HOXTON MINI PRESS
Autumn 2026
The colour of publishing This year, we are introducing a new series of small books about colour. Each celebrates the role a single hue plays in art, photography, history and contemporary culture. We’re also releasing a new book called How to Enter the Art World for people who feel excluded from its white walls. You see, we are dedicated to making lively, colourful books. We remain an east London publisher, but our books now have a global appeal. That is to say, we are inspired by the colour and diversity of our hometown, but we seek the same colour and diversity in the wider world. Martin (with Ann, of course) Co-founders, Hoxton Mini Press Hackney, 2026

The perfect notebook in which to risk imperfection ‘Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.’ – Salvador Dalí Hoxton Mini Press set out to design the perfect notebook for creative thinkers: it had to lie flat, have beautiful paper and hard-wearing cloth, but also be a space where mistakes are welcome. The major
blocks to creativity are a lack of confidence and the terror of imperfection. This clothbound notebook, while being reassuringly beautiful, also contains inspirational quotes on creativity that give the user permission to let loose on the page, to scribble silliness in complete confidence that the best ideas often flush out with the worst ones. Life can be a bit messy, after all.

How to Enter the Art World After a late start, a first career, illness, raising children, a crisis of confidence, leaving it in disgust... A lively guide for anyone who wants to enter the art world without having just qualified from art school with the support of a rich patron. The commercial art world is powered by a convenient fiction: that artists’ careers proceed along an established route, onwards and upwards, with always the same goal in sight. It is also notoriously hard to re-enter after time away. Based on years spent talking with artists and arts professionals, How to Enter the Art
World… is a compendium of guidelines, pointers and tips to help readers chart their own route as an artist. Frank, funny and occasionally forthright, this book illuminates the many different ways to be an artist, regardless of life’s obstacles and interruptions. Hettie Judah is a writer and curator of the acclaimed exhibition Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood. The author of numerous books on art, she is well known as a critic, columnist, broadcaster and advocate for artists’ rights.

Architecture of Doom A visual tour of the world’s most spectacularly sinister and bleakly beautiful buildings. This photographic collection will explore some of the world’s most stark, striking and unsettling buildings, from a windowless skyscraper in New York with an uncertain purpose to an abandoned listening station in Berlin, eerie disused
London underground stations and an experimental concrete treehouse near Rome. Spanning imposing private residences, snow-topped former Soviet monuments, dismal utilitarian structures and Brutalist architectural masterpieces from around the globe, these buildings – many of which are stained by war and tragedy – stand united by their bold simplicity and raw, powerful presence.

Folk Britain A field guide to curious customs A pocket-sized field guide to Britain’s brilliantly bizarre folk rituals and esoteric customs. Each May in Gloucestershire, contestants embark on an ankle-shattering pursuit of an enormous wheel of cheese down a 26-degree hill. In August, a man utterly covered in burdock seeds and burrs ambles 9 miles through Queensferry, getting progressively drunker on whisky offered by locals. On Bonfire Night, foolhardy residents of Ottery St Mary process through the streets with flaming tar barrels on their backs. These are just a few of Britain’s folk customs, many of
them centuries old. From the profound to the baffling, this handbook brings together over 100 rituals and traditions that mark changing seasons, unite communities and offer insight into Britain’s wonderfully weird cultural identity. Organised seasonally, this is both a field guide for tourists keen to participate in unusual traditions and a lively, illuminating history of British folk culture. Tom Howells is the author of the hugely popular Ancient Britain for Modern Folk, as well as several other books in the Opinionated Guides series.

Motherhood: A pocket primer A simple, visual introduction to the past, present and politics of motherhood. What does it mean to be a mother? At once intimate and immense, motherhood is one of the most universal – and most misunderstood – human experiences. Too often reduced to something purely domestic, it is a force that shapes economies, politics, culture and the future itself – whether or not we have children.
From the biology of pregnancy and the science of breastfeeding to the politics of care, abortion rights and reproductive justice, this clear, accessible introduction explores the history, myths, pressures and contradictions of motherhood today. Nell Frizzell is a writer, journalist and Vogue columnist. Her books include The Panic Years, an exploration of bodies, babies and the big questions facing modern life.
Pocket Primers Lively, visual introductions to the most interesting topics of today, this series covers subjects that we overhear in conversation or on the news but which, frankly, we’d all like to understand better. We assume that you are like us: you want well-researched information distilled into digestible chunks, and you enjoy the analogue thrill of rather lovely images in a beautifully designed book. The Little Book of London Lore A pocket-sized guide to London’s ancient myths, urban legends and enduring ceremonies. London’s shadowy alleyways and timeworn cobbled streets have tales to tell. In its sewers, Victorian toshers would share stories of a Rat Queen who would protect them from drowning. The last of the British giants, Gog and Magog, stand guard at Guildhall and, legend has it, the London Stone – the city’s ‘magical heart’ – will cause the capital to fall if it’s ever
moved or destroyed. From the ravens in the Tower to Jimi Hendrix’s green parakeets, this handbook features 100 ancient and modern myths, legends, customs and ceremonies from all areas of London, offering compelling insights into the city’s identity and its rich folklore. Ian Simmons is News Editor of Fortean Times, the world’s leading magazine on the peculiar, paranormal and downright perturbing, and is a regular contributor to The Chap. An Opinionated Guide to Lisbon
Explore the underrated jewel of Provence.
A boldly opinionated guide to the very best places to visit in this vibrant, historic city.
Marseille is often boxed into clichés, but there is more here than meets the eye. France’s sun-soaked ‘second city’ hums with creativity, inventive food and spectacular scenery, from the rugged Calanques to the glowing Côte d’Azur

What’s not to love?
Portugal’s picture-perfect coastal capital tops the list of city-break destinations for tourists, drawn to its sun-drenched streets, dynamic art scene and mouthwatering food. Its cobbled streets, pastel-toned houses and stunning scenery, along with its warm

Britain’s Best Saunas Britain’s sauna scene is hotter than ever. Social, relaxing and surprisingly good for you… saunas are replacing the pub as Britons’ favourite pastime. They can be found everywhere, from rugged Pembrokeshire coastlines and Scottish islands to inner-city carparks. Some are so traditional, they could have been plucked from Helsinki; others put an innovative – and distinctly British – spin on things,
with saunas in repurposed horseboxes and pub backrooms. Many are new, boasting dynamic community events (sweaty yoga, anyone?); some are as old as our heritage spa towns. This book explores the very best of them. Lucie Grace is a writer focusing on culture, travel and wellness. She first fell in love with the power of sauna on a trip to Budapest aged 19. She’s been chasing steam ever since.

The connection between the brain and the gut is one of the most exciting research areas of biology today, changing the way we manage our mental health. This book traces our understanding of the gut, from ancient medicine to modern day, examining the enormous impact this little-understood organ has on our lives.
What exactly is fake news? How is it threatening our democratic systems? And why are we so drawn to outlandish stories? This pithy introduction to rumour, conspiracy and misinformation, from Ancient Greece to Donald Trump, explores what it means to live in a ‘post-truth’ world... and where we go from here.
Psychedelics are more relevant now than they were in the 1960s. Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine and MDMA promise to revolutionise our understanding of mental health and the brain. The book charts the journey from ancient sacraments and countercultural weapons to groundbreaking medicine in the labs of today and tomorrow.
