SPLIT-SECONDS CHRONOGRAPHS - Ref. 5959P Ref. 5959P Geneva, May 10, 2009 A rare and exceptionally fine platinum split-seconds chronograph wristwatch Ref. 5959P MVT 3637015 Case 4353655 Split-seconds chronographs Circa 2007
Extremely mechanically complex, the split-seconds chronograph is considered one of the three most challenging complications in the art of watchmaking and is consequently one of the most celebrated by collectors. With its “Officer” style case, white dial and special italicised Arabic numerals, the Patek Philippe ref.5959P harks back to the 1920s, a period when many historically important complication watches were made by this celebrated Swiss manufacturer. Launched in 2005, the reference 5959 uses the company’s first fully ‘in house’ chronograph calibre (CHR 27-525PS). The 252 movement parts are confined to a record breaking size for this complication of just 27.3mm in diameter and a thickness of 5.25mm, thereby making it the thinnest column-wheel controlled split-seconds chronograph ever made.

Patek Philippe launched the Ref. 5951 at the Basel Fair in 2010 with an exclusive first year offering with red accents to the dial and baton indexes. The movement is designed based on caliber CHR 27-525 PS, the thinnest column-wheelcontrolled split seconds chronograph movement and boasts the addition of a perpetual calendar module that adds a mere 2.05 mm in height, adding up to an overall height of just 7.3 mm, making it the thinnest rattrapante chronograph with perpetual calendar ever crafted by Patek Philippe. The caliber CHR 27-525 PS Q is exclusively hand-crafted, one-by-one, due to its extreme complexity. The design of the dial is both sporty and contemporary, which was completely new for Patek Philippe watches. The cushion-form case is reminiscent of the manufacture’s first split-seconds chronograph with art-deco design which dates back to the 1920s.

MINUTE REPEATING PERPETUAL SEMI SKELETONIZED - Ref. 5103 - Ref. 5104
This unique wristwatch carries the reference number 5103. Manufactured in 2004, it almost certainly served as the prototype for the 5104 which carries the same series of mechanical complications, yet was not introduced until 2007. The 5103 displays the true artistry of Patek Philippe, combining two of the most ingenious horological complications, that of minute repetition and perpetual calendar. Almost all perpetual calendar watches hide the intricate, precision engineered parts vital for their function under the dial upon which its mechanism will register the correct date – regardless of days in the month or leap years. The application of a perpetual calendar display to a transparent dial presents a number of difficulties, not least the design of calibrations which are legible yet unobtrusive. The most natural solution is the incorporation of crystal discs, yet these in themselves present issues for the watchmaker since fitting metal pinions to moving crystal discs is far from standard procedure. Naturally, such complexities are perfectly dealt with by the watchmakers at Patek Philippe. In order to ensure the text for the months, days and leap year are as unobtrusive as possible, these calibrations are rendered in white; a crystal disc, upon which a black ‘flag’ is printed, rotates behind these calibrations highlighting the relevant day, month and leap year. The date is presented in a retrograde arc on a blue ring at the edge of the dial. The unique platinum case features a band that is decoratively engraved with a modified lotus bud motif.

SPLIT-SECONDS CHRONOGRAPHS
This timepiece is not only the world’s earliest known split-seconds chronograph born as a wristwatch by any maker, but furthermore is considered the prototype for the split-seconds chronograph category. A combination that shows it as, not only of great importance within the history of Patek Philippe, but also within the development of this genre as a whole. It should also be noted that this timepiece is one of the earliest complicated wristwatches ever made by Patek Philippe. One of the most interesting features of this watch is the 60-minute register, which is highly unusual. Patek Philippe chronograph minute registers are usually only calibrated to 30 minutes - indeed, our research suggests that this is the only vintage Patek Philippe wristwatch chronograph to have such a calibration. This wristwatch features an “Officer” style case with straight, screw-set lugs and rounded, hinged, four-piece case. This was one of the earliest wristwatch case designs to be used by Patek Philippe and is complimented by the use of a white enamel dial.
