BIG EMOTIONS People often come to her in response to a major event in their lives: an engagement, a wedding, a birth, a death… It is as though jewellery is irrevocably attached to the most important moments of our lives and has an almost ritual significance. ‘Just this week, I had four Americans visit. Ten years ago, I had made a necklace for the mother of this family. She was a horsewoman and was killed falling from her horse. She had worn the necklace every day. So it was impossible for the three daughters to split this necklace. They came here especially to have the same chain made for each of them, each in a different coloured gold but identical to that of their mother’, explains Iris. This is only one of the many stories that she can tell about the pieces she makes and the people she meets as a result. It is unsurprising then that the ritual power of jewellery forms the subject of a piece. Touche pas aux fleurs!, commissioned by the Sterckshof Silver Museum, is a wall object full of symbolism. There are references to the four elements: earth, air, water and fire. Inspired by Flemish tapestries, Iris also pays tribute to the tradition of passing down jewellery from generation to generation, from mother to daughter to granddaughter or son. With each new generation, the jewellery acquires additional layers of sentimental meaning and value. Touche pas aux fleurs! can be used in the same way: as a bridal piece for a marriage, for the birth of a child, an engagement or a funeral.
FORMS AND MATERIALS The Sterckshof commission in 2008 was a turning point in Iris’ career. It was a gratifying recognition of her work that made all the blood, sweat and tears of the early years worthwhile. It also consolidated the floral theme in her work,
