Ein Geleitwort für zwei Kataloge einer musealen Ausstellung schreiben zu dürfen, ist eine Freude. Und ein Geleitwort für eine Ausstellung von Künstlern zu schreiben, die Freunde geworden sind, erst recht. So verhält es sich mit David Czupryn und Jochen Mühlenbrink. Beide sind Träger des renommierten Internationalen Bergischen Kunstpreises, einer Auszeichnung, die das aktuelle Kunstschaffen im Bergischen Land durch die Auszeichnung professioneller Künstlerinnen und Künstler fördern soll und durch die NATIONAL-BANK bereitgestellt wird.

Mühlenbrink erhielt ihn – gemeinsam mit Leunora Salihu – im Jahr 2012, Czupryn folgte 2016. Während die Jury bei Jochen Mühlenbrink befand, es gelinge ihm, eine Fiktion der Realität zu schaffen, indem er Materialien male, die den Betrachter zu der Fehlannahme verleiteten, es handele sich um eben dieses und nicht um Malerei, urteilte sie bei David Czupryn, er thematisiere in seinen Bildern die Synthese von Natur und industriell hergestellten, künstlichen Materialien. Der Maler schaffe auf surreal anmutenden Gemälden fantastische Bildwelten, in denen menschliche Hybridformen neben inszenierten Stillleben existieren. Auf den ersten Blick würden die Arbeiten wie dreidimensionale Installationen wirken, bei denen die Materialität der Bildelemente wahrheitswidrig echt zu sein scheint.

Seit den Laudationes sowie den Übergaben der Preise habe ich beide Künstler regelmäßig besuchen dürfen. Ich hatte die Freude, nicht nur den Erfolg der jeweils ersten nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen erleben zu dürfen, sondern hatte auch das Privileg, in den Ateliers den einen oder anderen Schulterblick auf neue Arbeiten zu werfen. Es folgten Erwerbe für die NATIONAL-BANK Sammlung, die bis heute fortgesetzt worden sind. Aufgrund dieser gemeinsamen Wegstrecke war es für die NATIONAL-BANK eine Selbstverständlichkeit, diese Ausstellung, insbesondere aber die Veröffentlichung der beiden Kataloge, finanziell zu unterstützen. Auch wenn Jochen Mühlenbrink etwa mit Fragil – Bilder einer Ausstellung über eine wunderbare Dokumentation seiner Ausstellungen im Morat-Institut Freiburg und in der Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven verfügt und sich David Czupryn glücklich schätzt, mit dem großformatigen und aufgrund der außerordentlich guten Bildqualität ansprechenden Buch He / She / It, dem Titel seiner gleichnamigen Werkschau in der Kunsthalle Darmstadt, sein Eigen nennen zu können, haben Ausstellungskataloge gerade für junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler eine essentielle Bedeutung.

Sie ist die entscheidende Voraussetzung, ihr Schaffen zu dokumentieren und damit die Grundlage für weitere Erfolge, insbesondere im Umgang mit Museen, Galerien und Sammlern, zu legen. Im Rahmen eines gleichermaßen überzeugenden wie nachhaltigen kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Engagements ist es deshalb notwendig, neben Ankäufen gerade hier anzusetzen.

In einer Zeit erheblicher politischer, wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Veränderungen sind die Kunst und die Auseinandersetzung mit ihr wichtiger denn je. Die Kunst ist ein Spiegel unserer Gesellschaft und ihrer kulturellen Identität. Und diese Identität ist heterogen. Diese Vielfalt gilt es zu erhalten und zusammenzuhalten. Beides ist für ein funktionierendes

Es ist insofern sehr erfreulich, dass das Kunstmuseum Solingen mit dieser Ausstellung erneut den Beweis antritt, dass die Auslobung eines Kunstpreises eben nicht nur ein für sich stehendes, singuläres Ereignis ist, sondern ein planmäßig angelegter, integraler Bestandteil eines ganzheitlichen Umgangs mit der Kunst und der Förderung ihrer Protagonisten. Gepaart mit einem bemerkenswert kuratorischen Geschick fällt die Wahl auf zwei Künstler, die für den unbefangenen Betrachter nicht nur von ihrem Werk, sondern auch von ihrer Persönlichkeit unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten. Verbindendes Element ist – neben der Preisträgerschaft – die Malerei, eine Disziplin, die im Zeichen von Film, Foto und digitaler Kunst in besonderer Weise um Anerkennung kämpfen muss. Mein Freund Markus Lüpertz hat mehrfach darauf hingewiesen, dass es über die Jahrtausende in der Malerei letztlich schon alles einmal gegeben hat. Das ist ohne Zweifel zutreffend. Und dennoch lassen sich weder David Czupryn noch Jochen Mühlenbrink entmutigen. Sie gehen ihren Weg klar, kompromisslos und mit großer Distanz gegenüber dem stets wandlungsfähigen Mainstream, der mitunter Positionsbestimmungen von gestern kaum zu erinnern vermag. Ihr Studium an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und die Ausbildung ihrer Lehrer, Georg Herold, Lucy McKenzie und Tomma Abts, bei Czupryn und Lüpertz bei Mühlenbrink haben den Talenten das notwendige Rüstzeug vermittelt. Verbunden mit einer klaren charakterlichen Haltung, einem hohen Maß an Idealismus, gepaart mit dem Ziel, sich in der Gegenwartskunst durchzusetzen, haben sich die Erfolge eingestellt. Dabei geben beide Künstler einen Einblick in die Malerei der Gegenwart, die sich gleichermaßen nachdenklich und selbstbewusst bewegt, ohne ihre poetische Aussage zu verlieren.

Und je länger sich der unbefangene Betrachter mit beiden Künstlern beschäftigt, wird er feststellen, dass die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Arbeiten inhaltlich und gestalterisch wesentlich näher zueinanderstehen, als es auf den ersten Blick der Fall zu sein scheint. Es ist sowohl ein Paarals auch ein Gegenlauf. Ein Paarlauf ist es, weil es beiden Malern um die Täuschung des Betrachters geht. Bei David Czupryn ist es die Räumlichkeit sowohl als Sujet als auch die Räumlichkeit im Sinne des Trompe-l’œils.

Und bei Mühlenbrink ist es die Täuschung über die Realität. Der Versuch, den Betrachter zu einer Fehlvorstellung zu verleiten, ist somit ein Kernelement der Ausstellung. Es ist zugleich ein Reflex auf den Zustand unserer Gesellschaft, wie er für manche Bereiche symptomatisch ist. Das aufklärerische Postulat des sapere aude drängt sich folglich nicht nur bei dem Betrachten der Bilder auf. Gegenläufig sind die Arbeiten nur in der Wahl ihrer Gegenstände. Dabei neigt Czupryn zum Surrealismus, Mühlenbrink zum Realismus. Die Deckungsgleichheit der täuschenden Absicht und das Spannungsverhältnis unterschiedlicher Gestaltungsvarianten herausgearbeitet zu haben, ist – neben der Nachhaltigkeit der Präsentation der Künstler durch das Kunstmuseum Solingen – das große Verdienst dieser Ausstellung. Im Namen sowohl des Vorstandes als auch aller Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der NATIONAL-BANK wünsche ich dieser Werkschau deshalb eine große Anerkennung von Publikum und Medien.

Die Ausstellung David Czupryn und Jochen Mühlenbrink ist es wert.

It is a delight to be able to write a foreword for two catalogs of a museum exhibition. And it is even more of a pleasure to write a foreword for an exhibition by artists who have become friends. And this is what I have before me with David Czupryn and Jochen Mühlenbrink. Both have been granted the renowned International Bergische Kunstpreis – an award that aims to promote contemporary artistic practice in Bergisches Land by honoring professional artists. It is supported by the NATIONAL-BANK. Mühlenbrink received it – alongside Leunora Salihu – in 2012, with Czupryn following in 2016. While the jury found that Jochen Mühlenbrink was able to create a fictional reality via painting materials that induce the viewer to the misconception they are seeing not painting but that very material, it found that David Czupryn’s paintings address a synthesis of nature and industrially produced artificial materials. As a painter, he creates fantastic visual worlds in surreal-seeming images, with human hybrid forms existing alongside staged still lifes. His works appear at first glance to be threedimensional installations in which the materiality of the image elements seems implausibly authentic.

I have visited both artists regularly since the eulogies and the presentation of the prizes. I have had the pleasure not only of experiencing the success of their first national and international exhibitions but also the privilege of being able to catch a glimpse here and there of new works in the studio. This was followed by acquisitions for the NATIONAL-BANK collection – something which continues to this day. Given this shared path, it was natural for NATIONAL-BANK to provide financial support for this exhibition and especially for the publication of the two catalogues. Even if Jochen Mühlenbrink’s exhibitions at Morat-Institut Freiburg and Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven have been wonderfully documented with a book like Fragil – Bilder einer Ausstellung and David Czupryn considers himself lucky to be able to name as his own the large-format book He/She/It, which shares its name with his eponymous exhibition at Kunsthalle Darmstadt and in which the images are rendered in extraordinary quality, exhibition catalogues remain of essential importance, especially for young artists. They are the most vital cog in the documentation of their work and thus lay the foundation for further success, especially when it comes to dealing with museums, galleries, and collectors. As part of any serious and sustainable cultural and social commitment, it is thus necessary – alongside purchases – to start here.

In a time of major political, economic, and social change, art and the study thereof are more vital than ever. Art holds a mirror up to our society and its cultural identity. And this identity is heterogeneous. This diversity must be preserved and kept together. Both of these are indispensable to a functioning community. The same is true for the sustainability of support for the arts. It is therefore an amazing delight that with this exhibition, Kunstmuseum Solingen is once again demonstrating that the granting of an art award is not only a singular event in its own right – it is a planned and integral part of a holistic approach to art and the support of those involved in it. Paired together with remarkable curatorial skill, the choice fell upon two artists who to the untrained eye could hardly be more different, in terms both of their work but also their personalities. The unifying factor – alongside the fact that they are both award recipients – is painting. A discipline that is entitled in its unique way to battle for recognition under the banner of film, photography, and digital art. My friend Markus Lüpertz has remarked repeatedly that over the millennia, everything in painting has ultimately already existed at least once. This is undoubtedly true. And yet neither David Czupryn nor Jochen Mühlenbrink allow themselves to be discouraged. They clearly and uncompromisingly follow their own paths, with real distance between them and the ever-changing mainstream that can so often hardly recall the positions it took yesterday. Studying at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under their teachers – Georg Herold, Lucy McKenzie, and Tomma Abts for Czupryn, and Lüpertz for Mühlenbrink – has given their talents the necessary tools. Combined with a clear, characteristic attitude, a large degree of idealism, and the goal of asserting themselves in contemporary art, they have achieved success. Along the way, both artists have provided insight into contemporary painting, which moves in a way that is thoughtful and confident without ever losing its poetic message.

And the more an unbiased viewer engages with both artists, the more they will see that the works presented in this exhibition are much closer to each other in terms of content and style than they appear to be at first glance.

They move both solo and in tandem. In tandem, as both painters are concerned with deceiving the viewer: for David Czupryn, it is spatiality as subject and the spatiality of the trompe-l’œil. And it is with Mühlenbrink an illusion of reality. The attempt to delude the viewer into a misconception is thus a key element of the exhibition. At the same time, it is a reaction to the state of our society – a state that is symptomatic in many areas.

The sapere aude proposition of the Enlightenment thus doesn’t only push itself to the fore when it comes to looking at the images. The works are contrarian only in their choice of subject. Czupryn tends toward surrealism, Mühlenbrink toward realism. Alongside the long-term presentation of these artists by Kunstmuseum Solingen, the great success of this exhibition is to have identified the similarities of the illusory intentions behind their differing compositional forms. In the name both of the Board of Directors and the entire staff of NATIONAL-BANK, I hope dearly that the David Czupryn und Jochen Mühlenbrink exhibition recieves both from the public and the media the recognition it so richly deserves.

Jochen Mühlenbrink’s painting has two main focal points, which actually lie far apart but are now regularly combined. Early on, he displayed an interest in interiors with the portentous emptiness of Pittura Metaphisica, as later washed out by Hopper in accordance with the vacuous, sanitized superficiality of the American way of life. This is seen in pictures like Studio Window (2019), Pauls (2009–19), or the early Sin Las Meninas (2009).

Mühlenbrink’s interiors are brighter, less ambivalent perhaps, but above all, in contrast to De Chirico or Hopper, it is hard to make semantic links to subjectivity or an awareness of history – not least, and this is surely no coincidence, because figures no longer play any real part in his work.

The other focus is his obvious passion for trompe-l’oeil, which he has been celebrating for some years now. The starting point for this strand within his oeuvre, which has gradually become entwined with all others, is BEA, Triptych II (2013), which uses an ingenious combination of painting and architecture to create the illusion of packaged canvases stacked against the wall. Especially striking here are the strips of brown tape – or, to be more precise, the painted simulations of strips of tape. This uses the typical move-along-nothing-to-see-here rhetoric of trompe-l’oeil, seeking not to persuade but to deceive with the intended congruence between the picture and what it depicts.

It would be easy enough to describe Mühlenbrink’s painting, especially since 2013, as trompe-l’oeil suppressing three-dimensional space. But the term “trompe-l’oeil” tends to obscure more than it explains, added to which the illusion of three-dimensional depth actually plays a decisive role in these works. Especially as it only rarely occurs. One need only consider Tape Over, Las Meninas (2019), one of the recent works that pass for classical trompe-l’oeil. Here, unlike in the pictures of tape on white backgrounds, the tape strips cover a picture. One could claim that the tape actually creates the pictoriality of the underlying surface, which might have remained unclear thanks to technically outstanding illusionism.

All we know is that the tape is stuck to the picture (an utterly untrue statement, incidentally, but such cognitive slippage is precisely what makes trompe-l’oeil interesting), while the picture remains largely hidden from us. This work refers to Velázquez’s iconic Las Meninas, and above all to Mühlenbrink’s earlier reference to it in Sin Las Meninas (2009). As the title makes clear, the picture omits the many figures whose symbolic and compositional arrangements give Velazquez’s picture its special charm. The original’s status as a meta-picture that constantly speaks about its own mode of representation, questioning the meaning of interpretation in general and reflecting on the possibilities and limits of showing and viewing,

derives from the constellation of figures. In spite of this, Mühlenbrink’s gesture is not a reinterpretation, as his Sin Las Meninas follows Foucault’s interpretation of Las Meninas as nothing less than an attempt to portray representation in its pure form and thus the absence of the subject. In Foucault’s view, the picture aims to portray an “essential void,” an unoccupied space that is referred to in the picture but that must be thought of outside it. Viewed against this backdrop, Sin Las Meninas appears as an exaggerated rendering of Foucault’s reading.

Beside the essential void, which was to remain a theme for the artist, another quality of this earlier painting that makes it interesting as the starting point for a discussion of Mühlenbrink’s recent works is the presence of illusion-breaking moments on its surface: clearly visible spattering and a number of diagonal lines rising from right to left in the layers of paint.

Without wanting to tie all this together, it is worth noting the conspicuous accentuation of the surface, which could be said to work against the perspectival illusionism of the original (more alluded to than recreated by Mühlenbrink). In this early work, then, the program of a tension between two- and three-dimensionality is already encapsulated – a tension into which windows were subsequently often inserted as mediating vehicles.

For the viewer, this program translates to a mobile mode of reception alternating between viewing the picture at close quarters and at a distance: up close, the three-dimensional space seen from a distance closes down in favor of a marked flatness. Tape Over, Las Meninas responds to this by taping over all subjects of representation in the picture – and creating an essential void – while the established mode of reception is preserved, although with a slight shift. Because looking at this picture, as with all of the artist’s tape pictures, the viewer responds in a way that is typical for trompe-l’oeil works. While the painter delights in deceiving with a perfect illusion, as viewers we derive pleasure from causing the edifice of this illusion to collapse by getting as close as possible and viewing it from angles that neutralize its effects. Admittedly, the strips of tape are genuinely hard to identify as painted, making them a “success” in terms of the logic of deception. The viewer, moving towards the canvas, no longer experiences the pivotal moment when the trompe-l’oeil is revealed as illusion. Pictures like Jalousie (2019) and Look Through II (2019) are a howl of triumph of painterly craft, whose imitation of reality can barely be identified as such. In themselves, they mainly raise the question of whether this is even painting. Interestingly, the essential void is present in exaggerated form once again, since both pictures evoke a closed or empty window. This may represent a suppression of three-dimensional space, but as the titles suggest it is absent rather than suspended. This is even more true of Jalousie, as it may be considered in formal terms as a strong quotation of Tape Over, Las Meninas. By introducing threedimensionality, a picture like Studio Window (2019) has greater surface tension because the trompe-l’oeil sits both on the canvas and on the chiaroscuro of a studio wall – depending on how close or far away one stands. However cleanly the illusionistic techniques are executed here, they remain fragile due to the picture’s set-up, as any difference in the way the daylight falls immediately unmasks the deception.
