In June 1966 the crew members of Apollo 1, NASA’s first manned mission of the Apollo program, practiced water egress procedures in a swimming pool at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston. The following January, Edward White, Roger Chaffee and Virgil “Gus” Grissom were killed during a launch simulation.

In a speech a few years earlier, Grissom had said: “We are in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us, it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life.”

SURFIN’ U.S.A.

If the term “Surfing Cowboys” has got you scratching your head – we didn’t make it up: there’s been a store with that name in California since 1995, currently located in Malibu. Among other things, they sell vintage boards like the one that had previously belonged to David Nuuhiwa. The Hawaiian surfer was one of the first real stars on the waves. The board, by the way, dates back to around 1970.

BLACK HOLE SUN

We would like to take a moment to remember Stephen Hawking – because the world is not the same without him. And because of his humor. He once said: “I can’t disguise myself with a wig and dark glasses – the wheelchair gives me away.” Still, we think the Miles Sun model from Brett would definitely have looked good on him.

There was one thing Terry O’Neill could never understand: how fellow photographers would stop working once they thought they’d captured the shot. Because, as he put it, “Photography is all about shooting and capturing a moment spontaneously, not worrying about what picture you have already taken.”

That must have been the case on this sunny day in the mid-1970s in Beverly Hills. Roger Moore, who was in the process of redefining the character of James Bond, did what you do when visiting the home of a mischievous fellow actor like Peter Sellers.

“If Jackie wants to say he knows Roman Polanski, Princess Grace and all those people, I couldn’t care less.”
DENNY HULME
Denny Hulme comes in second after Graham Hill at the Spanish Grand Prix. Hill had started sixth on the grid and worked his way to the top in an astonishing race.

MICHEL BABIN HAS WORKED AT THE HÔTEL DU CAP-EDEN-ROC ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA FOR FIFTY YEARS. AND AS HEAD DOORMAN OF THE FAMOUS HOTEL, HE HAS WELCOMED ALL THE GREATS IN SHOW BUSINESS: ROGER MOORE, CHARLES BRONSON, MADONNA . . . JUST TO NAME A FEW. BUT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IS THAT WHEN HE’S ASKED ABOUT HIS ENCOUNTERS, HE ALSO HAS SOMETHING TO SAY – UP TO A CERTAIN POINT, OF COURSE.

Favaron takes care not only of valuable vehicles but also speaks to the Germans’ eternal love for all things Italian – and for a bygone era.

Under the name Luciano Della Rosa, he recorded albums with titles like Pizza, Pasta e Amore and went on tour with German musicians like Frank Zander and Bernd Clüver.

My grandfather doesn’t use his turn signal because it’s “nobody’s business where I’m going”.

MEN’S MANUAL, THE SECOND

It was about time: fi ve years after the fi rst edition, here comes Men’s Style Manual No. 2. A fresh collage of topics, stories and things from the rampstyle universe. A book like a little aperitif. Or a piece of art. Perhaps both. In any case a very personal statement. Happily subjective, with clear ideas and strong opinions. And with its fair share of edges and quirks. In other words, unmistakably male.
