The extensive menu is as colourful and bright as the atmosphere here! The all-day breakfast and lunch favourites, from killer breakfasts to juices and coffee, are served in style in this Kiwi-styled cafe combined with Brazilian flare. Definitely try the ‘veggie brekkie’, the pancakes, acai bowl, and all of the cakes! This is how every morning should start. It’s always busy and it’s still worth signing on to the waiting list. There are now two locations in De Pijp and in East.

In the heart of Amsterdam’s busy shopping district, tucked away in a quiet laneway, Gartine is a hidden gem of a cosy brunch place. It’s famous for its booked-out high teas and has a special place in our hearts. The food is simply honest, organic and authentic. Try the scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, and pancakes, all of which are amazing and leave room for some of the best cakes you will ever eat! Everything is home-made and grown in their garden. Make sure to book in advance! Reservation is a must.
Priding themselves on the culinary experience, here you’ll find the fashionable intersection of coffee excellence, healthy eco-curated breakfasts and a quirky, cool Scandinavian atmosphere. Sit at the bar and study how to make the perfect poached egg served on rye, or treat yourself to a delicious coffee, traditional cinnamon bun, carrot cake, porridge or compote. These guys know their coffee and food.
New to the food game but a cult favourite in the coffee game! This uber-cool and photogenically beautiful space is a cosy creative hideaway on the side-street of the Haarlemmerstraat. The menu by food artist chef Nana is just as perfect as the level of detail that goes into their coffee and tea experience. Toki is one of our favourite coffee and matcha-latte stops!

The menu is full of indulgent, delicious and inventive brunch dishes like ‘halloumi French toast’ and ‘kimchi waffles’.
DIGNITA
One of the best places to kick-start your day! The juices are cold pressed, raw, organic vegan, and delicious. There are various locations across the city. Whether you’re detoxing or just in the mood for a superfood smoothie, latte, overnight oats, or banoffee parfait, they have a ton of healthy treats, and don’t miss picking up their famously indulgent smoothie ‘The Sh*t’, it’s bananas! There is food around every corner, from authentic local gems to rich coffee, sweets & snacks, and stylish seafood restaurants by the shore. With a rich history and sense of style, there’s only one place. Beirut. The food’s delicious, the people are awesome. Go have a great time!

If you like to go for a healthy and delicious option, La Paloma (see p. 144) is always a good idea. In this place, authentic home-made food is prepared with love, care and the very best ingredients the island has to offer.

BAR COSTA
09:30
Start your day with a swim at Beniras and enjoy the calm any time of the year. Breakfast at Bar Es Canto or Bar Costa (see p. 138) in Santa Gertrudis. Es Canto offers a bigger menu and serves the best bocadillo con queso fundido (grilled-cheese sandwich). Bar Costa has a unique atmosphere and great music, and the food is also great, of course.

14:00
La Escolera at Es Cavallet has a beautiful view of the beach and ocean, and offers a nice selection of typical foods, but it is a little pricier. If you’re on a budget and have the luxury of having a grill or kitchen at your disposal, get the marinated boneless chicken thighs from Can Caus near Sta. Gertrudis; the local chicken is spectacular!
14:00
Our all-time favourite is Es Torrent (see p. 140). They simply have the best food! Its quality is immaculate and the staff is always friendly and helpful. When you’re tired of eating, you can chill on a comfy sunbed. We often stay till the very last guests have left the beach. It’s like this beautiful cove is all ours for that moment! (Until you spot Naomi Campbell being picked up from her boat to have a private dinner …)
17:00
Have some tapas and a beer at Bar Anita (see p. 138) in San Carlos. The old hippie hangout also makes one of the best hierbas Ibicencas liquor on the island. If you feel more like having something sweet, try the ice cream at Torres Talón, right next to Pacha nightclub in the harbour.
16:00
When you’re getting used to the real Spanish vibe and rhythm, you only have lunch in the afternoon. A perfect spot to get a sense of the local vibes is Bar Anita (see p. 138) in San Carlos. It used to be the local meeting point in the 60s and 70s for resident artists, writers, musicians … You cannot go past the tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette) on your first visit, washed down with a glass of the famous home-made hierbas. Yummy!
20:00
Can Pau is one of the older restaurants on the island.
The cosy finca atmosphere and a nice garden make it an all-year go-to place. The cuisine is Catalan, very simple, but full of flavours. The best time to go is in early spring, when they serve the seasonal and very local dish of calçots, a kind of spring onion burnt over the fire and served with a complex dip.
Spanish people wake up late; they never have breakfast before 09.30. :-D From croissants to pancakes, to poached eggs and avocado, to a yummy home-made granola with Greek yogurt (my favourite) … they have it all at Cappuccino Marina (see p. 136)! It’s all fresh and made with love. In addition, whilst sipping on your cappuccino, you can gaze into a beautiful view of Dalt Vila, or watch the boats roll in and then watch ‘em roll out again … How else would you want to start your day? Go there; it’s delicious!

Bring your own cava and tapas and have your apéro whilst enjoying the great natural beauty Ibiza has to offer. Our favourite spot is Atlantis, a magical place opposite the rocky islet of Es Vedrà that is surrounded by stunning scenery. PS Bring enough for everyone; it’s a long, steep hike to get there but totally worth it!

After having dinner, it’s time for some good music, nice convos, and last but not least, Japanese whisky. So, where do you find a nice, good spot, in the Disneyland-type landscape of Shibuya? JBS Bar. Especially if you consider yourself a music aficionado, you have to go hear (full pun intended, yes).
23:00
09:00
After getting up in the morning, I make a quick pit stop at the local combini market for a small onigiri and a warm (!) bottled green tea on the go. Then I’ll find my way to the local subway station. Time for breakfast. One of my favourites is Breakfast Club in Naka Meguro. At this American diner-style spot, I’ll go for the full English, my first coffee fix, and a scone on the side (yes, you read that right).
11:00
It’s always a slight bummer when JBS closes around 23:00! However, I’m in Japan, and life is good. Having said this, I have to finish my day with ramen. What place serves good ramen at midnight? Ichiran Ramen (see p. 278)! This place is crazy (Japanese crazy, that is). You’ll get seated at a booth with, in front of you, one of those drop-down shutters. Once you’ve installed and mentally prepared yourself to kill a bowl of ramen, you’ll be handed a form to fill in to indicate how firm you like your noodles. Then, after a short wait, the shutter comes up, only revealing the mid-torso of your server (again, what is up with these people?), and they’ll hand you your ramen. Yes, I know, this is super-weird, but trust me, this ramen is all worth the weirdness. The place looks like a dive, but this one is legit!
After taking the Tokyu-Toyoko Line, I arrive at Shibuya station. This is definitely one of those places which makes one realise that Tokyo is one of the biggest cities in the world. In Harajuku, I’ll go for lunch near Cat Street. There are two options here. My first being an escape from all the hecticness with a soothing soba noodle over at Tamawarai Soba. Its stark, clean, wabi-sabi interior is a great place to get familiar with the buckwheat noodle. However, sometimes you want a quick bite instead of a long lunch. So, for my second option, I’ll go for a quick bite at Harajuku Gyōza Rō, one of the go-to places for the heartiest, most satisfying snacks the Japanese have: the almighty gyōza dumpling …

Walking around, the whole Tokyo experience can be somewhat overwhelming, so coffee is up next. I’ll head over to the back streets of Harajuku, where you find Koffee Mameya (see p. 264). Hands down one of the best spots to get good coffee in the city. Although by now I’m probably not feeling hungry any more, I do want to mention Maisen Tonkatsu, a famous traditional tonkatsu restaurant around the corner that is great for dinner but where they also have a small vendor outside selling tonkatsu sandwiches for on the go!
