doorstep because the neighbors have no idea what to do with it. The abandoned plant is first placed in quarantine on the first floor. Once the plant feels better, it can move up in the house. The most frequent pests are aphids. To avoid using pesticides, Nicky uses ladybugs, which she lets ‘reside’ on sick plants for some time. She also plants lavender, another pest prevention trick. And yet, some of her houseplants died because they had dried out. Nicky rents out her house when she travels. Unfortunately not all of her houseguests share her concern for her plants. The brown leaves of her Monstera deliciosa are the perfect proof of this. ‘I’m convinced that everything happens on the level of vibrations, which we translate as humans. When I’m at home, I sing. Plants love it and it also makes them grow faster. I suspect that my guests don’t sing as often as I do.’ Everyone however does sing the praises of her phenomenal view. The house looks out onto a large lake. In the summer you can swim in it, in winter it makes a perfect skating rink. And as if that wasn’t extraordinary enough, Nicky also has a wild garden, which consists of flowers and plants she found and cheap cuttings. ‘It’s funny, but we planted the garden just after the gardening season, when plants are quite cheap. It’s amazing how much they’ll give you and for how little’, Nicky says. Now the garden is in full bloom and she enjoys the fruit from the trees. But the cats, chickens, birds and her neighbors are equally happy to enjoy it.

Marc Morro Furniture designer | Barcelona

He became addicted to plants by surrounding himself with the abundant greenery of others. Furniture designer Marc Morro lives and works in a studio in an industrial warehouse in Poblenou, the patio of which is teeming with gigantic plants. Some plants even thrive so well here that they are bursting out of the terracotta planters and have pierced through the rafters of the shed. Marc’s approach to gardening is very laidback. He is not an expert by any means. He just happened to fall in love with plants. ‘My neighbor Patrick Thomas is a graphic artist and spends half of his time abroad. He asked me to take care of his plants in his absence. It was easy in the beginning when the automatic irrigation system still worked. But when it broke down, I had to water all the plants separately. That is how I became infatuated with greenery.’ Now watering the plants has become part of Marc’s routine. ‘I spend fifteen minutes every day tending to my plants. I compare it to meditation. I don’t do yoga, I garden’, he laughs. He also enjoys the lushness of plants and likes monitoring their progress. His penchant for nature is also reflected in his work for his furniture company AOO (Altrescoses Otrascosas Otherthings), for which he creates simple and functional products. Marc likes to work with wood. ‘Wood is a warm, natural material that is close to mankind’. When it comes to inviting friends to his studio, he has a different approach: ‘I place chairs and a table on the patio and turn it into a tropical hangout. It matches the outdoor lifestyle for which Barcelona is so famous’.
