Polis Es war keine Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Als ich 2015, aus dem beschaulichen Köln kommend, zum ersten Mal Istanbuler Boden betrat, hatte ich das Gefühl, das Tor zur Hölle habe sich geöffnet. Ein Moloch. Laut, überlaufen und undurchdringlich. Es hat zwei Tage gedauert, und ich war von dieser Stadt gefesselt.

Byzantion, Konstantinopel, Istanbul, oder Polis, einfach die Stadt, wie sie die Griechen nannten, ist eine Herausforderung.

Dieser Metropole ist mit der rein geografischen Unterteilung in Orient und Okzident nicht beizukommen. Dieses Bild verschwimmt sehr schnell und weicht einem Kaleidoskop an Bildern und Eindrücken, die einen förmlich überschwemmen.

Man kann von den Palästen aus osmanischer Zeit und den monumentalen Moscheebauten überwältigt sein, man kann vor der überbordenden Geschäftigkeit Istanbuls kapitulieren, aber die Stadt wird einen nicht gleichgültig lassen. Was mich letztlich auf ihre Seite gezogen hat, sind die Menschen mit ihren zutiefst unterschiedlichen Lebensgefühlen und Lebensentwürfen. Und nicht zuletzt mit ihrer Gastfreundschaft.

Als Straßenfotograf habe ich die Erfahrung gemacht, dass man das Fotografiertwerden hier nicht als Bedrohung wahrnimmt, sondern gelassen zur Kenntnis nimmt oder es als das begreift, was es tatsächlich sein sollte: eine Wertschätzung der fotografierten Person. Istanbul ist keine klassische Schönheit. Diese Stadt hat viele Narben. Sie bewahren sie vor Eitelkeit. Und das macht das Verlieben leichter.

It wasn’t love at first sight. When I first came to Istanbul from the tranquil city of Cologne in 2015, I felt as if the gates of hell had been thrown open. It was chaos. Noisy, overcrowded, and impenetrable. It took two days before I was completely spellbound by this city.

Bu ilk bakışta bir aşk değildi elbet. 2015 senesinde huzur abidesi Köln kentinden doğru ilk defa İstanbul topraklarına ayak bastığımda içimde sanki cehennem kapıları açıldığı hissi oluşmuştu. Sanki bir doyumsuz, gürültülü, taşkın ve içine girilemez bir kent. Ancak bu kentin beni cezbetmesi iki gün sürdü sadece.

Byzantion, Constantinople, Istanbul, or Polis—quite simply the “City,” as the Greeks used to call it—is a challenge. You can’t make sense of this metropolis by just referring to the geographical divide between Orient and Occident. This image quickly becomes blurred and gives way to a kaleidoscope of overwhelming images and impressions.

Byzantion, Konstantiniyye, İstanbul ya da Yunanların tabiriyle şehir anlamına gelen Polis, bir meydan okumadır aslında. Sadece coğrafi yapısı itibariyle şark ve garbı içinde barındırmasıyla bu metropolün yanına kimse yanaşamaz. Oluşan bu resim ise çok çabuk bulanıklaşır ve yerini bir çicek dürbününden görünürcesine gark eden imge ve izlenimlere bırakır.

Whether you are swept off your feet by the Ottoman palaces and monumental mosques, or whether you throw in the towel in the face of Istanbul’s hectic hustle and bustle: this city will not leave you indifferent. What ultimately made me warm to it were the people with their vastly different attitudes and lifestyles, and not least with their hospitality.

İster Osmanlı dönemi abidevi saray ve camiilerin etkisinde kal ya da İstanbul’un sınırını aşan ticari hareketliliği önünde teslim ol. Ne olursa olsun bu şehrin önünde kayıtsız kalmak mümkün değildir. Nihayetinde beni kendisine çeken sadece insanların misafirperverlikleri değil, o insanların farklı farklı yaşam algıları ve hayat tasarıları olmuştur.

As a street photographer, I’ve learned that people here don’t perceive it as a threat when someone takes a photo of them, but rather are unperturbed by it or regard it as what it actually should be: an appreciation of the individual being photographed. Istanbul is not a classic beauty. This city has many scars. They are a safeguard against vanity. And that makes it easier to fall in love.

Bir sokak fotoğrafçısı olarak anladım ki insanlar burada, fotoğraflarının çekilmesini bir tehtit olarak değil, tersine gayet olağan biçimde dikkate alarak belki de olması gerektiği gibi, yani fotoğrafı çekilen insana değer verildiği hissiyle karşılamaktadırlar. İstanbul’un birçok yara izi ve kökleşik bir güzelliği vardır. İşte bu izler onu kibirden sakınır ve bu, (ona) aşık olmayı çok kolay kılar.
