on si esagera quando si afferma che Michelangelo Buonarroti (14751564) è il più grande artista di tutti i tempi, perché con le sue opere, ideate e realizzate in splendida solitudine – non tollerava aiuti, e quando li richiese li licenziò subito – e tra tormenti ed entusiasmi creativi, le arti belle, cioè la scultura e la pittura, toccarono vette mai più raggiunte per qualità formali e contenuti spirituali, per intensità rappresentativa e carica emotiva, per suggestioni di natura e sentimento umano, senza dimenticare che egli è stato anche un fecondo inventore di forme architettoniche. Tra le altre stelle dell’arte, Raffaello e Caravaggio sono, ad esempio, altrettanto sommi come pittori ma non si sono mai cimentati con la scultura, e lo stesso Leonardo, il genio dei geni, era sì per metà pittore parimenti, se non di più, valente, ma per l’altra metà era scienziato e filosofo non potendo quindi essere incasellato nella pura categoria degli artisti.

Con Michelangelo il Rinascimento perviene nell’arte all’apice, tanto che con la sua morte se ne fa spesso decretare la fine, perché si chiude un’epoca dominata dall’individuo che, facendo leva sulle sue forze, vuole conoscere e governare la realtà, e fa lo stesso che questa entità da dominare sia il mondo (come avviene per il filosofo e lo scienziato), la società (per il politico) o la materia (per l’artista).

It is no exaggeration to say that Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) is the greatest artist of all time, because with his works, conceived and executed in splendid solitude – he did not tolerate help, and when he asked for it he immediately dismissed it – and amidst creative torments and enthusiasms, the fine arts, namely sculpture and painting, reached unprecedented heights in terms of formal quality and spiritual content, representational intensity and emotional charge, and suggestions of nature and human feeling, without forgetting that he was also a fertile inventor of architectural forms. Among the other stars of art, Raphael and Caravaggio, for example, are equally great painters but have never tried their hand at sculpture, and Leonardo himself, the genius of geniuses, was half as good a painter, if not more so, but the other half was a scientist and philosopher and therefore could not be placed in the pure category of artists.

With Michelangelo the Renaissance reached its peak in art, so much so that with his death if it often causes its end to be decreed, because an era dominated by the individual comes to an end leverages its forces, wants to know and govern reality, and does the same that this entity to dominate is the world (as happens for the philosopher and the scientist), society (for the politician) or matter (for the artist).

i sono due piccole sculture accomunate dalla probabile data di esecuzione (tra il 1525 e il 1528) e dallo status attributivo non ancora definito e passato in giudicato, quantunque la tendenza pieghi più verso la proclamazione della paternità michelangiolesca che non verso il suo disconoscimento: i Due lottatori (o Ercole e Caco) di Casa Buonarroti a Firenze e il Ragazzo accovacciato del Museo dell’Ermitage di San Pietroburgo.

ti gestito dalla Chiesa di Roma (Clemente VII de’ Medici affidò a Baccio Bandinelli il blocco di marmo, terminato nel 1534 con l’attuale statua di Ercole e Caco) o dalla Repubblica, che nel 1528 tornò alla carica con il Nostro ricavandone nuovamente solo un secondo modello, il pezzo qui in oggetto. Questo è stato peraltro riferito a un gruppo scultoreo che doveva accompagnare la Vittoria nella Tomba di Giulio II e che è ricordato dal Vasari (1568), con però il titolo di Sansone e i Filistei (tre bronzi, tutti segnalati a New York, sarebbero copia di questo diverso soggetto sparito): incertezze che ne minerebbero per qualcuno l’assegnazione al maestro. La terracotta, ricostruita nel 1926 sulla base di disegni seicenteschi – prima era mancante delle due teste e di un braccio, frammenti per fortuna stivati nello stesso museo –, è uno dei pochissimi bozzetti scultorei di Michelangelo che possediamo (un altro esempio è il Dio fluviale, nella stessa sede) e ci permette di monitorare gli stadi del suo processo di lavoro, che prevedeva, prima di affrontare il marmo, lo studio e il perfezionamento dell’idea tramite disegni (tre sono all’Ashmolean di Oxford,al British Museum di Londra e nella stessa Casa Buonarroti) e campioni in creta.

Occorre menzionare, per identità di soggetto, anche un altro Ercole michelangiolesco perduto: quello risalente al 1492 circa, alto più di due metri ricordato dal Condivi (1553) e dal Vasari (1550 e 1568) in Palazzo Strozzi a Firenze e venduto nel 1529-1530 a Francesco I, che lo impiantò nei giardini di Fontainebleau, dove fu sgretolato nel 1713. Per averne un’idea la critica ha proposto un disegno del Louvre attribuito a Rubens, un modello (terracotta, altezza cm 49) di Casa Buonarroti, prima inteso come David, e un disegno di un architetto francese (Parigi, Musée du Petit Palais), datato

The terracotta, rebuilt in 1926 on the basis of seventeenth-century drawings (before it was missing the two heads and an arm, fortunately stowed in the same museum), is one of the very few sculptural sketches by Michelangelo that we have (another example is the River God in the same location) and allows us to monitor the stages of his work process, which included, before tackling marble, the study and improvement of the idea through drawings (three are at the Ashmolean in Oxford, at the British Museum in London and in the Casa Buonarroti itself ) and clay samples.

na torma di uomini e donne, per lo più nudi, che sgomitano per elemosinare qualche spicciolo di benevolenza dall’algido nobile passato da lì per caso: questa è la prima impressione che si ha varcando la soglia della Cappella Sistina e si guarda dietro al lontano altare; senonché a mano a mano che ci si appropinqua all’affresco, del colore del cielo ma anche dell’abisso marino, ci si accorge che si tratta dell’evento che fa tremare i piani bassi del mondo, quelli dell’umanità, di fronte al quale l’unico atteggiamento che si riesce ad assumere, come conviene dinanzi a un tribunale divino e come sarebbe consono di fronte a uno sterminio – poiché a questo, precorrendo la fatale sentenza, somiglia in effetti l’avvenimento in questione –, è inginocchiarsi, ciò che pare abbia fatto lo stesso papa Paolo III il giorno dello scoprimento, il 31 ottobre del 1541.
