The Art Renewal Center is pleased to present the winners and finalists of the 14th International ARC Salon Competition! This year the ARC received over 4,300 entries from 73 countries. Our finalists represented here today constitute approximately 35% of works submitted, just over 1500 works. ARC has acquired 16 new works for the ARC collection, valued at over $125,000. Our highest award, Best in Show, went to Gregory Mortenson, for his Figurative entry of Standing Proud, where Mortenson depicts a young girl he met while working on a humanities project in Haiti. About the work, Mortenson said, “This young girl is growing up in an orphanage in Haiti. She has survived an earthquake and a hurricane and is still standing proud.” With her feet firmly planted on rocky soil, this contemporary depiction of human strength meets the viewer eye to eye. Annie Murphy-Robinson’s drawing of Casey, Adapt has won the Bouguereau Award, our second highest award in this year’s competition. Robinson also won First Place Drawing with her work of Emily and the Ram, Conjuring as well as Third Place Drawing and an ARC Purchase Award for her work of Casey, Waiting. It should also be mentioned that Daniel Keys was another big award winner this year winning First Place Still Life, Third Place Figurative and Honorable Mentions in both Landscape and the Fully From Life categories. We are now in the process of selecting our approximate 100 works for the live traveling version of the ARC Salon. We are extremely pleased to announce that we will be formally presenting the 14th ARC Salon Exhibition at Sotheby’s New York City location! Sotheby’s NY is the premier destination for auction and private sales. We are thrilled to be showing at this prestigious venue, which will undoubtably showcase the 21st century Representational Art Movement to an elite audience of collectors and art enthusiasts. The show is scheduled to first open at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Spain from December 6th, 2019 – February 2nd, 2020, where it will hang alongside the MEAM’s representational painting and sculpture competition, Figurativas. A joint award ceremony will be held on December 6th at the MEAM. This awe-inspiring international event will have artists from all over the world and hundreds of people in attendance, showcasing the true international nature and collaborative spirit of this new wave in contemporary art. The show will then travel to Sotheby’s, NY where it will be on exhibit from July 17th – July 27th, 2020 with our Grand Public Opening on Saturday, July 18th from 11am – 3pm. We will be announcing which works will join the exhibition throughout the planning process. The exhibition is organized to highlight all 11 categories, giving preference to winners and honorable mentions and some finalists based on availability of works. Updates and additional information about the live exhibition of the ARC Salon can be found on the Live Exhibition page. For the first seven days the results are live on the ARC website, July 1st – July 8th, we held an election for our second ever People’s Choice Award! Visitors to the ARC website were able to vote for up to 10 of their favorite finalist or winning works. The winner received $1,000 cash and a full page in the ARC Salon Catalog to be published by ACC Art Books, a division of a global publisher. Visitors could navigate to the People’s Choice Award section on the ARC Salon results pages and click on the vote button below the works of their choice to cast their votes. Visitors were prompted to log in or create a free account so that we could track votes and prevent users from voting more than once. The winner, Aliakbar Beigi’s Kindness, was revealed on July 12th, 2019. This year the winner of the Da Vinci Initiative Category, our category dedicated to works created by students 12 to 19 years of age, went to Celia Liberace, for her drawing of Forager. We are inspired to see this work with advanced technical skills created by an 18-year-old student, proving that high-school aged students are capable of learning these skill-based techniques and incorporating them into unique images with a unique voice. In addition, we have awarded Second and Third Place and eight Honorable Mentions in this category. We will be including a few of these amazing works by our artistic youth in the traveling 14th ARC Salon Exhibition.

We have two museum awards, a Purchase Award given out by the MEAM Museum in Barcelona, Spain, which went to Karolis Greiciunas for his drawing of Old Days… (this drawing has also won Second Place Portraiture), and an exhibition award given out by the Springville Museum of Art, which went to Ryan Brown. The Springville Museum has devoted a “Featured ARC Artist” gallery wall to their museum in their Founders Gallery, to be awarded to a new artist each ARC Salon Competition. Brown will have the opportunity to have a series of works hung at this prestigious location for the duration of this time period. We are also excited to be having our second partnership with Fashion Week San Diego, where FWSD designers will be matched with the 8 winning artists’ work and the designers will create an original couture outfit and look inspired by the work of art from the ARC Salon. After the first successful event at FWSD in San Diego last October, 2018 we decided we wanted to bring this event to NY while the ARC Salon Exhibition as a whole was on view. The ARC Salon winning works along with the specially designed garments will be on display with live models at Sotheby’s NY on July 25th. In addition, that day guests/attendees will be able to ‘vote’ for their favorite piece and pairing. Winners will be announced the following day and additional awards will be given to the ‘team’/‘individual’ at that time. This will be an opportunity to promote Contemporary Realism to an audience who might not have seen it otherwise and to expose the Representational Art Movement to top fashion designers attending the event. Also, five magazines, Fine Art Connoisseur, PleinAir magazine, PoetsArtists magazine, Enchanted Living magazine and Collections magazine, have given out a total of 11 awards to artists, and they will be featured in articles in each of these prominent publications. The International Arts and Culture Group (TIAC), an ARC Allied Organization®, has participated in the ARC Salon this year by awarding two $1,000 prizes to Odette, a collaborative sculpture by Coderch & Malavia, and to Zoe Frank for her painting of Wedding. We will also be working with Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Haynes Galleries, and American Legacy Fine Arts Gallery to mount an exhibition and sale at each of these influential establishments for artists chosen by these galleries from ARC Salon Finalists. These shows will be held in 2019 or early 2020. View the Other Awards page to learn more about each of these shows. We have also for the first year worked with Windows to the Divine®, who has awarded five artists a spot in their upcoming show entitled Contemporary Visions of Beauty, which will be held at SPACE Gallery in Denver, with the Opening Gala scheduled for Thursday, November 12th, 2020, with educational programming on Friday and Saturday, November 13th – 14th. Through their national network of collectors, known as Collectors for Connoisseurship, they are known to have a large patron base, and placement in the Windows to the Divine Exhibition will guarantee that many collectors are exposed to the artist and their work. A big thank you goes out to our 18 main category ARC Salon jurors this year, who have donated their time and efforts in selecting in addition to Best in Show, the First, Second, and Third Place awards in our 11 categories (Figurative, Portraiture, Imaginative Realism, Drawing, Sculpture, Landscape, Plein Air Painting, Still Life, Animals, Fully From Life and the Da Vinci Initiative Category), as well as our special awards for Most Ambitious Work, Best Nude, Best Social Commentary, Best Trompe l’Oeil, and our Dual Category Awards. We would also like to thank an additional group of over 25 jurors who were involved in selecting awards given out by partnering organizations. The 14th ARC Competition has been a combined effort of over 40 jurors, the incredible ARC Staff and all of our participating artists. We can’t thank everyone enough for helping to make this international competition a great success. A special Congratulations is due to all of our winners and finalists! We will be accepting entries for the next, 15th International ARC Salon Competition from April 1st through August 14th, 2020.

“Standing Proud” 2018 – Oil on canvas

In 2010 Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake. An orphanage was relocated to the countryside after their building crumbled. They were living in tents in a cow pasture. A small group of my childhood friends were able to visit the orphanage and in a small way, help with the rebuild and fundraising. I returned years later to teach art classes to the children.

This young girl was among the children at the orphanage. She has endured hardship, earthquakes, and hurricanes, yet somehow, she has held on to the innocence and joy of childhood. She is beautiful. She is Haitian. She is proud.

Other ARC Salon Awards PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD For the first eight days after the ARC Salon Competition results were posted to the ARC website, we asked our viewership to vote for their favorite works. Each visitor was able to vote for up to ten works but could only vote once for any given work. 6,194 votes were cast by 3,241 individual voters. The winner received 974 votes. ARC PURCHASE AWARDS ARC Purchase Awards go into the Art Renewal Center’s growing collection of works. This year the ARC has purchased works with a combined valued of over $125,000! The intent of the ARC Purchase Awards is to provide support to some of the most talented artists of the 21st century and to amass a large collection of the best of the 21st Century Representational Art Movement in order to protect it for future generations. ARC Purchase Awards are given at the sole discretion of ARC’s Chairman, Frederick C. Ross and Co-Chair / Chief Operating Officer, Kara Lysandra Ross. (Retail prices are shown.) MEAM PURCHASE AWARD The MEAM (Museum of European Art Modern) is a museum dedicated to contemporary realism located at the Gomis Palace, in the middle of the streets of the Born in Barcelona, a neighborhood where culture is always present and reflects the charm of the old part of the city, an area that knows how to mix tradition and modernity, becoming a required visit for the tourists interested in Monumental Barcelona. The museum has selected a work from this year’s ARC Salon Competition to be added to the museum’s permanent collection. This purchase award will be displayed in the European Museum of Modern Art on public view, and therefore will always be exhibited during the months this collection is open. This award was selected by the MEAM.

Adaption is about survival, the secret to life. Ancient, sacred lore is filled with stories of the coyote as a magical trickster. Tricksters can tap into the animal deep inside and become whatever the situation needs. Casey, an adolescent girl, inherently lives in that magical space between youth and adulthood, between play and responsibility, between enchantment and reality. The yielding fur of the coyote molds to her

frame. She seems convinced that she is able to control it, command it, that she can dominate. The image questions, is it a trick? In this magic space of adolescence she is torn between the irresistible draw of youth and the magnetic pull of adulthood and with it, the promise of freedom. Always looming, the trickster coyote waits to find out who has been tricked this time.

FINE ART CONNOISSEUR MAGAZINE AWARD The winning artist will be awarded an article in the prestigious art magazine Fine Art Connoisseur that will be seen by tens of thousands of art collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. In addition, Fine Art Connoisseur will publish an article highlighting some of the winners of the 14th International Salon, just as it has highlighted winners for the past five years. Fine Art Connoisseur serves art collectors and enthusiasts with innovative articles about representational paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. The magazine, produced by Streamline Publishing, has developed a particularly strong reputation for its editorial coverage of realism, a field of artistic excellence generally overlooked by other periodicals.

The Fine Art Connoisseur Award was chosen by the magazine’s Editor, Peter Trippi, and Publisher, Eric Rhoads. PLEINAIR MAGAZINE AWARD One artist who paints en plein air has been chosen for a feature article about their artwork in PleinAir Magazine, which is the best-selling art magazine in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide. Painting from nature out-of-doors, en plein air, and painting from life are the foundation of much of painting throughout the history of art. Today tens of thousands of artists and collectors have joined a new plein air movement, which you can follow in PleinAir, published by Streamline Publishing. This award was selected by the magazine’s Editor-inChief, Kelly Kane, and Publisher, Eric Rhoads. COLLECTIONS MAGAZINE AWARD This year Collections magazine has selected five artists to each receive a featured article. Collections magazine, founded in 1993, has published 252 monthly issues and has the highest reputation in art collection and art marketing in China. Collections magazine was named China’s most influential journal in 60 years and was three times nominated for the Journal Award. This award was selected by the magazine’s Editor-inChief, Yinglun Ji. ENCHANTED LIVING MAGAZINE AWARD Enchanted Living, formally known as Faerie Magazine, is a quarterly print magazine that celebrates all things enchanted – from a scattering of mushrooms in an ancient forest to a sweet, scented gown made only of roses. The New York Times described it this way: “It’s as though Martha Stewart’s Living and Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene had a magazine baby.” Founded by artist and visionary Kim Cross in 2005 and helmed by novelist Carolyn Turgeon since 2013, the magazine is a feast for the senses. Every issue features exquisite photography, recipes, original fiction and poetry, travel pieces, artist profiles, home decor, otherworldly beauty tips, craft tutorials, and much more – with a dash of enchantment sprinkled throughout. The publication reaches readers not only in its print and digital editions (including through the Faerie Mag app) but also through its massive social media platforms, with 1.6 million fans on Facebook, 167,000 on Instagram, and 80,000 subscribers to its weekly newsletter. This publication award was given to three artists whose work was entered in the Imaginative Realism Category and captures a love of fantasy and creativity. Their work will be featured in an upcoming article in Enchanted Living magazine. This award was selected by the magazine’s Editor-inChief, Carolyn Turgeon.

Other ARC Salon Awards POETSARTISTS MAGAZINE AWARD This year PoetsArtists magazine has selected an artist to receive a several page spread about their work and a writeup and/or interview by Lorena Kloosterboer, one of the magazine’s main writers. The winning work will also be featured on the issue’s cover. PoetsArtists is a platform uniting artists, authors, art collectors, galleries and other art affiliated members. Their mission is to ignite creativity and connect an already strong community with further artistic and literary opportunities. They publish issues 8 to 12 times a year focusing on Contemporary Figurative Realism, Portraiture, and Poetry. This award was selected by Lorena Kloosterboer. SPRINGVILLE MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITION AWARD The Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah, has added an ongoing award to the ARC Salon Competition, devoting a “Featured ARC Artist” gallery wall to their museum in their Founders Gallery. This year the museum has selected Ryan Brown, from the state of Utah, to be featured at the museum over the course of the following year. The Springville Museum of Art is Utah’s first museum for the visual fine arts, dedicated as a “Sanctuary of Beauty and a Temple of Contemplation”. The Museum houses over 2,500 works. Utah art, 20th century Soviet Realist art and American art, comprise the Museum’s permanent collection. With over 15 exhibitions annually, the Museum is a key promoter and contributor to the arts in Utah. Artwork is displayed

Other ARC Salon Awards throughout 29 galleries in this 45,000 square foot facility and a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden. The Museum seeks to fulfill its mission by refining minds and building character through the fine arts. As official State Wide Art Partnership (SWAP) headquarters, the Museum is home for visual art educational outreach programs to the schools of Utah. A variety of exhibitions, concerts, programs and special events are offered throughout the year. This award was selected by the Museum’s Director, Rita Wright, and Senior Staff of the Springville Museum of Art. REHS CONTEMPORARY GALLERIES, INC. AWARD Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Inc., New York City, NY has selected seven artists for a group exhibition and sale to be held at their gallery on 57th Street in the spring of 2020. We are excited to announce that this show will focus on birds, in collaboration with the American Bird Conservancy (ABC). A portion of the sales from the exhibit will go as a donation to the ABC and more broadly, help raise awareness for the preservation and protection of our feathered friends. Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Inc. began as a new venture stemming from Rehs Galleries, Inc., which specializes in 19th and early 20th century European works of art. Following in suit with the art world they know best, Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Inc., represents contemporary artists that create original works in a traditional style; works that demonstrate an artist’s superior technical skills and classical training. This award was selected by Rehs Contemporary Galleries in coordination with the ARC. HAYNES GALLERIES AWARD Haynes Galleries (Franklin, Tennessee) selected the below nine artists for a group exhibition and sale entitled The Magic of Realism, held from October 10th to November 30th, 2019. For more than three decades, artist and collector Gary R. Haynes has studied art while assembling a collection of some of the finest work by significant 19th, 20th, and 21st century American artists. Unique in many ways, Haynes Galleries is the result of Mr. Haynes’s passion for and commitment to the connoisseurship and appreciation of fine art. His vision, to create a private, full-service fine art gallery specializing in Contemporary and American Realism while serving as a resource center offering a range of art and collection management services, came to fruition with the inception of Haynes Galleries. The gallery presents original exhibitions at their intimate home-like space in Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville, with receptions, artist lectures, and special

events throughout the year. It also regularly partners with neighboring institutions, including museums and other galleries, for unique events and pop-up exhibitions. The gallery also presents select exhibitions at special venues in Maine during the summer months. The gallery actively offers specialized consulting and concierge services for collectors of every level. Mr. Haynes attends to the personal needs and aspirations of each collector, understanding their style preferences, goals, and timeline. The mission of Haynes Galleries is twofold – first: offer the finest art (with a focus on realism) and to provide exceptional collection management services on a personal level to those who share a passion for the arts. Second: assist gallery artists in the strategic development of their brand and a marketing approach that delivers the right message to the right audience at the right time. This award was selected by the gallery’s owner, Gary R. Haynes. AMERICAN LEGACY FINE ARTS AWARD American Legacy Fine Arts, LLC, Pasadena, California selected nine artists from the ARC Salon to participate in an exhibition and sale to be held at their gallery in the Spring of 2020. American Legacy Fine Arts (ALFA) was established in January 2003 by Elaine Adams as an exclusive art gallery to assist beginning and established collectors in their acquisitions of contemporarytraditional fine art created by leading artists. Built on the philosophy that artists should be encouraged to exercise artistic freedom – including exploration into different genres – ALFA provides art enthusiasts with the unique opportunity to expand and enhance their collections with exceptional works of original art that have truly inspired the artists. The gallery offers a gracious and elegant salon setting to showcase the work of exceptional contemporary American artists. Open by private appointment or invitation, ALFA is located just minutes from Downtown Los Angeles in one of Pasadena’s most tranquil neighborhoods and is near the worldfamous Rose Bowl stadium, Norton Simon Museum and Gamble House. This award was selected by Elaine Adams in coordination with the ARC. WINDOWS TO THE DIVINE AWARD Windows to the Divine® has chosen five artists to participate in their next show, entitled Contemporary Visions of Beauty, which will be held at SPACE Gallery in Denver with the Opening Gala scheduled for Thursday, November 12th, 2020, with educational programming on Friday and Saturday, November 13th-14th. To support artists and encourage everyone to become a collector, Windows to the Divine® hosts four types of art events:

national art exhibitions, paint outs, collector salons and national collector symposiums. The primary emphasis of the salons and symposiums is public and collector education. At exhibitions and paint outs, in addition to educational opportunities, all collectors – from beginner to connoisseur – can acquire high-caliber original art works from renowned and emerging artists from Colorado and around the country. To ensure accessibility for all, they showcase works in a wide range of styles and prices, with a strong focus on realistic subject matter. Through their national network of collectors, known as Collectors for Connoisseurship, they are known to have a large patron base, and placement in the Windows to the Divine® Exhibition will guarantee that many collectors are exposed to the artist and their work. This award was selected by Windows to the Divine® President, Shannon Robinson. THE TIAC ART PRIZE The International Arts and Culture Group (TIAC), is an ARC Allied Organization based in Florence, Italy, with branches in China & Australia. This non-profit organization believes that craftsmanship can be taught, and that refined craftsmanship is often critical in the powerful expression of ideas and emotions unique to the individual and the context in which they live. They want to encourage artists who have sound knowledge of traditional oil painting and sculpting to create artwork that is both meaningful for them personally as well as for their contemporary audience. This prize consists of two $1,000 awards, one for painting and one for sculpture. This award was selected by leading members of the TIAC Group. OTHER AWARDS Our other ARC awards include Most Ambitious Work, Best Nude, Best Social Commentary, and Best Trompe l’Oeil, as well as the runners-up in these categories. In addition, we have our Dual Category Award winners, which ranked in the top 20 works in more than one category, but did not place in First, Second, or Third. Finally, we have our Chairman’s Choice Awards, chosen by our ARC Chairman, Frederick C. Ross, and our ARC Staff Awards, each chosen by one member of the ARC Staff.
