Le contexte avoisinant s’apparente à un collage de bâtiments juxtaposés, situation assez caractéristique de l’urbanisme du Liban d’après guerre. Ce campus vertical, monolithique, fragmenté et ouvert, développe près de 60 000 m2 de surface pour 6 000 m2 d’impact au sol. Son programme multiple a été abordé de sorte à ménager autant d’espaces affectés que d’espaces indéterminés. Une grande importance est ainsi accordée au vide comme support de la mobilité, de l’appropriation, de la rencontre, telle une approche de l’architecture par l’espace public. En toiture, ce vide – exploré comme un espace de potentiel – se continue telle une grande balade en surplomb de la ville.

The surrounding area resembles a collage of juxtaposed buildings, creating a scene that is fairly characteristic of urban development in Lebanon since the war. This vertical, monolithic, fragmented and open campus offers nearly 60,000 m2 of space with a footprint of 6,000 m2. The multi-purpose program focuses both on spaces with an assigned function as well as ones with an indeterminate one. The campus design relies on its voids to facilitate flows, as well as student and faculty appropriation and encounters, adopting the same sort of approach to the architecture as is applied to public space. The use of the void is repeated on the roof, which offers a space with potential, giving users the impression of taking a stroll above the city.

À proximité de la route principale en surplomb, le projet s’apparente à un monolithe dont il est difficile de percevoir des détails. La double stratégie de prolongement de la maison avec le paysage extérieur et d’intégration de ce paysage dans l’espace intérieur de la maison crée un sentiment contradictoire entre liberté et confinement. Libérée de toute structure intérieure et donnant face à Beyrouth et à la mer, la maison est caractérisée par ses multiples escaliers générateurs d’expériences spatiales particulières. Ainsi, chaque nouvel espace devient la zone intermédiaire de celui qui lui succède, partie prenante d’une dynamique de circulation à double sens. Espace transitionnel également, la piscine se développe depuis la terrasse jusqu’à l’entrée, marquant une articulation forte entre le bâti et la nature. Les espaces d’entrée et de réception ouvrent sur une terrasse en surplomb de la vallée.

Close to the main road passing further up the mountain, the project looks like an imposing monolith whose features are hard to discern. A conflicting sentiment of freedom and confinement results from the dual strategy of extending the house out into the landscape and integrating it into the side of the mountain. The totally open plan of this house, facing Beirut and the sea, is characterized by its multiple stairways that create unusual spatial experiences. Each new area becomes the transition zone of the next, accentuating the dynamic of two-way circulations. The swimming pool, another transitional area, extends from the terrace all the way to the main entry, underscoring the rapport between building and nature. The entry and reception areas open onto a terrace overlooking the valley.

Beyrouth renaît de ses ruines entre un « avant », un « après » et un « à nouveau », donnant à éprouver la survivance malgré les signes d’une exacerbation et les manifestations d’une frénésie de business et de profit financier. La ville se montre aujourd’hui morcelée, avec un centre et une place des Martyrs qui à la fois se reconstruisent et se trouvent vidés.

Mais les Beyrouthins sont partout et les choses subsistent. Entre la mer Méditerranée et la montagne libanaise, tout donne le désir de métamorphoses régénératrices et de renaissance de cette ville phénix mythique fascinante dans le pays du cèdre, où pourtant la peur est en partage.

La métamorphose est l’essence même des choses et des milieux. Ce terme, dont le préfixe grec meta signifie « au-delà » ou « ce qui vient après », désigne une succession de formes pour un phénomène, un être ou un milieu. C’est ainsi que, chez Ovide1, qui reprend des figures mythologiques célèbres, le même personnage change d’aspect pour réaliser un projet qu’il était incapable de concrétiser auparavant.

Quelque chose ou quelqu’un se déforme pour se reformer autrement. Métamorphoser les territoires existants, c’est s’inscrire dans leur devenir en intégrant ou non ce qui a déjà eu lieu, et non plus, comme dans l’antiquité gréco-latine, un défi du réel réservé à la mythologie. C’est la forme qui vient après, sous une autre forme, mais qui est d’une certaine manière déjà présente. Tout se déroule comme s’il s’agissait d’une
