SCHMUCK UND EXPERIMENT JEWELLERY AND EXPERIMENT

GISBERT STACH

Beginning with jewellery and its proverbial timelessness, Gisbert Stach experiments with processes of transformation, transience and revaluation: pieces of jewellery are worked into asphalt, dissolved in acid or used as targets in knife-throwing performances. Ground amber serves as a pigment to give brooches the deceptively real look of schnitzels. In his twenty-five years of working as a silver- and goldsmith, Gisbert Stach expanded the notion of jewellery to include other media such as photography, video and performance.

Gisbert Stach has started to demystify amber rigorously and bring it into the present. Amber – an amorphous, solid organic substance from the Palaeozoic – is up to 300 million years old. Since the Stone Age, people have been making jewellery from this fossil resin, which is mainly found in the Baltic countries and was already traded in the ancient world as far away as Egypt, Mycenae and Rome. It was named ‘Tears of the Sun’, ‘Tears of the Gods’ and ‘Gold of the North’. We are reminded of the fairy-tale Amber Room, which was built by the Baroque sculptor Andreas Schlüter for the Prussian king Frederick William I and which has been lost since 1945 – a matter for all myths, speculations and treasure hunters. Above all, amber sounds like grandmother’s jewellery. Conclusion: ancient, antiquated, dull and even bourgeois. Gisbert Stach has a different opinion on this matter and shows us his perspective. His approach is strange as well as unique; his pieces of art should be seen in the context of various amber artwork competitions or biennials, which are regularly held in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. His method is blatant: the material is subjected to the most diverse metamorphoses in order to create a new form, which still resembles the original material but is slightly transformed through ‘art’. Like a chef from the Baroque era who created a pâté in the form of a woodcock: pâté dough on the outside, woodcock stuffing in the inside – nature and artwork combined in one. Gisbert Stach’s Viennese schnitzels are not edible. But just like a chef who slices and cuts the edible and transforms its aggregate state to a different one, Stach transforms the amber. In experimental series, pieces of jewellery are created based on the topic of food, especially fast food. One wonders, why fast food, of all things? Because these snacks might symbolise modern living? Because they stand for fast consumption and a contradictory statement with a deeper meaning? Because fast
