Dylan by Schatzberg Jerry Schatzberg In 1965, photographer Jerry Schatzberg, already well-established in the field due to his fashion and portrait photography for various publications, such as Vogue, Esquire and Life, listened to Bob Dylan for the first time. Shortly thereafter, Schatzberg was photographing a job in his studio and had some fortuitous company. Famed music journalist Al Aronowitz and disc jockey Scott Ross were discussing Dylan and a recent performance they had seen of his. Half listening to their conversation, he volunteered that he’d like to photograph the singer if given the chance. Dylan’s new wife called the following day and gave Schatzberg an open invitation to the studio where Dylan was currently recording ‘Highway 61 Revisited’; excited and curious, Schatzberg set off the very next day for the studio. Schatzberg received a warm welcome from the singer, who immediately sat him down to listen to what he had been recording that day. Dylan gave him free rein of the studio once he started shooting and the images that emerged from that day make obvious the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that was already brewing between photographer and subject. That almost-instant trust and rapport quickly grew into a friendship and they are part of the reason Schatzberg’s sittings with Dylan work so successfully and are so important. Working and socialising together, Schatzberg would eventually do nine more photo shoots with Dylan from 1965-6, arguably the singer’s most creative period, and capture the (now) Nobel laureate during one of the most pivotal moments in music history.

Kenzo Takada Kazuko Masui and Chihiro Masui In 1970, the young Japanese designer Kenzo Takada opened his first boutique, Jungle Jap, in Paris and revolutionised the fashion world. His colourful, ethnic, and nomadic- influenced collections, made with luxurious and vibrantly patterned textiles, tweaked the conventions of haute couture while maintaining the quality of traditional European clothing houses. He was influenced by Parisian fashion and Japanese kimonos, boldly mixing colours and prints, cuts and materials. His vibrant palette and pattern combinations were joyful and whimsical, and very different from the subtle tailoring of the traditional Paris couturier. In his inspired blend of the opulent and the exotic, he developed a signature style and found early success. With stunning photography, and over 300 sketches from Kenzo’s private collection, this book traces more than forty years of his creative output. It includes photographs from his high-energy runway shows, in addition to personal photographs, and a behind-the-scene look at the creation of a spectacular wedding dress, opening a window on the creative process and capturing Kenzo’s energy, vision, and presence. Superbly illustrated throughout with pencilled and hand coloured sketches, swatched drawings, and previously unpublished archival photographs, the authors explore Kenzo’s career, tracing the evolution of his cult label in a look-book of visual exuberance.

The Beatles London, 1963. Norman Parkinson Introduction by Pat Gilbert On the morning of Thursday, September 12, 1963, noted fashion photographer Norman Parkinson was to photograph a young pop group from Liverpool. Earlier that year, the band had exploded onto the scene - releasing the first of eleven (out of twelve) studio albums that would reach number one on the charts. That band was The Beatles. The album had been ‘Please Please Me’, it was still number one and it would stay at number one for thirty weeks. Parkinson, already established as Britain’s most famous photographer, had a date with Britain’s new greatest band. Revealing, insightful and funny this collection of photos captures The Beatles near the start of their spectacular career. Their creativity is plain to see in these photos that have become some of the most important in the extensive Beatles catalogue. Now, ACC Art Books, in collaboration with The Norman Parkinson Archive and Iconic Images, presents this historic meeting between a new music group and one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Covering nearly 30 rolls of film, these images of The Beatles at the President Hotel in Bloomsbury and famed Abbey Road Studios, offer a rare insight of the making of an iconic band.

Emperor The Perfect Penguin Sue Flood, foreword by Michael Palin Emperor: The Perfect Penguin is a celebration of one of the world’s most charismatic creatures. In temperatures that can reach -50°C with 150km/h winds, the emperor penguins’ ability to survive and thrive is nothing short of astounding. Over the past nine years, award-winning photographer Sue Flood has journeyed to remote Antarctic penguin colonies to capture the birds in their native home. Sue Flood’s respect for her subjects emanates from every page. From the poignant sight of an egg abandoned on the sea ice, to majestic shots of emperor penguins returning from the sea and heart-warming photos of chicks clustering together for warmth, every shot explores a new angle of life in this remote and ice-crusted world. As well as following the difficult journey of the penguins across the sea ice, Emperor: The Perfect Penguin narrates the hardships that must be endured to catch the perfect photograph. Sue’s behind-the-scenes experiences prove that it is only with patience, endurance, and several thermal layers that one can capture magical moments on Earth’s most inhospitable continent.

Goats and Sheep. A Portrait Farm Kevin Horan, Elena Passarello When American photographer Kevin Horan moved from city to country, he found among his animal companions goats and sheep whose chorus of sounds suggested they were not just herd animals, but perhaps individuals as well. Experienced in portraiture, Horan decided to photograph them in his studio, as though they were privileged clients. The resulting images ask us to notice the variety, dignity, and personalities of these lowliest of creatures, who speak to us through the camera in a profile, a sideward glance, or direct gaze. With different coats, faces, and expressions, they are funny, fascinating, intelligent, curious, engaging “others” who command our undivided attention and respect. They remind us that we too are fellow creatures - and the camera isn’t always on us.

Surf Tribe Stephan Vanfleteren Foreword by Gerry Lopez With Surf Tribe, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Surfers use the waves for fun, but also to forget and to battle, both with others and with themselves. Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He has sought out young talent, living icons, and old legends, both competitive and free surfers. The photographs here are serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren’s well known, haunting style; as always, he reaches below the surface and goes to the core of his subjects. Included, amongst many others, are Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, John Florence, Mickey Munoz, Filipe Toledo and Stephanie Gilmore.

Terry O’Neill Rare and Unseen Terry O’Neill Terry O’Neill is one of the greatest living photographers today, with work displayed and exhibited at first-class museums and fine-art galleries worldwide. His iconic images of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Brigitte Bardot, Faye Dunaway, and David Bowie - to name but a few - are instantly recognisable across the globe. Now, for the first time, O’Neill selects a range of images from his extensive archive of “vintage prints”, which will surprise and delight collectors and photography lovers alike. Long before the age of digital, photographers would send physical prints to the papers and magazines. These prints were passed around, handled by many, stamped on the back, and often times captioned. After use, the prints were filed away, thrown out or - for the lucky few - sent back to the photographer or their photo agencies. At the dawn of the 1960s, when O’Neill’s career began, physical prints were the norm. Terry kept as many as he could that were sent back to him. “I just kept everything,” he says. “I don’t know why. Back then, there wasn’t really a reason to keep them. Photos were used straight away and then I just moved on to the next assignment. No one was thinking these would be worth anything down the line, let alone fifty years later.”

A stunning celebration of the career of one of Britain’s greatest and most loved photographers.

This book collects hundreds of these rare images; a true must for Terry’s fans and photography collectors. ACC Art Books 9781851498918 320 x 320mm. 240pp., 32 col., 111 b.&w. The Last Painting Final Works of the Great Masters: From Giotto to Twombly Bernard Chambaz There are no rules, and even less justice. Death takes everyone without discrimination. Sometimes it is accidental - like Signorelli, who fell from scaffolding. Sometimes it is expected, as with the diabetic Cezanne, who wrote “I am old, sick, and I swore to die while painting”. But often, researching a painter’s death is an easier task than determining which of their works is truly their ‘last’. Paintings tend to be dated by year and not month, inciting much debate among art historians. This book embraces this ambiguity, studying 100 examples of works that lay completed for several years, or were left unfinished on the easel, or were finished post-mortem by a friend’s grieving hand. The Last Painting collects 100 terminal paintings from 100 artists, including Dalí, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Goya, Pollock, Rembrandt, Dix, Bonnard, Titien, and many more. Each picture gives us a glimpse into the painter’s mind. Did they know death was coming? Did they paint with denial, or acceptance? Did they return to a favourite subject, or decide to embark on a new, original project while they still had time? A poetic and thought-provoking book, The Last Painting is a sensitive exploration of the relationship between art and death.

Klimt / Schiele Drawings from the Albertina Museum, Vienna Marian Bisanz-Prakken, Elizabeth Clegg and Jane Kallir Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and his younger protégé Egon Schiele (1890-1918) are considered two of the greatest figures of Austrian Modernism. Whether competing with or inspiring one another, together they reconfigured the way the human body was translated into art. Although both artists are primarily remembered as painters, between them they left 7,000 drawings, many of the greatest of which are now in the collection of the Albertina Museum, Vienna. In 2018 an exhibition opens in London of both artists’ drawings from the Albertina. This stunning publication records these precious works, which are very rarely displayed and almost never travel, in all their erotic, intriguing and sometimes disturbing beauty. Leading experts on the period provide authoritative texts that illuminate the important relationship between the two artists. They analyse the role of drawing in their practice and chart the response of early twentieth-century Vienna to their electrifying work, which still has the power to shock and enthral to this day.

Bob and Roberta Smith: The Secret to a Good Life Bob and Roberta Smith When Bob and Roberta Smith - pseudonym of the artist Patrick Brill - was elected a Royal Academician in 2013, he had a more complex relationship with the Royal Academy than most. He remembers well the feeling of suspense as his parents, both artists, waited to hear whether their submissions had been accepted for the annual Summer Exhibition. The outcome brought jubilation or despair, but rarely to both, which led to its problems. In The Secret to a Good Life, Bob and Roberta Smith introduces his mother, Deirdre Borlase, and her encounters with the often sexist and class-ridden art establishment of post-war Britain. Her story has led her son to ruminate on drawing, politics and the challenge that art can pose to authority. In the colourful signwriting style for which he is best known, the artist tells a poignant and political family story. In the end, it is Deirdre who provides the answer to the question: what is the secret to a good life? Accompanies an installation at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, from 4 September 2018.

Barbara Rae: The Northwest Passage Tagak Curley, Colin Greenslade, Duncan Macmillan, Tom Muir, and Barbara Rae In 2015 Barbara Rae travelled to Greenland on the trail of her namesake and fellow Scot, the surgeon and explorer Dr John Rae (1813-1893). Captivated by the ‘wild sort of life’, he travelled to the Arctic in 1846, learning local languages and survival techniques. His enlightened co-operation and collaboration with the Inuit - almost unheard of at the time - allowed him to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin’s lost 1845 expedition, and to confirm the existence of the Northwest Passage, the maritime link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This book is the artistic result of Barbara Rae’s extraordinary journey. Through the artist’s deft handling of colour and line the frozen landscape of the Arctic jumps into life from the page. This special publication takes the reader on a journey of discovery from Scotland to the Arctic, and back again. Her vivid images are combined with insightful texts from authors including the Inuit leader and advocate Tagak Curley and the celebrated playwright Duncan Macmillan, as well as contributions from the artist herself. Accompanies exhibitions at: Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 4 August – 9 September 2018 Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney, 22 September – 10 November 2018 Canada House, London, 29 November 2018 – 13 January 2019

Polar bears, caribou and the Northern Lights all make appearances, accompanied by Rae’s handwritten notes in which she records her experiences and her immediate reactions to this harsh, unforgiving environment. Each page of the sketchbooks is meticulously reproduced, and the handsomely bound volume sits comfortably in the hand, making it the perfect gift for anyone interested in painting or exploration.

Oceania Peter Brunt and Nicholas Thomas, with Noelle Kahanu, Emmanuel Kasarhérou, Sean Mallon, Michael Mel and Dame Anne Salmond From the remote shores of Rapa Nui to the dense rainforest of Papua New Guinea, the islands of the Pacific are home to some of the most culturally diverse populations on the planet. The region embraces an extraordinary range of art forms, from delicate shell ornaments to spectacularly decorated canoes and meeting houses. These have fascinated outsiders since the exploratory voyages of Captain Cook, the first of which commenced 250 years ago in 1768, and went on to entrance Gauguin and a host of other European artists. This volume accompanies a major survey in London and Paris of art from Oceania. It brings together the most up-to-date scholarship by the leading experts in the field, encompassing a dazzling array of objects from the region, including many that have never been published before. Also included are many works that have historically been overlooked, such as painted and woven textiles, elaborate wicker assemblages and expressively sculpted vessels, alongside works by artists working in Oceania today. Objects of great aesthetic beauty, these artworks are the product of a complex web of social, mythological and historical influences. Accompanies exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (29 September - 10 December 2018) and the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Paris (1 February - 1 May 2019).

Pin-Ups Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art of Celebrity Hannah Brocklehurst with Frances Fowle This book offers a beautiful exploration of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s works in lithography. It explores the new artistic approach to the poster at the end of the 19th century, which bridged visual and popular culture and turned the relationship between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art on its head. Technical innovations in lithography pioneered by Lautrec and other artists produced larger sizes, more varied colours and new effects and launched the role of the poster as a powerful tool for communication and marketing in fin de siècle Paris. Lautrec’s embrace of celebrity helped to define the famous hotspots (theatres, cabarets and café-concerts) of fin de siècle Paris and made their stars recognisable figures across the whole city. Works by contemporaries such as Pierre Bonnard, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen and Jules Chéret also feature, and Lautrec’s influence on British, and particularly Scottish, artists of the period are explored. These include Walter Richard Sickert, Arthur Melville, John Duncan Fergusson, William Nicholson, James Pryde, Charles Rennie Macintosh and Agnes Raeburn. SkateArt From the Object to the Artwork Romain Hurdequint The 2000s proved a turning point for the skateboard and its relationship to art. Previously restricted to practical use, the skate deck left the pavement to appear on the walls of galleries and auction houses. Such was the advent of an entirely new contemporary art movement, laconically baptised Skate Art. From silk-screening to Posca markers, from repurposing and twisted shapes to upcycling broken boards, this volume provides an overview of the most significant techniques and decks of the last two decades. Artists from the realm of Street Art have long had a close relationship with Skate culture, and figures like Shepard Fairey, D*Face and ROA are among the first to have applied their art to this support. At the other end of the spectrum, Mark Gonzales, Thomas Campbell and Ed Templeton are pure products of the skater world, and it was through their collaborations with brands to produce boards that they acceded to the title of artist. In its 320 pages, this anthology presents a specialised and eclectic selection of decks made by artists from all over the world.

The Art of Campari Since the nineteenth century, Campari has been responsible for some of the most distinctive and innovative commercial imagery created in Italy. Founded in Milan in 1860, the company quickly began to pursue a dynamic approach to marketing its products, harnessing the new power of the advertising poster. Aiming to create a sophisticated brand, Campari worked with some of the most celebrated designers of the early 1900s, including Leonetto Cappiello, Marcello Dudovich, Adolf Hohenstein, and Marcello Nizzoli. It was, however, the groundbreaking campaigns created by the Futurist artist Fortunato Depero that became Campari’s most celebrated commissions. From the mid-1920s, his bold, witty and geometric designs modernised Campari’s look, creating an unmistakable visual identity; his designs were also the basis of the famous conical Campari Soda bottle, launched in 1932. Depero’s belief that the publicity poster would be ‘the painting of the future’ continued to inform Campari’s post-war commissions, which included elegant and vibrant designs epitomising the spirit of the ‘Swinging Sixties’. Drawn from the company’s extensive archives in Milan, the book features Belle Époque posters and original artwork for the revolutionary campaigns of the 1920s, in addition to equally striking examples of post-war graphic design and a range of vintage crates, glasses, plaques and other ephemera.

Egon Schiele Dieter Buchhart In 2018 the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, will host exhibitions on two of the greatest artists of the 20th century – Egon Schiele and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both exhibitions will have the same curator, and will be held at the same time. The shows will illustrate exactly what it is that linked the two artists: line, and the use of expressive force. In Schiele’s work the evolution of his unique, idiosyncratic uses of line provides a visceral element of expression that allows the viewer to trace his artistic development over the course of distinctive periods within his body of work. This, the catalogue of the Egon Schiele exhibition, concentrates on themes of the body and portraits, through drawings and watercolours, showcasing Schiele’s incredible expressive force.

Accompanies a major double exhibition on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele - two artists that died too young but created masses of work over the course of a decade, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, from 2nd October 2018 to 4th January 2019.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Dieter Buchhart This, the catalogue of the Basquiat exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, brings together 100 of the artist’s most important masterpieces, sourced from international museums and private collections. With the astonishing radicalness of his artistic practice, Basquiat renewed the concept of art with enduring impact. This Basquiat retrospective centres on the idea of Basquiat’s unique energetic line, his use of words, symbols, and how he integrates collage in his paintings, sculptures, objects, and large-scale drawings. The catalogue includes texts by great authors, including Paul Schimmel who tells of his meeting with Basquiat in California; Francesco Pellizi who knew Basquiat well and has not written about him for a long time; and Okwui Enwezor who talks about Basquiat in the context of African American identity.

Landy Love Since 1948 Nadja Kneissler On 29th January 2016 the last Land Rover Defender left the factory halls in Solihull (UK) - a Defender 90 Soft Top with heritage outfit - and went directly to the Jaguar Land Rover Collection exhibition. With this, a great story of success ended: the most original of all Land Rover models had been in mass production for 68 years. In 1948 it was developed for agricultural use, but the robustness of the all-wheel drive vehicle got round quickly. The demand never decreased and there were always new versions and engines. Today, 75 percent of all ‘Landies’ ever built are still in use worldwide. This declaration of love for the British classic presents portraits of all Land Rover generations and of their most passionate owners.

Made in Denmark Design Since 1900 Olaf Thormann and Sabine Epple for the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig (eds) Danish design is inextricably linked with the design icons of the twentieth century. From Kaare Klint via Arne Jacobsen to Verner Panton, they informed the product and home decor culture of whole generations particularly in the latter half. However, that equally significant designers, craftspeople and internationally observed trends that preceded this era receives far less attention. Yet it is Skønvirke, the Danish form of Art Nouveau that created the basis for modern Danish design. In this comprehensive exhibition of Danish works, Art Deco trends are also featured as well as those of functionalism. ‘Made in Denmark’ was finally established as an international brand by 1945. Danish, and by extension Scandinavian, design has been a role model ever since and remains the epitome and expression of a timeless modern lifestyle to this day.

Pukka Indian 100 Objects that Define India Jahnvi Lakhota Nandan, Shivani Gupta In Hindi ‘pukka’ means genuine, authentic, complete. Design in India is not only determined by the aesthetic appeal of the object, but also by the significance of the object in the everyday life of its users. In some instances, the age-old practices established by ancient Indian wisdom determine the design of an object, such as the datun (neem tree twig) recommended for oral care or agarbatti (incense) used to heal and protect. On the other hand, the lota (a kind of metal pot) has been a part of everyday Indian life for centuries and its design remains unchanged even today. Pukka Indian brings together 100 objects that are the most coveted symbols representing Indian culture and design. This illustrated book celebrates the diversity, versatility, vibrancy, and colours of design icons - ranging from kulhad to the kolhapuri chappal, Nano to the Nehru jacket, and auto rickshaw meter to the Ambassador - that set them apart in a country as multifarious as India. Each of these 100 profiles reveals the intrinsic Indian nature of every object, and how each has influenced design, culture and, in turn, every Indian. Archigram - The Book Warren Chalk, Peter Cook, Dennis Crompton, Ron Herron, David Greene and Michael Webb; with essays by Reyner Banham, Martin Pawley and Michael Sorkin Archigram comprised Warren Chalk (1927-88), Peter Cook (1936-), Dennis Crompton (1935-), David Greene (1937-), Ron Herron (1930-94), and Michael Webb (1937-). Together, in the 1960s and early 1970s, they envisioned the future of architecture in ways that enthralled a generation. In an era defined by the space race, they developed a ‘high-tech’, lightweight, infra-structural approach that stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. They devised autonomous dwellings and focused on survival technology; they experimented with megastructures and modular construction systems; they explored mobility through the environment, and the use of portable living capsules: all through the medium of an incredible series of drawings and models. Archigram’s influence has been profound and enduring. They gave the Hightech movement its impetus; they inspired architects such as Renzo Piano and Norman Foster; and they laid the ground for the design of buildings such as the Pompidou Centre. This book catalogues Archigram’s activities over fourteen years, together with commentaries by the architects and critics writing then and now. Edited and designed by Archigram member Dennis Crompton, it has been 40 years in the making.

Best Buildings - Belgium Hadewijch Ceulemans In 2012 Luster published Belgium’s Best Buildings, an elegant and easy-to-use pocket guide for architecture fans and for everyone who is curious about architecture in Belgium. That same year, the book was nominated as ‘One of the most inspiring architecture books of 2012’ by Architectura.be and The Word Magazine presented it as one of ‘Six of Belgium’s Best Travel Guides’. The concept of the book hasn’t changed for this new edition: starting from the Top Ten lists of renowned Belgian architects and architecture critics, it presents the best Belgian buildings (completed after 1900) with a photo and a short text in English and Dutch. Lists of the architects are also included. This new edition contains over 20 new lists, 15 extra buildings, and of course a slightly different selection. The result is an interesting mix of well-known contemporary buildings such as the MAS museum in Antwerp, historical must-sees and less obvious buildings, such as a modernist chapel or an architect’s house.

Luster 9789460582233 185 x 130mm. 232pp., 100 col. Available £16.95, Paperback English, Dutch

Best Buildings - Holland Toon Lauwen Following Best Buildings - Belgium, Luster brings a second title in the new Best Buildings series: Best Buildings - Holland. The concept is the same: this book presents over 90 buildings completed after 1900 in the Netherlands, with a photo and a short text. The selection is based on the top ten lists of renowned Dutch architects and architecture critics, which are also included in the book. Best Buildings - Holland features a surprising mix of bold contemporary architecture (such as the market hall and the central station in Rotterdam), historical must-sees (like the Rietveld-Schröder House) and less obvious buildings (such as a former sanatorium in Hilversum).

Barron & Larcher Textile Designers Michal Silver & Sarah Burns “A design isn’t dozens of little objects, or hungry-looking rectangular windowpanes: it is something that becomes a design by repeating, giving you something that a single pattern doesn’t give you.” - (Phyllis Barron, Dartington 1964) During the 1920s and 1930s, Phyllis Barron (1890-1964) and Dorothy Larcher (1882-1952) were at the forefront of a revival in hand block-printing in Britain. As designer-makers they formed a unique partnership, producing innovative textiles and seeing the entire process through from beginning to end. Using whatever materials they could muster - fabric ranging from balloon cotton to prison sheets and velvet, and everyday items such as combs and car mats for printing - and pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved with predominantly natural dyes, these two remarkable women ran a successful business that lasted from 1923 until the outbreak of World War II. Nearly one hundred years on, another special collaboration between the Craft Studies Centre in Farnham, Christopher Farr Cloth and Ivo Prints, has brought a selection of Barron and Larcher’s work back into production. The warm welcome they have received across the globe is a testament to the timeless quality of great design.

Ten Drinks That Changed the World Seki Lynch; illustrations by Tom Maryniak Walk into any bar, in almost any part of the world, and there, on the back shelf you’re likely to see Baijiu, Cognac, Vodka, Scottish and Irish Whisky, Shochu, Tequila, Bourbon, Rum, Gin, and Absinthe. These drinks helped shape our culture; inspired authors and painters, brought both anarchy and harmony and even, in some cases, induced mass hysteria. In Ten Drinks That Changed the World, bartender, poet and writer Seki Lynch tells the stories behind the spirits. Tracing the origins of each drink, he dissects the ingredients and locates the first makers, exploring how perceptions and consumption levels have ebbed and flowed through the centuries. Cocktail recipes, lists of artisan makers and insights from the great, good and notorious drinkers of history help complete the résumé for each drink. London artist Tom Maryniak has created original illustrations of each drink for the book.

111 Places in the Lake District That You Shouldn’t Miss Solange Berchemin

111 Places Along the Algarve That You Shouldn’t Miss Catrin George

The Lake District delights its visitors with a series of superlatives: England’s largest national park, highest mountain, deepest lakes and now a new World Heritage status. One of Britain’s best-loved and most visited locations unveils its secrets. This unusual guidebook explores 111 of the area’s most interesting places, it leaves the well-trodden paths to find the unknown: marvel at a stained glass window which inspired the American flag, let others flock to Hill Top while you explore Beatrix Potter’s holiday home, walk through ancient forests to talk to fairies and swim with immortal fish. Pause to wonder at a stunning lake where a President proposed, view a constellation of stars like nowhere else, find out why exotic spices are used in local cuisine.

The Algarve is different. On the coast of the former Kingdom of the Algarve the wind blows stronger, the summer is hotter, the cabbages grow bigger, the fruit ripens quicker and the grilled Sardines taste better than anywhere else in the country. The people are enthrallingly candid, sometimes defiantly stubborn or plaintively silent, but mostly they like to laugh out loud, and are nevertheless entirely conscious of tradition. A trip to the Algarve will take you to a different time zone, away from the constant bustle of middle-Europe to a calmness, typical for the Algarve, that is hard to resist. Inland the clock ticks differently again, and your curiosity for the country and its people will grow with every kilometre. This book will lead you to 111 incredible places off the beaten track.

Barcelona: On the Road Edited by Chiara Ingrosso

Naples: On the Road Edited by Andrea Nastri and Giuliana Vespere

When we think of Barcelona, the eclectic art of Antoni Gaudí immediately springs to mind. It is present in every corner of the city. Or we think of the Olympic Ring with the tower designed by Santiago Calatrava; but these are only two aspects of the exquisite beauty of the Catalan capital which has been able to blend old and new in a unique and unpredictable way. The traditional Gothic architecture has a discreet historical flavour, while the buildings that have appeared in the past 10 years reflect modern art trends like Cubism, Neo-plasticism, and Futurism. Named the European capital of innovation in 2014, the city boasts extremely distinctive urban planning because of the unusual bevelled corners on city blocks that provide more open street intersections, with extra space for outdoor cafés and seating, that give the city its particularly sociable community atmosphere.

The influence of Anjou and Aragon, and the traces left by Bourbon, Hapsburg and Napoleonic domination have made Naples a treasure-trove of different styles and periods, rich in original imperfections and extravagance that deserve to be discovered and enjoyed. This guide is aimed at illustrating the structure and unusual aspects of a city in constant artistic ferment, where architecture ranges from ancient aristocratic palaces to the modern futuristic skyscrapers of the business district, the Art Stations of the Naples Metro, the small Art Nouveau houses in the poorer areas in the historic centre; architecture that exists layer upon layer, spreading outwards to the city boundaries.

NYC Guide for Instagrammers Silvie Bonne NYC Guide for Instagrammers is a one-of-a-kind guide to the Big Apple: hip and trendy, up-to-date, informative and playful. The book provides the reader with no less than a hundred scenic and impressive ‘Instagrammable’ spots in New York. Of course, some classics have been included - Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central, Liberty Island, Central Park - but most of all, the reader will be introduced to hidden gems, known only to locals, and to ‘new classics’, relatively new landmarks on the verge of becoming some of the biggest attractions New York has to offer.

Luster 9789460582264 220 x 160mm. 220pp., 200 col. Available £14.95, Paperback

New York is the most Instagrammed city in the world. NYC Guide for Instagrammers is nothing short of the perfect guide for the nextgeneration city trippers, Instagram aficionados and photography enthusiasts. The People Spotter’s Guide Vol. 1 A Field Guide to Humans Sven Van den Eynde and Tom Borremans The People Spotter’s Guide, Vol 1 is a tongue-in-cheek catalogue, presenting over 100 types of humans. Every type is illustrated with a photo and - of course satirical - text, to help you spot these people in the wild. So you might run into an example of the Homo Securitatis Inferioris (security agents who don’t look like they’re strong) or the Homo Amantus Vestimentatis Identicus (an identically dressed couple). The guide encourages you to go out and explore your own biotope and to take a closer look at the people living in it. Every spotting is awarded with a number of points - the more rare the behaviour you’ve witnessed, the more points you’ll get.

Cats of Paris and Elsewhere Lila De Nobili, Edited by Claudie Gastine & Francesca Simone Paris cats have been celebrated by painters, writers and chansonniers since the 19th century, when Steinlein created the poster for the cabaret ‘Le Chat noir’. An important place among these artists is occupied by Lila De Nobili, who moved to the French capital in 1945 and never left the 6th arrondissement, its quintessential neighbourhood. She painted and designed stage sets for the Scala in Milan, the Opéra in Paris, the Covent Garden in London and many other theatres. Sought by the most famous directors, she designed costumes for Maria Callas, Edith Piaf, Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. Just after the events of May 1968, she devoted herself exclusively to painting and adopted her first cat, Ulysse, in her apartment in rue de Verneuil. The feline family soon grew and Lila never tired of sketching them, drawing them, or painting them in watercolour. Most of these intimate works, full of insight and subtlety, were gifted to a friend, herself a cat lover, by Lila in her last years and thanks to this collection a book can now be published.

What the Fuck! Edited by Luster The book is a cross between a cabinet of curiosities and a documentary on the human species, offering a unique insight into contemporary amateur photography. Photos like these are avidly shared on social media and this book makes you think about the how, where and why of this phenomenon. They are often accompanied by the acronym ‘WTF’ on social media and websites, reflecting the incomprehension of anyone who gazes at these photos as well as the uneasy feeling that overcomes the ‘voyeur’ when he sees them. All these pictures combined emphasise the astounding pace at which countless anonymous spectators are exposed to these extraordinary images, and how the extraordinary increasingly becomes the norm to which we have all become accustomed. Luster 9789460582271 100 x 150mm. 180pp., 180 col. November 2018 £9.00, Paperback

A collection of astonishing photos from around the world, which the editors stumbled upon during their many hours on the World Wide Web.
