VIRGIL ABLOH IN MARCH of 2018, Virgil Abloh was named artistic director of menswear for Louis Vuitton. He was the fashion house’s first African American designer. Born in Rockford, Illinois in 1980, he came from immigrant parents who were from Ghana. His mother was a seamstress, while his dad worked for a company that made paint. His educational background is exceptional, after attending a Catholic high school, he went to University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He then went on to get his Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006. THE FINAL PROJECT that he did was to design a Chicago skyscraper that was arched towards Lake Michigan. While in college, he as a hobby, designed T-shirts and wrote on fashion and design for a blog, The Brilliance. It was around that time he met rapper Kanye West while working on his designs at a Chicago print shop. It was his work and collaboration with Kanya that caught the attention of Michael Burke, who was the CEO of Louis Vuitton at the time. In 2011 West asked him to serve as the artistic director for his 2011 collaborative album with Jay-Z Watch the Throne, earning the designer a Grammy nomination. That’s not something you think of a fashion designer earning, so that was a pretty revolutionary moment for Virgil. WHEN HE STARTED at Louis Vuitton, his premier show was at the Palais-Royal Gardens for Paris Fashion Week that same year. Some famous people walked in that first show for Virgil, including ASAP Rocky, Kid Cudi, and Steve Lacy. This show put Virgil in high demand for many people, including Rihanna and Serena Williams, who even wore one of his designs to the 2018 US Open in collaboration with Nike.

BLACKLISTING CUSTOMERS THIS ONE IS PARTICULARLY BAD about racial discrimination. In a lawsuit filed in 2024, Tracy Reneé Williams, her daughter Brandi Williams, and their friend Kristopher Enoch claimed that Louis Vuitton discriminated against them by falsely identifying them as drug dealers and refusing them entry to its store. This is despite the fact that they are high-spending customers and have frequently bought Louis Vuitton items without an issue. The lawsuit says that they were specifically treated differently than white customers. It’s called “shopping while Black.” Willaims claims she preordered and paid for roughly $50,000 worth of items from the Louis Vuitton store in Costa Mesa, but never received the items. When she went to a Beverly Hills store, Williams said she was told by a white manager that she was no longer welcome and would be arrested if she came back. She had also been through a similar incident in the Louis Vuitton store in New Orleans. All three of the woman are seeking monetary damages and want to be allowed to shop in any of the stores. Williams also posts on social media regularly reviewing the Louis Vuitton items she buys.

TEXAS RANCH DRAMA BEFORE LOUIS VUITTON OPENED up the Rochambeau Ranch in 2019, they had a couple of factories there that were temporary locations in 2017. The problem with these locations is that there was rumors of mistreatment of the employees. High end design houses all over the world are known for their less than stellar treatment of employees through the years. In looking at the Texas factories, some of the early employees said that the conditions there were “sweatshop like.” They even got the Texas Workplace Commission involved with a complaint. Some of the complaints were the heat without adequate air-conditioning and that the factory was surrounded by a chain link fence. This clearly was unacceptable since the factories that Louis Vuitton has in France are subjected to strict regulations about how they treat their employees. So they were able to make sure that the working conditions in Texas matched the better working conditions of their European counterparts. The working conditions especially improved when the new Rochambeau Ranch factory opened up. The good news was that once the factory had improved working conditions, it was truly a boon for the area as far as employment and prestige of working for such a historical company in the fashion world.

YAYOI KUSAMA
LOUIS VUITTON’S COLLABORATION with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is a celebrated fusion of fashion and contemporary art, marked by two significant partnerships. In 2012, Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama joined forces to create a collection that seamlessly blended the brand’s iconic designs with Kusama’s distinctive artistic vision. The collaboration featured handbags, clothing, and accessories adorned with Kusama’s signature polka dots and vibrant patterns. This partnership not only introduced Kusama’s art to a broader audience but also reinforced Louis Vuitton’s commitment to innovative and artistic collaborations. A decade later, in 2023, Louis Vuitton and Kusama reunited to launch a new collection that expanded upon their previous work. The 2023 collaboration introduced fresh designs, including handbags, clothing, and accessories, all embellished with Kusama’s iconic motifs. The collection was accompanied by a dynamic marketing campaign featuring life-sized automata painting yellow dots on Louis Vuitton store windows in major cities like Paris, London, and New York. This campaign generated significant buzz and underscored the enduring appeal of the collaboration.
RICHARD PRINCE
IN 2008, Louis Vuitton collaborated with American artist Richard Prince to create a provocative Spring/Summer collection that reimagined the brand’s iconic monogram. Prince’s designs featured watercolor effects and layered “Jokes” prints over the traditional LV pattern, resulting in a vibrant and contemporary aesthetic. Marc Jacobs initiated this famed collaboration with controversial artist and photographer. The pieces were inspired by cities after dark, where Richard used 17 hues of watercolor paint to turn each handbag into a vibrant canvas of blended colours.
