Made in Holland leidt u van het beroemde Delfts, via het kleurrijke Maastrichtse aardewerk en de zwierige art nouveau, naar de nieuwste creaties van Dutch Design. Nederland is een keramiekland. Delfts blauw is al eeuwen een icoon, maar ook Maastrichts boerenbont, Haags eierschaalporselein, Gouds plateel en het hedendaagse Dutch Design zijn over de hele wereld bekend. Ze worden als typisch Nederlands beschouwd. Het interessante is echter dat de oorsprong van deze keramiek vaak niet in Nederland ligt, maar daarbuiten. Nederlandse ontwerpers en makers namen technieken en stijlen over die hier door handel of door migratie van vaklieden werden geïntroduceerd. Zij maakten er iets geheel eigens van en veroverden daarmee op hun beurt de wereld. Dit Nederlandse succes begon 400 jaar geleden en is nog altijd onverminderd van kracht. Ter gelegenheid van Leeuwarden - Fryslân Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2018 brengt het honderdjarige Keramiekmuseum Princessehof met Made in Holland een ode aan dit wereldsucces van de Nederlandse keramiek.

Ter voorbereiding van de tentoonstelling zijn in opdracht van het museum nieuwe studies verricht naar de export van Nederlandse keramiek in de afgelopen vier eeuwen. Waar kwamen de producten terecht, door wie werden ze besteld, hoe werden ze gebruikt, hebben ze de buitenlandse keramiek beïnvloed?

De vele verrassende inzichten die uit dit onderzoek naar voren zijn gekomen, vormen de basis voor de tentoonstelling, maar vragen ook om een publicatie waarin de resultaten zijn vastgelegd en uitgediept.

On the occasion of Leeuwarden - Fryslân European Capital of Culture 2018, the century-old Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics is paying tribute to the global success of Dutch ceramics with the exhibition Made in Holland.

As part of the preparations for the exhibition, the museum commissioned new studies on the export of Dutch ceramics over the past four centuries.

Where did the products end up, who ordered them, how were they used, did they influence foreign ceramics? The many surprising insights that have emerged from this research form the basis for the exhibition, but also call for a publication in which the results are documented and examined.

Rond 1700 telde de stad Delft niet minder dan 32 plateelbakkerijen. Uit hun ovens kwam het Delfts aardewerk, dat zo beroemd was dat het in het Engels zelfs tot soortnaam is verheven: delftware. Van eenvoudige borden voor dagelijks gebruik tot spectaculaire bloemenhouders voor vorstelijk vertoon: het Delfts aardewerk was niet alleen in eigen land populair, het werd naar tal van landen geëxporteerd. Een even groot maar minder bekend succesverhaal is dat van de Nederlandse tegelbakkerijen. Ook hun producten werden in heel Europa en daarbuiten verkocht en aangebracht in paleizen en kerken, waar ze vaak tot op de dag van vandaag zijn te bewonderen.

Around 1700, the city of Delft had no less than 32 Delftware factories.

The pottery that came out of their kilns was so famous that it was even given a generic name in English: delftware. From simple plates for daily use to spectacular flower holders for royal display – Delftware was not only popular in the Netherlands; it was also exported to many countries.

An equally large but less well-known success story is that of the Dutch tile makers. Their products were also sold all over Europe and abroad and used in palaces and churches, where they can often still be admired today.

De oorsprong van het Delfts aardewerk ligt in Antwerpen. Rond 1507 vestigde de Italiaanse majolicabakker Guido di Savino zich in deze stad en begon er een eigen majolicabakkerij, Den Salm. Hiermee introduceerde hij vanuit Italië de tinglazuurtechniek* in Noordwest-Europa. Deze migratie is ons bekend dankzij de Italiaanse architect Cipriano Piccolpasso die er een opmerking over plaatste in zijn beroemde tractaat I Tre Libri dell’Arte del Vasaio (De drie boeken over de kunst van het pottenbakken), geschreven tussen 1548 en 1557 [2, 3].1 Guido Andries, zoals Di Savino zichzelf in Vlaanderen noemde, bouwde Den Salm uit tot een succesvolle onderneming.2 Het bedrijf leverde voornamelijk luxueuze vloertegels voor kastelen en kloosters. Ook werden apothekerspotten, siroopkannen en zalfpotten gemaakt.

Deze majolica* werd veelkleurig beschilderd met Italiaanse renaissancemotieven. Guido Andries overleed in 1541, maar zijn bedrijf werd voortgezet.

Vanuit Antwerpen trokken majolicabakkers naar andere gebieden in Europa; velen trokken naar de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Zo moet een anonieme majolicabakker al voor 1550 in Utrecht hebben gewerkt in het huis Oudaen aan de Oude Gracht [4].3 De grootste instroom aan Antwerpse emigranten vond echter plaats in de tweede helft van de zestiende eeuw, de roerige jaren van godsdiensttwisten, sociale onrust en oorlog met de Spanjaarden. Adriaen Bogaerts kwam in 1568 naar Haarlem, net als dertig jaar later Hans Bernaert Vierleger. Van zijn hand zijn veelkleurige tegeltableaus bekend [5]. Andere majolicabakkers kozen voor Amsterdam en Dordrecht.4 De eerste Antwerpse majolicabakker die zich in Delft vestigde was Hans de Windt. Hij kwam in 1594 en werd enige jaren later gevolgd door Pouwels Bourset in 1602. In 1609 kwamen nog Michiel Nouts, ‘tegelschilder komende van Antwerpen’, en Henrick vande Ryn, van wie wordt vermeld dat hij naar Delft vertrok wegens gebrek aan werk.5 Hieruit wordt duidelijk dat de Antwerpse majolicanijverheid in die tijd ten einde liep. De Noord-Nederlandse majolicaproductie kwam daarentegen juist tot grote bloei, met Haarlem als belangrijkste centrum. Majolica was niet langer een product voor de elite zoals in de tijd van Guido Andries, maar vond ook aftrek bij de lagere standen.

In dezelfde tijd kwam er een product op de markt dat grote invloed zou uitoefenen op de Nederlandse majolica. Dat was het Chinese blauw-witte porselein* dat de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) vanaf 1602 in grote hoeveelheden in Nederland importeerde. Dit grotendeels onbekende porselein was niet alleen afkomstig uit een ver en exotisch land, maar ook nog beschilderd met motieven en symbolen die voor een Nederlander niet te begrijpen waren [6]. Bovendien overtrof de dunheid en hardheid van het porse-

The origins of Delftware lie in Antwerp. Around 1507 the Italian majolica potter Guido di Savino settled in this city and started his own majolica factory, Den Salm. With this he introduced the tin-glaze technique* from Italy to Northwest Europe. We know about this migration thanks to the Italian architect Cipriano de Piccolpasso who commented on it in his famous treatise I Tre Libri dell’ Arte del Vasaio (The Three Books on the Potter’s Art), written between 1548 and 1557 [2, 3].1 Guido Andries, as Di Savino called himself in Flanders, built up Den Salm into a successful business.2 It mainly supplied luxurious floor tiles for castles and monasteries. The pottery also made apothecary jars, syrup jugs and ointment pots. This majolica* was painted with colourful Italian Renaissance motifs. Guido Andries died in 1541, but his business carried on.

From Antwerp, majolica potters migrated to other areas of Europe; many went to the Northern Netherlands. For example, an anonymous majolica potter must have worked in Utrecht before 1550 in the medieval Oudaen House on the Oude Gracht [4].3 However, the largest influx of emigrants from Antwerp occurred in the second half of the sixteenth century, the turbulent years of religious disputes, social unrest and war with the Spanish. Adriaen Bogaerts arrived in Haarlem in 1568, as did Hans Bernaert Vierleger 30 years later. He is known for his colourful tile panels [5]. Other majolica potters settled in Amsterdam and Dordrecht.4 Hans de Windt was the first majolica potter from Antwerp to settle in Delft. He arrived in 1594 and was followed a few years later by Pouwels Bourset in 1602. In 1609 came Michiel Nouts, ‘a tile painter hailing from Antwerp’, and Henrick vande Ryn, who is reported to have left for Delft because of a lack of work.5 From this it is clear that the Antwerp majolica industry was winding down at that time. On the other hand, majolica production in the Northern Netherlands was booming, with Haarlem as its main centre. Majolica was no longer a product for the elite as in the days of Guido Andries; it was also bought by the lower middle classes.

Around this time, a product came onto the market that would have a major influence on Dutch majolica.

This was the Chinese blue-and-white porcelain* that the Dutch East India Company (VOC) imported into the Netherlands in large quantities from 1602 onwards. This largely unknown porcelain was not only from a distant, exotic country, but was also painted with motifs and symbols that were incomprehensible to a Dutchman [6]. Moreover, the thinness and hardness of the porcelain surpassed everything that had previously been made in Europe. It is therefore no wonder that anyone who

3.1 Art nouveau uit ‘Holland’

In november 1900 wijdde het Algemeen Handelsblad een artikel aan de resultaten die Nederland in de voorbije maanden op de wereldtentoonstelling van Parijs had geboekt.1 De balans gaf in het algemeen weinig reden tot juichen. Op industrieel gebied hadden de meeste inzendingen niet veel voorgesteld en op de afdeling beeldende kunst was de presentatie weer te klein geweest om indruk te maken. ‘Het best is de verkoop nog gegaan op de Esplanade’, resumeerde het dagblad. ‘Niet alleen hebben de fabrieken van Rozenburg en de Delftsche groot succes gehad, ook alle andere plateelfabrieken hebben nagenoeg hare geheele inzending kunnen verkoopen.’

Hoe de inzending was samengesteld, wat de motieven van kopers waren geweest en waar de objecten zoal waren beland, maakte het bericht niet duidelijk.

Het gros van alle stukken verdween na afloop van de expo gewoon uit het zicht en daarmee bleef ook hun buitenlandse statuur sterk onderbelicht. Om meer inzicht te krijgen in de factoren die leidden tot het kassucces, wordt de keramiekinzending hier nader onder de loep genomen. Het momentum van 1900 wordt bovendien getoetst aan de eerstvolgende grote tentoonstellingen van Turijn in 1902 en St. Louis in 1904, waar Nederlandse aardewerkfabrikanten hun internationale waardering hoopten te prolongeren.

In November 1900, the Algemeen Handelsblad devoted an article to the results achieved by the Netherlands at the Paris world exhibition in recent months.1 In general, the balance sheet gave little reason to rejoice. In the area of industry, most of the entries had not been of great significance, and in the department of fine art the presentation had been too small to impress. ‘The best sales figures were achieved at the Esplanade’, the newspaper concluded.

‘Not only have the factories of Rozenburg and Delft had great success, all the other potteries have also managed to sell almost their entire entries.’

The article did not clarify the make-up of the entries, the buyers’ motives, or where the objects had ended up. The majority of all pieces simply disappeared after the exhibition ended, which meant that they remained underexposed internationally. In order to gain more insight into the factors that led to the successful sales, the ceramic entries are examined in more detail here. The momentum of 1900 is also measured against the major exhibitions that followed in Turin in 1902 and St. Louis in 1904, where Dutch pottery manufacturers hoped to prolong their international success.
