The tarot (/’tæro‫ݜ‬/; first known as trionfi and later as tarocchi, tarock, and others) is a pack of playing cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot.

From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists for divination as well as a map of mental and spiritual pathways.

Tarot (maskulinum oder neutrum, ausgesprochen [ta’ro:] ist ein Satz von 78 Spielkarten, der zu psychologischen Zwecken oder als Wahrsagekarten verwendet wird. Er wird eingeteilt in die großen Arkana, die 22 Trümpfe nummeriert von 0 bis 21, und die kleinen Arkana, die 56 Farbkarten: 10 Zahlen und 4 Bildkarten in jeweils 4 Farben (z. B. Stäbe, Münze, Kelche und Schwerter). Arcanum steht lat. für ‚Geheimnis‘, es leitet sich von arca ab, welches ‚Kiste‘ bedeutet (was in einer Kiste liegt, ist von außen unsichtbar, und damit geheim).

Le tarot est le nom de plusieurs jeux de cartes et de plusieurs ensembles de cartes à jouer, généralement au nombre de 78. Le premier jeu de tarot a été créé au XVe siècle en Europe.

Les différents jeux de tarot permettent de jouer à de multiples jeux tels le tarocchini (en) italien ou le tarot français. À partir de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, le tarot possède également un usage occulte et mystique.
