot befinden sich alle Segel immer an Deck, wo sie in Luv aufgestapelt und mit Lastwagenspanngurten an Deck gezurrt werden. Damit das ganze Paket, »der Stack«, nicht verrutscht, gibt es Stackingposts: starke Nirorohre, die in Löcher ins Deck gesteckt werden, um das Ganze an Ort und Stelle zu halten.

RUHE NACH DEM STURM Ein solches Nirorohr ist mit seiner Verankerung ins Deck eingebrochen und auf den darunter schlafenden Pierre Casiraghi wie ein Dolch hinuntergeschossen.

postpone the start in spite of our requests. We’re particularly concerned about the small boats. With good reason, it turns out, tragically. Three days later there is one dead, a number seriously injured, one sunken yacht and many other yachts that have dropped out. Even for us, the wind and the sea conditions are a real challenge and a threat. After the front has passed, I stand on watch at the rudder in my survival suit and try to steer the Maserati through the chaotic waves with small sails.

In a front like this the wind often turns more than 90 degrees, so we’re now sailing on a beam reach through two wave systems. One is coming at an angle from astern and the other at an angle from in front. I’m suddenly surfing on a wave from behind at a speed of up to 36 knots and I try to lose speed by bearing away when the wave comes at us from the front and we hammer into it. At the last moment I see it crashing down on us and I throw myself to the deck behind the wheel. All of the bodies in the cockpit are pulled hard into their lifebelts. It’s like a rearend collision. I pull myself to my feet again and carry on steering. Our demise is postponed and we exchange worried looks.

The crashing wave hit the port sail stack with a full broadside on the windward side and pushed it into the deck. On a VOR boat all of the sails are always located on deck, stacked at the windward side and lashed to the deck with truck lashing straps. The whole package, or »stack«, is prevented from slipping by stacking posts – strong stainless steel tubes stuck into holes in the deck to hold everything in place.

CALM AFTER THE STORM One of these stainless steel tubes and its mooring breaks through the deck and shoots like a dagger at Pierre Casiraghi sleeping down below. The problem is quickly remedied with Sikaflex and carbon plates rapidly cut to measure. Pierre escapes otherwise unharmed, he gets a new sleeping bag and sweater and we’re back in business.

Two hours later the sea is back to normal and we’re in race mode, sailing into one of the most beautiful transatlantics ever: a smooth broad reach passage over

Karbonplatten schnell behoben. Pierre ist weiter nichts passiert; er bekommt einen neuen Schlafsack und Pullover und weiter geht’s.

Zwei Stunden später sind wir wieder in normalen Seegangsverhältnissen im Racemode und segeln in eines der schönsten Transats hinein: eine Raumschotsglitsche über 10 Tage einmal nördlich rund um das schon oft erwähnte Sankt-Helena-Hoch. Vollmond. Mäßige See. Großer Gennaker, 24 Knoten Speed, federleichtes Steuerverhalten und eine Freude, permanent das Beste herauszusegeln, den besten Winkel und Speed so tief wie möglich vor dem Wind, bei etwa 140 Grad Windwinkel.

Die Mannschaft versteht sich blendend. Nicht zuletzt, weil wir gut und heil durch den Sturm gekommen sind.

Der aufgestellte Rekord während dieser Regatta steht heute noch.

ROUTINE – GEFAHR DER NACHLÄSSIGKEIT Irgendetwas spürte ich an jenem Morgen vor dem Start in dem Café. Klar, wir sind bereit für eine harte Front.

Im Notfall reduzieren wir die Geschwindigkeit extrem und segeln nur unter dreifach gerefftem Groß. Wir haben ein großes, sehr seetüchtiges Schiff mit der besten Ausrüstung und Mannschaft. In unserer Routine hatten wir alle Risiken in den Hinterkopf geschoben und nicht weiter darüber nachgedacht. Doch in dem Moment, wo man aufhört Angst zu haben, kann es gefährlich werden. Die kleinste Nachlässigkeit kann auf See zur Katastrophe führen.

Ein Start zu einem Transat darf nie zur Routine werden. Nie dürfen wir vergessen, dass wir die Natur nicht ganz einschätzen oder gar kontrollieren können. Wir sind immer die Schwächeren da draußen. Der Start zu einem Transat ist ein Sprung ins Ungewisse, ein Abenteuer, egal wie viel Technik wir an Bord nehmen. Das ist ja auch der Grund der Faszination und warum so viele Freizeitsegler das machen wollen. Wobei die Freizeitsegler möglicherweise bisweilen noch die Intuition und das gesunde Gespür für das Ungewisse haben, die manchem Profi in einer Illusion aus Routine abhanden gekommen sein mag.

Meinen ersten, kleinen Absprung wagte ich mit 18 Jahren als Schüler, ich hatte noch keinen Führerschein und

The team is getting along fabulously, especially after having come through the storm in one piece.

The record set during this regatta stands to this day.

ROUTINE – THE DANGERS OF NEGLIGENCE I felt something that morning in the café before we started out. Naturally we’re prepared for a hard front. In an emergency we’ll reduce our speed drastically and sail under a triple-reefed main sail. We have a big, very seaworthy boat with the best equipment and a great team.

Wrapped up in our routine, we had put all this to the back of our minds and given it no further thought. But the moment you stop being afraid, you’re flirting with danger.

The slightest negligence at sea can lead to catastrophe.

The start of a transatlantic crossing must never become routine. We must never forget that we can never totally predict nature, let alone actually control it. We’re always the weaker ones out there. Starting a transatlantic is a leap in the dark and an adventure, no matter how much technology you have on board. This is also what makes it so fascinating, and why so many hobby sailors want to try it. Having said that, hobby sailors sometimes still have the intuition and a healthy sense of the uncertain that some professionals may have lost due to the illusion created by routine.

I took my first small leap as a schoolboy of 18 – I didn’t have a driving license yet and a friend had to drive me. I wanted to sail my parents’ yacht solo from Varel on the Jade Bight to Helgoland and back over the weekend. Even from today’s perspective a pretty ambitious sailing trip. I had studied the weather charts as though for a big regatta.

LONELY START IN FRANCE The first real leap came the following summer with my Mini Transat boat. Before this I’d never sailed alone
