THE ORGAN OF SIGHT

THE RETINA

JOIN THE DASHES TO DISCOVER HOW THE ORGAN OF SIGHT IS MADE.

THE RETINA IS A FILM THAT COATS THE INNER WALL OF THE EYE. THIS FILM IS MADE UP OF CERTAIN TYPES OF CELLS (THE BRICKS FROM WHICH ALL LIVING ORGANISMS ARE MADE!), INCLUDING CONE CELLS AND ROD CELLS. WE WILL FIND OUT WHAT THESE CELLS ARE FOR, BUT NOW LET’S GET A BETTER LOOK AT HOW THEY’RE MADE.

Then, follow the paths in order to understand how the eye’s parts are made, seen from the outside and from the inside.

Fill in the drawing showing the cells of the retina: can you recognize the one cone cell you must color among the rods? Color it blue, and then color the rods gray. The color of the contour lines will guide you.

SEEING IN THE DARK

SEEING COLORS

WHOSE ARE THE SILHOUETTES THAT ARE FLYING IN THE STARRY SKY?

SORT THE TOWERS OF RED AND GREEN BRICKS ACCORDING TO THEIR INCREASING INTENSITY.

Find, recognize, and use a pencil to connect the silhouettes to each corresponding animal. Don’t let the other shadows confuse you!

Attach the brick stickers from lightest to darkest. The contours will guide you.

DID YOU KNOW THAT… Cone cells are the ones that take care of color vision!

DID YOU KNOW THAT… The rod cells are the photoreceptors that help us see in the dark!

THE JOURNEY OF SOUND

WHAT DO YOU HEAR?

FOLLOW THE PATH OF THE SOUND WAVES, LEADING THEM FROM THE EAR TO THE BRAIN.

ATTACH ON THE BRAIN THE STICKER OF THE SOUNDS THAT THE EAR TRANSMITS.

Use a red pencil for the left ear and a blue pencil for the right ear. Attach on the brain the sticker of the image that explains the perceived sound.

THE ORGAN OF SMELL

THE JOURNEY OF THE OLFACTORY PARTICLES

HOW DOES SMELL WORK?

Now, join the dashes to discover the path of the olfactory particles inside the organ of smell.

Take a cotton swab dipped in tempera and paint the dots: these are the molecules that carry odors inside our nose.

DID YOU KNOW THAT… The sense of smell allows us to identify the quality and intensity of the particles that fly in the air: in this way, we recognize the smells.

GET A COTTON SWAB AND SOME PINK TEMPERA.

Fill in the missing parts and reconstruct the figure. Let the silhouettes help you.

Fill in the series of dots on the tongue: these are the taste buds, which help us perceive flavors.

DID YOU KNOW THAT… Your mouth has many very important functions, such as ingesting and chewing food, breathing and speaking!

THE ORGAN OF TOUCH

THE THICKNESS OF THE SKIN

OUR SKIN IS THE MOST EXTERNAL COVERING OF OUR BODY, AND IS MADE UP OF THREE LAYERS: EPIDERMIS, DERMIS AND HYPODERMIS (OR SUBCUTIS).

OUR SKIN HAS A VARIABLE THICKNESS, DEPENDING ON BODY AREAS. IT GOES FROM 0.02 IN (0.5 MM) TO 0.08 IN (2 MM), AND IN ONE AREA IT IS AS THICK AS 0.15 IN (4 MM)!

Over time, wrinkles appear on the skin. Fill in the faces with stickers by adding freckles, wrinkles and spots. Then look in the mirror and draw yourself: what is your skin like?

Check out the thicknesses on the ruler! Now, put together the puzzle by adding the stickers with the missing pieces, and find out which part of the body has the thickest skin of all!
