Index of Artists with Illustrated Works 265–266

Please see the central section for ARC Sponsors and information about ARC Staff, the ARC Advisory Board, and Board of Jurors. For the 18th Salon, please begin at the opposite end of the book.

The 17th ARC Salon is one of the strongest we’ve had since ARC was founded 25 years ago. There is no shortage of artworks that demonstrate the depth and breadth of human potential and artistic creativity.

From a tiny group of just 14 small schools with a total student body of under 200, today’s art movement, outlined by the ARC Philosophy and mission, has 96 ARC Approved atelierbased schools and programs, with thousands of students and even more alumni. Contemporary realism is expanding to new heights, both in the scope of ambitious subject matter as well as ongoing advancement in the methods of artistic execution. Hopefully this will make the 21st century the greatest period yet in the creation and celebration of such

compelling masterworks. The fine arts of drawing, painting, and sculpture are best understood as a visual language. Very much like spoken and written languages, they were developed and preserved as a means of communication. Language is successful if communication takes place and unsuccessful if it does not. This year’s winners, finalists and honorable mentions have certainly met this standard.

Please join me in congratulating all of their exemplary accomplishments.

“This woman under the moonlight cannot tell where she is, what era she is in, where she came from, or where she is going. One thing we know for sure is that she looks peaceful in the moonlight. Under the

moonlight, which is not as strong as the sun but warm enough, she is calm and peaceful, and the flowers bloom.”

“We run at the future and all its wonderful and terrifying possibilities, not in spite of the unknown, but because of it.

I have had to develop a significant comfort level with the unknown. It can be intimidating or exciting based on how I choose to view it. This painting is an embodiment of that internal discussion.”

John Darley Embrace of the Unknown 2023 - Egg tempera on panel - 91.44 × 60.96 cm | 36 × 24 in

“While out on safari in Amboseli National Park, right before the sun set for the day, we saw this small herd of elephants munching away on the green grasses.
