“It was always a journey, a real journey. You left the sight of land. Then you could see it on the horizon. ‘Oh, there it is!’ And it would take all day, you probably had a flat tire. It was never easy.” —Patricia Anathan, lifelong summer resident whose parents first arrived in the 1930s

Nantucket Travel Guide

“There is something about Nantucket

that inspires people to embrace old traditions while trying new things. There isn’t a summer where I haven’t tried something new and felt like a kid all over again. Your relationships with everything—from your family and friends, to nature and yourself—feel deeper and more meaningful. These days my Nantucket happens to revolve around reconnecting with nature and its beauty, sporty competition, and simple wholesome pleasures with my kids and family, like sprinklers, strawberry picking, and ice-cream cones.”

—Jocelyn M. Gailliot, founder and CEO of Tuckernuck retailer

rom an outside perspective, Nantucket Style is often defined as the preppiest of the prep, setting the tone for that East Coast look that one can achieve only with money and success. However, despite the island’s nautical tropes and pastelflowered color-scheme, clothing essentials have changed over the years as a reflection of year-round island life, and an influx of new visitors. For many summer people, evenings are often devoted to family barbecues, dining at chic restaurants in town, charitable social events, or dinners at private clubs. In town on a summer evening, you can still see throwbacks to a bygone era. During high season, July and August, Nantucket Town is a flurry of color and print. People dress to impress, and nothing seems too over-the-top. In fact, it can be nearly impossible to find a spot where casual beach attire and flip-flops pass for evening wear. A few very-Nantucket looks can still be spotted: a straw hat, usually with grosgrain ribbon, from the Peter Beaton Hat Studio; a pastel cashmere poncho from Island Cashmere, and a Nantucket Friendship basket purse, sometimes even all at once.
